However, in the case of side effects, therapeutic failure or the need for long-term use, anabolic agents may be considered. In high-risk patients, anabolic agents may be considered as an initial therapeutic option. The combination of antiresorptive and anabolic agents may be useful to increase BMD compared with monotherapy, but more information is warranted to determine the effects on fracture risk.
To explore the demographic and clinical features of severe catatonic patients, comparing responders and non-responders to ECT in order to detect possible predictors of non-response.
This naturalistic study included 59 catatonic inpatients with a diagnosis of mood disorder according to DSM-IV-TR criteria. All patients were treated with bilateral ECT and evaluated before and after ECT course. The response to ECT was defined as a Clinical Global Impression (Improvement subscale) rating 1 'very much improved' or 2 'much improved'. Clinical variables were compared between responders and non-responders; logistic regression was used to predict the probability of non-response, with regard to the symptoms presented by the patients.
The response rate was 83.1%. Non-responders (
= 10) to ECT showed neurological comorbidities, treatments with dopamine agonists and anticholinergic drugs, waxy flexibility, and echophenomena more frequently than respondents (
= 49). Echophenomena resulted a significant predictor ottom-up' variant of catatonia.Key pointsCatatonic symptoms are frequently associated with severe and psychotic mood disorders.Electroconvulsive therapy is effective in treating most forms of severe catatonia.Neurological comorbidity and the presence of 'echopraxia/echolalia' could represent predictors of non-response to ECT.miR-199a-5p is an important regulator of many biological processes. However, whether and how CYP enzymes are regulated by miR-199a-5p are unknown. Here, we aimed to investigate the potential role of mmu-miR-199a-5p in regulating CYP2 enzymes.Regulatory effects of mmu-miR-199a-5p on CYP expression were assessed in mouse AML-12 hepatocytes. The metabolic activity of CYP2B10 was probed using cyclophosphamide (CPA) as a specific substrate. The regulatory mechanism was investigated using combined luciferase reporter assays and chromatin immunoprecipitation.Of several important drug-metabolizing CYPs, mmu-miR-199a-5p significantly increased the mRNA levels of Cyp2a10, Cyp2c29, and Cyp2j5 in AML-12 cells with Cyp2a10 altered the most. Consistently, mmu-miR-199a-5p enhanced the expression of CYP2B10 protein and cellular metabolism of CPA. Based on database analysis, Cyp2b10 was not a direct target gene of mmu-miR-199a-5p. Thus, a mediator is necessary for the miRNA regulation of CYP2B10. We found that E4BP4 repressed Cyp2b10 transcription and expression through specific binding to a D-box element in the gene promoter. Moreover, mmu-miR-199a-5p inhibited the expression of E4bp4 at the posttranscriptional level by directly targeting the 59-65 nt segment in its 3'-UTR.In conclusion, mmu-miR-199a-5p positively regulates CYP2B10 expression through inhibiting its repressor E4BP4. Our findings may provide an increased understanding of the complex regulatory pathways for CYP2B10.This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of sexual myths during pregnancy among pregnant women in Turkey and Iran and to compare the similarities and differences between the countries. This is a comparative and descriptive study. The sample included 200 pregnant women from Turkey and Iran. The data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form and Sexual Myths During Pregnancy Form. It was determined that the women in Turkey agreed more with statements, such as 'the infant feels sexual intercourse', 'the infant becomes happy and healthy', 'sexual intercourse during pregnancy is safe'. As for pregnant women in Iran, it was determined that they were more hesitant to agree with statements, such as 'sexual intercourse is a sin' and 'sexual intercourse causes infections'. In both countries, education on sexuality during pregnancy is needed to eliminate information deficiencies.Impact StatementWhat is already known on this subject? Sexual myths during pregnancy are exaggerated beliefs with no scientific accuracy. These beliefs affect the attitudes and behaviours related to sexuality during pregnancy. What do the results of this study add? This study has revealed that sexual myths during pregnancy are common among pregnant women in Turkey and Iran, and there are similarities and differences between the countries in terms of myths. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Healthcare professionals should question pregnant women about sexuality during pregnancy, identify missing and incorrect information, and provide counselling.Although the evidence is inconclusive, epidemiological studies strongly suggest that increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) increases the risk of brain tumors, parotid gland tumors, and seminoma. