PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS We investigated the effects of DPEML fermented by Microbacterium flavum YM18-098 and Lactobacillus plantarum B7 on the high glucose-induced apoptosis of MIN6 cells and explored its potential cell protective mechanisms. DPEML ameliorated the apoptosis of MIN6 cells cultured under high glucose conditions, thereby improving cell viability. DPEML upregulated the Bcl-2/Bax mRNA ratio to obstruct an intrinsic apoptotic pathway and concomitantly downregulated the expression of the apoptosis-linked proteins, AIF and Cyt-C, in high glucose-induced MIN6 cells. Furthermore, DPEML promoted the insulin secretion of MIN6 cells grown under chronically high-glucose conditions by upregulating Ins mRNA expression. We suggested that DPEML is a promising functional food for the development of therapeutics for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus. In the orange juice industry, pulp (ruptured juice sacs) is separated from the juice after extraction and pasteurized separately before blending back with juice or sold for other food applications. However, pulp is not always pasteurized immediately after extraction and the flow behavior is affected by endogenous pectinmethylesterase (PME). This is particularly important because of the high power required to pump orange pulp in industrial pasteurizers. This study characterized the effect of PME on the flow behavior of citrus pulp during storage at 4 °C using rotational rheometry and during pulp storage at 22 °C using capillary rheometry. PME activity was 0.011 ± 0.001 PEU for the pulp used in rotational rheometry and 0.030 ± 0.002 PEU for the pulp used in capillary rheometry. Rotational rheometry was used to assess the effect of PME on the Power Law parameters at shear rates ( γ ̇ ) below those that cause slip. There were no significant differences among storage time on the flow behavior index (n). However, the consistency coefficient (K) increased with storage time. Significant differences were found after 12-hr storage increasing from 120 ± 30 Pa·sn to 160 ± 15 Pa·sn (16.7%) after 24 hr. Capillary rheomtery was used to assess the effect of PME on the pressure drop in a flow system. Significant differences were found at or after 12-hr storage. The mean pressure drop increased by 34% after 24 hr, for a flow rate of 50 × 10-6 m3 /s (0.8 GPM) in an 8.9-m long (29.2 ft), 0.022-m (1-in) diameter pipe. PRACTICAL APPLICATION Design and optimization of processing equipment and industrial handling systems of orange pulp require detailed knowledge of its rheological (flow) properties. Citrus pulp is rich in pectinmethylesterase, an enzyme that causes thickening of the product when not inactivated during pasteurization. Understanding how fast PME affects the flow properties of orange pulp is important for citrus processors to decide how long pulp can be stored before pasteurizing it.The lack of knowledge and skills for transitioning to motherhood places first-time mothers at greater risk of depression and stress, may lower their perceived self-efficacy and satisfaction with the maternal role, and potentially affects the mother-infant bond. The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of a multimodal nursing intervention (AMACOMPRI), based on Mercer's Becoming a Mother Theory, in supporting the process of becoming a mother in first-time mothers of term infants. This study was a parallel-group, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial with a 4-month postpartum follow-up. The outcome measures were the process of becoming a mother, functional social support, mother-infant bond, and perceived maternal self-efficacy. Sixty-six first-time mothers completed the study 33 in the intervention group and 33 in the control group. The intervention was effective in supporting the process of becoming a mother, with a large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.50) and higher scores on the Becoming-a-Mother Scale in the intervention group compared with the control group (intergroup difference 13.04 points; 95% confidence interval 8.72-17.34). Participants in the intervention group demonstrated higher scores in functional social support, perceived maternal self-efficacy, and mother-infant bond. This study provides evidence for the efficacy of an innovative nursing intervention that supports the process of becoming a mother. Further testing of the intervention is required in different settings and first-time mothers of low and high risk newborns.
Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) are associated with altered regulation of physiological processes in the brain. Acetate, a metabolite of ethanol, has been implicated in several processes that are disrupted in AUDs including transcriptional regulation, metabolism, inflammation, and neurotransmission. find more To further understand the effects of acetate on brain function in AUDs, we investigated the effects of acetate on cerebral blood flow (CBF), systemic inflammatory cytokines, and behavior in AUD.

Sixteen participants with AUD were recruited from a nonmedical, clinically managed detoxification center. Each participant received acetate and placebo in a randomly assigned order of infusion and underwent 3T MR scanning using quantitative pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling. Participants and the study team were blinded to the infusion. CBF values (ml/100g/min) extracted from thalamus were compared between placebo and acetate using a mixed effect linear regression model accounting for infusion order. Voxel-wise CBF inence from alcohol, the brain's response to acetate differs by brain region and this response may be associated with the severity of alcohol dependence.Five developmental trajectories of partnering in the ages 18-35 were identified by Vergunst et al. (2020). In my discussion of these trajectories, I included findings of three studies using the same dataset as Vergunst et al. First I showed that formation and maintenance of intimate relationships have different childhood precursors. It also became clear that family adversity and high inattention in childhood are systematic predictors of problems in investing in age-graded roles in adulthood in educational attainment, partnering, and becoming economically self-reliant. A limitation of the study Vergunst et al. is the absence of adolescence. Inclusion of data on adolescent development could have clarified why effects of family adversity and childhood traits are very small and provided evidence for the role of parent-adolescent relationships. Finally, the study by Vergunst et al. demonstrates intergenerational transmission of problems across various developmental domains. This intergenerational continuity of vulnerabilities suggests developmental selection.
