The objective of this study was to determine the renal clearance of flunixin and meloxicam in pigs and compare plasma and urine concentrations and tissue residues. Urine clearance is important for livestock show animals where urine is routinely tested for these drugs. Fourteen Yorkshire/Landrace cross pigs were housed in individual metabolism cages to facilitate urine collection. This is a unique feature of this study compared to other reports. Animals received either 2.2mg/kg flunixin or 0.4mg/kg meloxicam via intramuscular injection and samples analyzed by mass spectrometry. Pigs were euthanized when drugs were no longer detected in urine and liver and kidneys were collected to quantify residues.
Drug levels in urine reached peak concentrations between 4 and 8h post-dose for both flunixin and meloxicam. Flunixin urine concentrations were higher than maximum levels in plasma. Urine concentrations for flunixin and meloxicam were last detected above the limit of quantification at 120h and 48h, respectivelyivestock show authorities involved in testing for these substances.
These data suggest that pigs given a single intramuscular dose of meloxicam at 0.4 mg/kg or flunixin at 2.2 mg/kg are likely to have detectable levels of the parent drug in urine up to 2 days and 5 days, respectively, after the first dose, but unlikely to have tissue residues above the US FDA tolerance or EU MRL following negative urine testing. This information will assist veterinarians in the therapeutic use of these drugs prior to livestock shows and also inform livestock show authorities involved in testing for these substances.
Lead is a toxic metal that affects almost every organ in the body. Children are more susceptible to lead toxicity because they ingest non-food items (pica), have oral exploratory habits, absorb more substantial amounts of ingested lead compared to adults, and have a developing central nervous system. This study describes venous blood lead concentrations (BLC) in young children living in Birjand, Iran.
A cross-sectional study was performed in 2016 on children 1-7 years of age who were referred to healthcare centers in Birjand City. Demographic information was obtained, and their BLC was tested using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).
Four hundred children were tested. Their mean age was 52.37 ± 23.77 months; their mean BLC was 2.49 ± 2.64 μg/dL (median 1.85 μg/dL). Thirty-two (8%) children had a BLC > 5 μg/dL. A logistic regression model revealed that per one unit of increase in age, the chance of an elevated BLC decreased by 3% (OR (95%CI) 0.97 (0.96-0.99), p < 0.01). The risks of an elevated BLC was 61% lower in girls compared to boys (OR (95%CI) 0.39 (0.17-0.92), p = 0.03). #link# Further, per one rate of increase in the BMI, the chance of an elevated BLC was higher (OR (95%CI) 1.13 (1.02-1.24), p = 0.01). Children whose fathers were laborers had higher BLC than those with employee fathers (p= 0.01).

Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects one in every three women globally. Previous studies have revealed that women's experiences of different forms of IPV are significantly associated with a higher rate of unintended pregnancy, reduced uptake of contraception, and reduced ability to make decisions regarding their fertility. The aim of this study was to investigate whether previously observed relationships between IPV and unintended pregnancy in Ethiopia are mediated by contraceptive use and women's autonomy.
This study was performed using nationally representative data from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS). A subsample of married women of reproductive age reporting a pregnancy within the 5years preceding 2016 and who participated in the domestic violence sub-study of the survey were included in analyses. Logistic regression models, together with the product of coefficients method, were used to estimate direct and mediated effects.
Twenty six percent of participants reported an ugnificant role in mediating the effect of IPV on unintended pregnancy in Ethiopia. Maternal health service interventions in Ethiopia could incorporate measures to improve women's decision-making power to reduce the negative reproductive health effects of IPV.

Despite recent improvements in child survival, neonatal mortality continues to decline at a slower rate and now represents 47% of under-five deaths globally. The World Health Organization developed core indicators to better monitor the quality of maternal and newborn health services. One such indicator for newborn health is "the proportion of newborns who received all four elements of essential care". The four elements are immediate and thorough drying, skin to skin contact, delayed cord clamping, and early initiation of breastfeeding. Although there is existing selleck inhibitor demonstrating an association with decreased neonatal mortality for each element individually, the cumulative impact has not yet been examined.
This analysis uses data from a randomized trial to examine the impact of sunflower versus mustard seed oil massage on neonatal mortality and morbidity in the Sarlahi district in Southern Nepal from 2010 to 2017. The proportion of newborn infants receiving an intervention was the exposure and neonatal mortality was the outcome in this analysis.
