S3I-201 These results show that the Cu x Fe y O z composite NPs are a highly efficient, low-toxicity and cheap antimicrobial material that has promising potential for applications in medical and food safety.Nowadays, wearable technology can enhance physical human life-log routines by shifting goals from merely counting steps to tackling significant healthcare challenges. Such wearable technology modules have presented opportunities to acquire important information about human activities in real-life environments. The purpose of this paper is to report on recent developments and to project future advances regarding wearable sensor systems for the sustainable monitoring and recording of human life-logs. On the basis of this survey, we propose a model that is designed to retrieve better information during physical activities in indoor and outdoor environments in order to improve the quality of life and to reduce risks. This model uses a fusion of both statistical and non-statistical features for the recognition of different activity patterns using wearable inertial sensors, i.e., triaxial accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers. These features include signal magnitude, positive/negative peaks and position direction to explore signal orientation changes, position differentiation, temporal variation and optimal changes among coordinates. These features are processed by a genetic algorithm for the selection and classification of inertial signals to learn and recognize abnormal human movement. Our model was experimentally evaluated on four benchmark datasets Intelligent Media Wearable Smart Home Activities (IM-WSHA), a self-annotated physical activities dataset, Wireless Sensor Data Mining (WISDM) with different sporting patterns from an IM-SB dataset and an SMotion dataset with different physical activities. Experimental results show that the proposed feature extraction strategy outperformed others, achieving an improved recognition accuracy of 81.92%, 95.37%, 90.17%, 94.58%, respectively, when IM-WSHA, WISDM, IM-SB and SMotion datasets were applied.The practice of eating insects is not a new phenomenon; however, the interest for their consumption has increased in recent years due to their recognized nutritional value (high content of micro- and macronutrient), potential health benefits (presence of bioactive substances), and low-environmental impact (use of less resources and reduced pollution levels). Currently, research on insects has focused on the promotion of various processing technologies for their use as either ingredients (in a non-recognizable form) to the development of innovative products, or as sources of novel bioactive compounds. In this context, evidence has suggested that alternative technologies, particularly fermentation, could be used the obtain diverse insect-based ingredients/products with unique properties. Therefore, the purpose of this narrative review was to provide an overview of the available literature on fermentation applied to obtain new insect-based products, to summarize the patents and patent-applications to protect fermented edible insect products and processes, as well as to enlist examples of current available products in the market.This research aimed to evaluate the pretreatment of soybean with the carbohydrase multi-enzyme complex "Viscozyme L", during the extraction process; in order to improve the recovery of proteins and isoflavones in soybase, and reduce the loss of these compounds through the okara residue. Three concentrations of enzyme were studied at 50 °C, along with an experiment carried out without enzyme addition (control experiment). The results were also evaluated in relation to standard soybase processing. In comparison to the standard and control processes, the enzymatic pretreatment reduced up to 85% the total amount of okara residue. Due to the action of the multi-enzyme complex, protein and total isoflavone recovery increased from 42% to 83% and from 59% to 93%, respectively. The application of Viscozyme L also favored the conversion of conjugated forms of isoflavone to aglycone in the soybase, representing up to 50% of the total isoflavones. The enzymatic pretreatment of soybean with carbohydrase improved the nutritional quality of the soybase, while at the same time reducing residue generation; showing that the proposed food process can be considered environmentally friendly method.The aims of this study were to quantify and optimize the extraction of total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoids (TF) and antioxidant activity (AA) of aqueous pu-erh (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) extracts, as well as to compare the optimized pu-erh tea extract (OPT) with toasted mate (Ilex paraguariensis), black and green (Camellia sinensis) teas. The optimization process increased the TPC and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The results showed that the green tea extract presented the highest values for TPC and antioxidant capacity. The pasteurized OPT showed lower TPC and TF, and higher FRAP, DPPH and Cu2+ chelating ability compared to the non-pasteurized OPT. The lyophilized OPT showed inhibition of lipid peroxidation in Wistar rat brain homogenate and displayed antibiofilm activity against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 25212 and 19433, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Additionally, lyophilized OPT presented cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects against tumor cell lines (Caco-2, A549 and HepG2), inhibited the production of reactive oxygen species in A549 and IMR90 cells, and presented antihemolytic activity in human erythrocytes. The lyophilized OPT inhibited α-glucosidase (IC50 = 47.0 µg/mL) and α-amylase at 30.0 mg/mL. The main compounds detected in OPT were gallic acid, caffeine and theobromine.
This study sought to retrospectively evaluate the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcomes of u-HA/PLLA pin (u-HA/PLLA hydroxyapatite/poly-L-lactic acid) pin fixation of unstable osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) lesions of the knee.
Seven adolescent patients (four females and three males) with arthroscopically unstable OCD lesions of the knee were included. The mean age at diagnosis was 13.1 years. Clinical results were evaluated preoperatively and during follow-up using the Ogilvie-Harris score (0 - 15 points). MRI scans were performed preoperatively and during follow-up, with results evaluated using the Dipaola classification (grades 1 - 4). Mean follow-up time was 29 months.
The median Ogilvie-Harris score improved from 13 points (range 10 - 14 points) to 15 points (range 13 - 15 points). Separately, the median Dipaola score improved from 3 points (range 2 - 4 points) to 1 point (range 1 - 4 points). No complications such as infection, synovitis, or intra-articular adhesion were observed.
