Proprietary data formats are converted into open hierarchical data format (HDF5) files, with both datasets and subsequent workflows automatically stored into a single location, thus allowing easy management of multiple data types. At present, Hystorian provides a basic scanning probe microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis toolkit, and is readily extensible to suit user needs. It is also able to wrap over any existing processing functions, making it easy to append in an extant workflow.In the coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) techniques, a key point is to reconstruct the complex-valued object from the far-field intensity measurements, i.e., solving the phase retrieval problem. However, due to this ill-posed problem, traditional phase retrieval algorithms often encounter some problems associated with the iteration convergence. In this work, complementary phase modulations (CPM) are introduced to generate different far-field intensity measurements. The namely CPM-based method aims to find out the global optimal solution by imposing multi-dimensional constraints, including the diverse intensity images at the Fourier plane and the CPM at the object plane. It is proved by the numerical simulations and the optical experiments that the convergence speed and the recovery accuracy could be greatly improved. Furthermore, the shifting complementary phase modulations (SCPM)-based method is proposed by introducing more CPMs. The reconstruction performance is further improved even when the phase range is larger, and the support constraints are not required. In addition, the SCPM-based method is more robust to the Poisson noise. With the outstanding reconstruction performance, the CPM-based methods may be helpful to phase imaging in the application of visible-light microscopy and X-ray imaging.Appropriate drug treatment for smoking asthmatics is uncertain because most smokers with asthma are less sensitive to treatment with glucocorticoids compared with non-smokers with asthma. We hypothesized that roflumilast (Rof), a selective phosphodiesterases-4 inhibitor regarded as an add-on therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, might be more effective than glucocorticoids for improving asthma in smokers. To investigate this hypothesis, we compared the therapeutic effects of dexamethasone (Dex) and Rof in a mouse model of ovalbumin-induced asthma with or without concurrent cigarette smoke (CS) exposure for 2 weeks. We found that recurrent asthma attacks increased lung tissue resistance. CS exposure in asthmatic mice decreased the central airway resistance, increased lung compliance, and attenuated airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR). CS exposure in asthmatic mice also increased the number of neutrophils and macrophages in the bronchoalveolar fluid. Treatment with Dex in asthmatic mice without CS exnd inflammation in asthmatic mice with CS exposure. This study did not support our initial hypothesis that Rof might be more effective than glucocorticoids for improving asthma in smokers. However, glucocorticoids may have a detrimental effect on smoking asthmatics.
Cigarette smoke (CS) is the main risk factor for the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pulmonary emphysema. The use of antioxidants has emerged as a potential therapeutic strategy to treat airway inflammation and lung diseases. In the current study, we investigated the potential therapeutic impact of diallyl disulfide (Dads) treatment in a murine model of CS-induced emphysema.

C57BL/6 mice were exposed to CS for 60 consecutive days and treated with vehicle or Dads (30, 60 or 90mg/kg) by oral gavage for the last 30 days, three times/week. All mice were euthanized 24h after day 60; bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed and lungs were processed for further experimentation. It has an endogenous origin and is associated with gastrointestinal and haematological malignancies. We present the case of a 62-year-old male who presented this infection as the first manifestation of a colon adenocarcinoma.The aim of this laboratory-based study is to evaluate performance of the Light-Induced Fluorescence Evaluator (SoproLIFE) for early detection of coronal caries and to validate the findings using the International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS). A total of 56 freshly extracted teeth with coronal carious lesions were included. 74 regions of interest were identified. Visual assessments with International Caries Detection and Assessment Systems (ICDAS), radiographic information and SoproLIFE images were used to classify each region of interest according to the ICCMS as a reference standard. SoproLIFE specificity and sensitivity were calculated at the sound-enamel and dentine lesion levels. Inter and intra reproducibility of ICDAS were analysed and showed a moderate agreement (0.52) and (0.58) respectively. At the sound-initial caries level, the sensitivity and specificity for the SoproLIFE were 90.0%, 95.8% respectively, whilst for the dentine caries level, sensitivity was 100% with specificity of 53.
