Types of Deadlocks for Doors
Deadlocks with hook bolts are used on aluminum sliding narrow stile storefront doors to enhance security and strength of the lock. The locks are locked on both sides to allow greater flexibility in access control.
To accurately determine the size of a new lock for your door, you must first determine the case's depth (or backset). This is the distance between the edge of the front door and the center of latch hole.
Tubular Latch
The tubular latch is by far the most popular door latch. It is easy to install and is popular with DIY enthusiasts as well as Joiners. It is available in various sizes shapes, shapes, and levels that can be used to match any style door handle.
A tubular latch features an elongated steel casing that includes a spring-loaded follower as well as an latch bolt (also known as a striker). When you open the door the latch retracts to allow you to lock and close it. When you close the doors the latch bolt swivels back and grabs the edge of frame to hold the door shut.
You'll have to decide the size of the door's latch before installing it. Many people believe that a metre from the floor is the ideal level to place a latch and door handle. But this isn't always the situation. The latch on a door knob must be placed in the middle of the rail. This is where most of the weight is transferred by the door when it's open and closed.
Once you've determined where the latch will be placed, mark the position of the hole on the door and on the strike plate with the help of a pencil. Drill pilot holes to secure the plate. After you've drilled the pilot holes, you can use a countersink to make sure that the back of your plate will sit flush with the door once it's been screwed.
If you're looking for a stronger-duty option than the standard tubular latch, you should consider opting for a double-sprung model. The door will close more easily when you use this latch because it has a separate spring to move the tongue. It also features a heavy-action spring on the spindle follower to ensure that levers or doorknobs return to their original horizontal position after each use.
After hook locks for vans have put the latch on the door, you'll need to install a strike plate in the frame. The strike plate is the piece that is placed in the space that is left by the latch when it's closed. Mark the area where you want to place the strike plate on the frame surrounding it. Then, use the knife to create a square space for the plate and remove it.
Cylindrical Latch
Cylindrical locks are often used for doors in the interior. They are used in homes and offices and have a wide range of applications. Cylindrical locks operate similarly to mortise lock systems but are much easier and faster to install. They do not require that an "mortise" or pocket be cut into the frame of the door as mortise locks do. The hole or bore is cut into the face of the door and they are inserted into that. They are available in a variety of sizes and are compatible with knobs and levers to open and close the door.
The primary distinction between mortise and cylinder locks is that only a specific key can open these types of locks. This is because they use pins that are different in height inside the cylinder, and springs to keep the pins in the right position. When the correct key is inserted into the cylinder, the pins align with one another, and the cylinder is able to rotate. This allows the latch bolt to retract, and the door can be opened.
If the wrong key is inserted in the wrong way, the pins don't align correctly, and they stop the piston from moving. This is the reason it's essential to use the correct key whenever you want to enter your home or business.
The cylinder is located inside the door's body and is connected to the operating trim with either a half-round or square extension. The cylinder also has small notch on its sides that are designed to be aligned with the key notches when the right key is placed. Once the cylinder is moved by the latch bolt, it will follow.
A strike plate is a metal plate that is used to catch the bolt that is projected to lock. The strike plate is generally made of heavy steel and it is secured to the door frame using screws. It also has an opening for the latch bolt to engage into.
Make use of the appropriate tools to remove the knob or handle of the old lock and the latch bolt. Once the old hardware is removed, mark the location of the new latch bolt and strike opening on the door and frame. Once the latch bolt and strike plate are in place, it's a good idea to test the operation of the lock by pushing against it with your fingers. If the latch bolt or strike plate are damaged or don't work properly it's the perfect time to consider replacing them.
Key-Locked Lock
This kind of lock is controlled with an outside key and a knob or lever on the inside. This kind of lock is suitable to secure doors that aren't at risk of being interfered with, such as in offices. This type of lock permits the outside lever to be either a locked or unlocked position and the inside knob/lever is always available for immediate exit. The key is needed only to pull the latchbolt back after the door has been closed.
The pins in a keylock are oriented and arranged along a line known as the shear line. These pins align with the shearline when the right key is placed into the lock. The plug can then be turned to release the latchbolt. If you've ever had a lock that was perfectly aligned, but the key was not able to open, one of the pins could be out of alignment with the shearline.
Face plates can also be found on some locks. They can be decorative or provide strength and security to the locking mechanism. It is common to see these plates on mortice locks as well as rim locks that have reversed spring bolts.
A strike plate is also available. It is typically attached to the door frame as well as the jamb. It is fitted with an opening through which the bolt is moved from the cylinder and into the lock. This is typically used in conjunction with deadbolts for additional security.
The cylinder is the last part, and it holds pins in a series that align the key's tip to prevent it from turning. A good quality cylinder is extremely difficult to break into if you don't have the right tools and knowledge of how to pick it. To lock a front door, turn the key in the same direction the door opens. If the door opens using the right hand, as in the case of, the key will need to be turned clockwise to lock the door. To unlock the door, the key needs to be turned counterclockwise. This is different from other locks which require you to turn the key in the opposite direction to the way the door opens, like for instance a Chubb lock.
Keyless Latch
A keyless latch allows you to lock and unlock your door without using the traditional key. These locks are operated using the smartphone app or access code, and some models even include a hidden camera for additional security. Be aware of your security requirements and compatibility with your existing hardware and doors when choosing keys-free locks. Read the instructions of the manufacturer and specifications before installing. Certain keyless locks might require special door modifications or preparations.
Several companies are developing smart locks that replace traditional keyed locks and offer additional security features. They are more robust and can be opened with fingerprint, code or facial recognition. Certain smart locks also come with security features that prevent tampering and can tell the moment a door was opened using a key that is not authorized or force.
One company, known as Latch, has developed an elegant, high-tech lock that works like other smart locks. Its primary customers are real estate firms who manage apartment buildings. The lock can be opened with a key, passcode or a mobile phone, and renters can allow dog walkers, cleaners, or out-of-town guests with temporary codes. The company claims that this will eliminate the necessity for tenants to lose their keys, and lowers maintenance costs as there is no need to change locks after the tenant leaves.
The Latch lock isn't available to the general public yet however, it could find a place in condos or large apartments. It's being tested in a handful of places and the company plans to release additional units later in the year. The cost is about the same as a standard lock and the company offers an affordable price and low fees for software.
The Latch App can be used to determine which doors are displayed as shortcuts. You can alter this at any time. Start the app and then click the menu located in the upper left corner of the screen. Select 'Widgets' and select the doors that you wish to display as shortcuts. You can see the access history of your doors through the Latch App after you have set up them.
