Purpose To analyze changes in the levels of angiogenic and inflammatory cytokines following the administration of intravitreal conbercept (IVC) or intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) in patients with macular edema (ME) due to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Methods This retrospective study was conducted between June 2015 and January 2016 in The First Hospital of China Medical University. We administered 3 consecutive monthly doses of IVC (23 eyes) or IVR (19 eyes) in 42 eyes with CRVO-ME. At each injection, we collected aqueous humor samples and used multiplex bead assays to measure 7 angiogenic and inflammatory cytokines [vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), placental growth factor (PlGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-AA, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, and interleukins (ILs)-6, 8, and 12]. Results Visual acuity and ME improved significantly in both groups during the treatment period. Compared with the baseline, all the cytokine concentrations in the aqueous humor samples decreased significantly at 1 and 2 months after the initial dose of IVC or IVR. The improvement of visual acuity and ME and the changes of aqueous humor cytokine levels were similar in both groups. Concentrations of VEGF, PlGF, MCP-1, PDGF-AA, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-12 levels did not show significant intergroup differences after 1 month (P = 0.369, 0.312, 0.185, 0.353, 0.135, 0.487, and 0.337, respectively) and 2 months (P = 0.305, 0.376, 0.230, 0.519, 0.114, 0.960, and 0.830, respectively) of follow-up. Conclusion IVC and IVR induced comparable improvements in clinical parameters, along with equivalent reductions in the concentrations of angiogenic and inflammatory cytokines in the aqueous humor.Heat shock protein expression can be induced by heat shock making it possible to artificially modulate their levels noninvasively in vivo in a spatially and temporally controlled manner. Here, we report the use of the major heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) as an inducible target by using the small molecule deoxyspergualin (DSG) conjugated to the near-infrared fluorophore (Cy5.5). We demonstrate that heat induction in the form of localized hyperthermia of normal tissue in living mice results in sufficient HSP70 overexpression for detection with DSG-Cy5.5 conjugate. This effect is dependent on total energy delivered and reaches maximum fluorescence signal in 6 to 8 hours post heat induction and declines over a period of up to 24 hours. These results suggest that DSG-Cy5.5 agent accumulates in tissue with elevated HSP70 by heat. Background Since legalization of medical assistance in dying (MAiD) in Canada on June 17, 2016, there has been limited information regarding how outcomes of those requesting MAiD relates to comorbidity, social circumstances, geographic location, and access to care. This study aims to identify characteristics associated with the completion of MAiD, once requested, with specialist palliative care (SPC) as the primary exposure of interest. Methods This retrospective cohort study consists of all patients in Nova Scotia who requested MAiD between June 17, 2016 and December 31, 2018 and were deceased at the time of analysis (n = 383). Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were performed. Results A smaller proportion of patients who completed MAiD were seen in consultation by SPC (69.4% vs. 81.1%, p = 0.01). SPC was associated with decreased odds of completing MAiD (odds ratio [OR] 0.59, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.36-0.96, p = 0.04), as was cohabitation (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.41-0.99, p = 0.05) and Charlson comorbidity index >6 (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.41-0.99, p = 0.05). Interpretation SPC consultation was associated with significantly reduced likelihood of MAiD completion. Puromycin aminonucleoside clinical trial Contributing factors may include differences in access to SPC services, those completing MAiD being more likely to decline a consultation with SPC, or the impact of SPC upon patient preferences and access to MAiD. While the interface between SPC and MAiD is in its early stages, our findings are supportive of a more integrated approach to coordination of SPC and MAiD services. Background Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most faculty in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) began working from home, including many who were simultaneously caring for children. The objective was to assess associations of gender and parental status with self-reported academic productivity before (i.e., mid-January to mid-March 2020) and during the pandemic (i.e., mid-March to mid-May 2020). Materials and Methods STEMM faculty in the United States (N = 284, 67.6% women, 57.0% with children younger than the age of 18 years living at home) completed a survey about the number of hours worked and the frequency of academic productivity activities. Results There was no significant difference in the hours worked per week by gender (men, M [standard deviation, SD] = 45.8 [16.7], women = 43.1 [16.3]). Faculty with 0-5-year-old children reported significantly fewer work hours (33.7 [13.9]) compared to all other groups (No children = 49.2 [14.9], 6-11 years old = 48.3 [13.9], and 12-17 years old = 49.5 [13.9], p  less then  0.0001). Women's self-reported first/corresponding author's and coauthor's article submissions decreased significantly between the two time periods; men's productivity metrics did not change. Faculty with 0-5-year-old children completed significantly fewer peer review assignments, attended fewer funding panel meetings, and submitted fewer first authors' articles during the pandemic compared to the previous period. Those with children aged 6 years or older at home or without children at home reported significant increases or stable productivity. Conclusions Overall, significant disparities were observed in academic productivity by gender and child age during the pandemic and if confirmed by further research, should be considered by academic institutions and funding agencies when making decisions regarding funding and hiring as well as promotion and tenure.Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) at the University of New Mexico is a telementoring program that uses videoconferencing technology to connect health care providers in underserved communities with subject matter experts. In March 2020, Project ECHO created 10 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) telementoring programs to meet the public health needs of clinicians and teachers living in underserved rural and urban regions of New Mexico. The newly created COVID-19 programs include 7 weekly sessions (Community Health Worker [in English and Spanish], Critical Care, Education, First-Responder Resiliency, Infectious Disease Office Hours, and Multi-specialty) and 3 one-day special sessions. We calculated the total number of attendees, along with the range and standard deviation, per session by program. Certain programs (Critical Care, Infectious Disease Office Hours, Multi-specialty) recorded the profession of attendees when available. The Project ECHO research team collected COVID-19 infection data by county from March 11 through May 31, 2020.
