The 5-year survival rates were 96.0% and 98.9% in the 6-mm and 11-mm group, respectively. The mean marginal bone level changes 5years post-loading were 0.01±0.45mm (bone gain) in the 6-mm group and -0.12±0.93mm (bone loss) in the 11-mm group (p=.7670). Clinical parameters, including plaque, bleeding on probing and pocket probing depth were not significantly different between the groups, and also technical complications were low.
The clinical and radiographic outcomes of 6-mm short and 11-mm standard-length implants were not different during a 5-year evaluation period.

Malaria parasites infect erythrocytes in a coordinated manner, with cycle durations in multiples of 24 hours, which reflects a behavior consistent with the host's circadian cycle. Interference in cycle coordination can help the immune system to naturally fight infection. Consequently, there is a search for new drugs that interfere with the cycle duration for combined treatment with conventional antimalarials. Melatonin appears to be a key host hormone responsible for regulating circadian behavior in the parasite cycle. In addition to host factors, there are still unknown factors intrinsic to the parasite that control the cycle duration. In this review, we present a series of reports of indole compounds and melatonin derivatives with antimalarial activity that were tested on several species of Plasmodium to evaluate the cytotoxicity to parasites and human cells, in addition to the ability to interfere with the development of the erythrocytic cycle. Most of the reported compounds had an IC50 value in the low micromolar range, without any toxicity to human cells. Triptosil, an indole derivative of melatonin, was able to inhibit the effect of melatonin in vitro without causing changes to the parasitemia. The wide variety of tested compounds indicates that it is possible to develop a compound capable of safely eliminating parasites from the host and interfering with the life cycle, which is promising for the development of new combined therapies against malaria. The Westlawn Partnership for a Healthier Environment (WPHE) is a longstanding group of community stakeholders that was formed over a decade ago to identify, prioritize, and address environmental health (EH) concerns in a low-income, predominantly African American, urban neighborhood, which faces a disproportionate burden of EH risks, particularly asthma. Launched by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Nursing, which established a nurse-managed health center within the community 30 years ago, WPHE utilized the Protocol of Assessing Community Excellence in Environment Health methodology to develop, implement, and sustain the partnership. WPHE implemented programs for Healthy Homes, Healthy Day Cares, and bicycling, and made system and infrastructure changes within the community to address the top identified EH concerns indoor and outdoor air pollution, mold exposure, access to safe and healthy food, and pesticide exposure. WPHE's efforts have resulted in significant local, state, and national policy impacts to promote environmental justice. This brief report shares how the partnership was formed, its priorities, major activities and accomplishments, and insights into sustaining a community-based EH partnership, including recommendations for the key role that public health nurses can play to promote environmental justice.Dendrobium liquor obtained by soaking Dendrobium in Chinese liquor is considered as a health drink in China. Here, we found the pretreatment of extract of Dendrobium nobile Lindl. liquor (DNLE) attenuated the oxidative damage to cells caused by H2 O2 , while the abilities of DNLE of eliminating extracellular free radicals and promoting the activities of intracellular antioxidant enzymes were observed. Quantitative proteomics identified 375 differentially expressed proteins caused by H2 O2 treatment in 293T cells. However, only 12 differentially expressed proteins were found in DNLE-pretreated cells which under the same oxidative damage. This suggested that the pretreatment of DNLE could suppress the disorder of protein expressions caused by oxidative stress which could induce cell death. selleck Besides, DNLE was helpful for avoiding the unfolded protein response (UPR) and cell cycle disorder caused by oxidative stress. Taken together, these results demonstrated that Dendrobium liquor could be a healthy herbal drink with antioxidant function. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Dendrobium is used as an edible herb and a tonic food in traditional Chinese medicine. Dendrobium liquor obtained by soaking Dendrobium with Chinese liquor is also regarded as a nourishing health drink. However, there is rare research data on biological activity of Dendrobium liquor. Our current results demonstrated that the extract of Dendrobium nobile Lindl. liquor (DNLE) possessed the ability of eliminating free radicals in/out the human cells. More importantly, DNLE could help cells to resist the interference on cell life activities caused by oxidative stress. Since many evidences suggested that oxidative stress is linked to human disease and aging, and chemical antioxidant has some side effects on health, Dendrobium liquor can serve as a natural health drink with antioxidant function. Furthermore, the active ingredients in DNLE also possess the potential to be developed as natural antioxidant additive in food and cosmetics.
Helicobacter pylori infection leads to regulatory T-cell (Treg) induction in infected mice, which contributes to H. pylori immune escape. However, the mechanisms responsible for H. pylori induction of Treg and immune tolerance remain unclear. We hypothesized DC-produced TGF-β may be responsible for Treg induction and immune tolerance.
To test this hypothesis, we generated TGF-β
mice (CD11c
DC-specific TGF-β deletion) and assessed the impact of DC-specific TGF-β deletion on DC function during Helicobacter infection in vitro and in vivo. To examine the T cell-independent DC function, we crossed TGF-β
mice onto Rag1KO background to generate TGF-β
xRag1KO mice.
When stimulated with H. pylori, TGF-β
BMDC/splenocyte cocultures showed increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines and decreased levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines compared to control, indicating a proinflammatory DC phenotype. Following 6months of H. felis infection, TGF-β
mice developed more severe gastritis and a trend toward more metaplasia compared to TGF-β
with increased levels of inflammatory Th1 cytokine mRNA and lower gastric H.
