This approach provides control over photodamage at a level at least comparable with that achieved using cryogenic techniques and at the same time eliminates problems associated with interference due to Bragg peaks. The study of in situ microscale biogeochemical processes represents a major challenge in the environmental sciences. The combination of microfluidic devices with X-ray fluorescence microprobe spectroscopy may address this need, but typical materials used in these devices attenuate the X-rays needed to analyze key elements of interest, such as Fe or As. In this work, a method is presented for fabricating an etched silicon microfluidic device that is sealed with a 30 µm thin glass window that is sufficiently transparent for X-ray fluorescence microprobe spectroscopy. The capabilities of these devices for X-ray microprobe spectroscopy are demonstrated using an Fe (hydr)oxide solid that is loaded with As and then infused with sulfide, on beamline 4-BM at NSLS-II, resulting in time-variant Fe precipitation reactions and As sorption. Key results include in situ X-ray fluorescence time-series maps of Fe, As and a Br flow tracer, as well as spot XANES at both the Fe K edge and As K edge. Additionally, multiple energy mapping is used to examine the spatial speciation of As over time. The results of this work clearly demonstrate the capabilities of this novel microfluidic system that can be analyzed using X-ray fluorescence microprobe spectroscopy and can be made to study a wide range of complex microscale geochemical systems.A well designed compact furnace has been designed for in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). It enables various heat ramps from 300 K to 1473 K. The furnace consists of heaters, a quartz tube, a circulated refrigerator and a power controller. It can generate ohmic heating via an induction process with tantalum filaments. The maximum heating rate exceeds 20 K min-1. A quartz tube with gas feedthroughs allows the mixing of gases and adjustment of the flow rate. The use of this compact furnace allows in situ XAS investigations to be carried out in transmission or fluorescence modes under controlled temperature and atmosphere. Moreover, the furnace is compact, light and well compatible to XAS. The furnace was used to study cationic oxidation states in Pr6O11 and NiO compounds under elevated temperature and reduced atmosphere using the in situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) technique at beamline 5.2 SUT-NANOTEC-SLRI of the Synchrotron Light Research Institute, Thailand. At room temperature, Pr6O11 contains a mixture of Pr3+ and Pr4+ cations, resulting in an average oxidation state of +3.67. In situ XANES spectra of Pr (L3-edge) show that the oxidation state of Pr4+ cations was totally reduced to +3.00 at 1273 K under H2 atmosphere. Considering NiO, Ni2+ species were present under ambient conditions. At 573 K, the reduction process of Ni2+ occurred. The Ni0/Ni2+ ratio increased linearly with respect to the heating temperature. Finally, the reduction process of Ni2+ was completely finished at 770 K.X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectra were recorded to investigate the electronic structure and local crystal structure of ZnO and ZnOB powders produced via hydrothermal synthesis. OTX015 order ZnO and ZnOB grow as micrometre-scale rods with hexagonal shape, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy micrographs. The number of broken ZnOB rods increases with increasing B concentration, as observed in the images, due to B atoms locating in between the Zn and O atoms which weakens and/or breaks the Zn-O bonds. However, no disorder within the crystallographic structure of ZnO upon B doping is observed from X-ray diffraction results, which were supported by EXAFS results. To determine the atomic locations of boron atoms in the crystal structure and their influence on the zinc atoms, EXAFS data were fitted with calculated spectra using the crystal structure parameters obtained from the crystallographic analysis of the samples. EXAFS data fitting and complementary k-weight analysis revealed the positions of the B atoms - their positions were determined to be in between the Zn and O atoms.Hybrid photon counting (HPC) detectors are widely used at both synchrotron facilities and in-house laboratories. The features of HPC detectors, such as no readout noise, high dynamic range, high frame rate, excellent point spread function, no blurring etc. along with fast data acquisition, provide a high-performance detector with a low detection limit and high sensitivity. Several HPC detector systems have been developed around the world. A number of them are commercially available and used in academia and industry. One of the important features of an HPC detector is a fast readout speed. Most HPC detectors can easily achieve over 1000 frames s-1, one or two orders of magnitude faster than conventional CCD detectors. Nevertheless, advanced scientific challenges require ever faster detectors in order to study dynamical phenomena in matter. The XSPA-500k detector can achieve 56 kframes s-1 continuously, without dead-time between frames. Using `burst mode', a special mode of the UFXC32k ASIC, the frame rate reaches 1 000 000 frames s-1. XSPA-500k was fully evaluated at the Metrology beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL (France) and its readout speed was confirmed by tracking the synchrotron bunch time structure. The uniformity of response, modulation transfer function, linearity, energy resolution and other performance metrics were also verified either with fluorescence X-rays illuminating the full area of the detector or with the direct beam. The design and implementation of new beamlines featuring side-bounce (single-reflection) diamond monochromators at Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) are described. Undulator radiation is monochromated using an interchangeable set of diamond crystal plates reflecting radiation in the horizontal (synchrotron) plane, where each crystal plate is set to one of the low-index Bragg reflections (111, 220, 311 and 400) in either Bragg or Laue reflection geometries. At the nominal Bragg angle of 18° these reflections deliver monochromated X-rays with photon energies of 9.7, 15.9, 18.65 and 22.5 keV, respectively. An X-ray mirror downstream of the diamond monochromator is used for rejection of higher radiation harmonics and for initial focusing of the monochromated beam. The characteristics of the X-ray beam entering the experimental station were measured experimentally and compared with the results of simulations. A reasonable agreement is demonstrated. It is shown that the use of selected high-dislocation-density `mosaic' diamond single-crystal plates produced using the chemical vapor deposition method yields a few-fold enhancement in the flux density of the monochromated beam in comparison with that delivered by perfect crystals under the same conditions.