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified mobile phone radiofrequency radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). Humans being are inadvertently being exposed to EMR as its prevalence increases, mainly through mobile phones. Radiation exposure is unavoidable in the current context, with mobile phones being an inevitable necessity. Prudent usage of medicinal plants with a long history of mention in traditional and folklore medicine and, more importantly, are safe, inexpensive, and easily acceptable for long-term human use would be an appealing and viable option for mitigating the deleterious effects of EMR. Plants with free radical scavenging, anti-oxidant and immunomodulatory properties are beneficial in maintaining salubrious health. Green tea polyphenols, Ginkgo biloba, lotus seedpod procyanidins, garlic extract, Loranthus longiflorus, Curcuma amada, and Rosmarinus officinalis have all been shown to confer neuroprotective effects in validated experimental models of study. The purpose of this review is to compile for the first time the protective effects of these plants against mobile phone-induced neuronal damage, as well as to highlight the various mechanisms of action that are elicited to invoke the beneficial effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) using the letrozole-supplemented stimulation protocol in breast cancer (BC) patients prior to their cancer treatment. Sixty-one BC patients (Stages 0-3) who were referred to a university IVF unit for fertility preservation (FP) and underwent embryo and/or oocyte cryopreservation between 2008 - 2020 were included in this retrospective study. Time intervals between breast surgery and initial fertility consultation (IFC)/completion of FP procedures were evaluated. COS outcomes were assessed and compared between the early follicular phase (EFP) and the random-start (RS) protocols. The patients' mean age was 33.3 ± 4.9 years. The mean time interval between breast surgery and IFC was 20.6 ± 11 (day, mean ± SD) and from IFC to completion of FP procedure was 14.7 ± 5.3. Overall, 9.1 ± 5.9 mature oocytes were obtained, with a peak serum oestradiol level of 388 ± 358 pg/mL. The number of oocytes obtained (11.5 ± 9.3 vs. 10.9a need for additional studies evaluating long-term follow-up of patients with their pregnancy outcomes.Inclusion of Black participants in clinical research is a national priority. Mobile applications and remote data collection may increase study access for diverse populations. This study examined the reliability and feasibility of two mobile smartphone application-based cognitive measures in a diverse middle aged and older adult sample. Black (n = 44; Mage = 59.93) and non-Hispanic white (NHW; n = 50; Mage = 61.06) participants completed traditional paper-based neuropsychological testing and two app-based measures, Arrows and Number Match. Intraclass correlations demonstrated poor to moderate reliability (range .417-.569) between performance on the app-based versions and performance on the traditional versions. Performance score differences by racial group were not statistically significant. Both Black and NHW participants rated the app-based measures as feasible and acceptable, though Black participants endorsed a stronger likelihood of future use. These findings add to the growing literature on remote cognitive testing .We investigated the role of ascorbic acid (AsA) to alleviate nickel (Ni) induced adverse effects on growth and concentration of Ni, copper (Cu), and manganese (Mn) in hydroponically grown wheat varieties viz. Galaxy, Punjab-2011, and FSD-08. Plants were exposed to five levels of Ni viz. 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg L-1. After 1 week, AsA (1 mM) was sprayed onto the Ni-stressed plants. Sotrastaurin FSD-08 produced the maximum SDW with and without AsA compared to other varieties. FSD-08, Galaxy, and Punjab-2011 witnessed 2.61-, 2.83-, and 7.5-fold increases in SDW with AsA, respectively. Wheat plants contained the maximum Ni in shoots and roots with a Ni level of 20 mg L-1 irrespective of varieties. Nickel in shoots decreased with AsA witnessing 13, 12, and 10% decrease in FSD-08, Punjab-2011, and Galaxy, respectively. Nickel in roots of FSD-08 decreased by 18% while increased by 3.34-fold and 3.50-fold in Galaxy and Punjab-2011, respectively with AsA. Nickel decreased Cu in shoot and Mn in shoot and root while Cu in roots of all wheat varieties increased. It was concluded that AsA improved the growth of Ni-stressed and FSD-08 performed better by maintaining good growth and less Ni in shoots compared to other varieties. The intraventricular blood flow changed by blood pump flow dynamics may correlate with thrombosis and ventricular suction. The flow velocity, distribution of streamlines, vorticity, and standard deviation of velocity inside a left ventricle failing to different extents throughout the cardiac cycle when supported by an axial blood pump were measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV) in this study. The results show slower and static flow velocities existed in the central region of the left ventricle near the mitral valve and aortic valve and that were not sensitive to left ventricular (LV) failure degree or LV pressure. Strong vorticity located near the inner LV wall around the LV apex and the blood pump inlet was not sensitive to LV failure degree or LV pressure. Higher standard deviation of the blood velocity at the blood pump inlet decreased with increasing LV failure degree, whereas the standard deviation of the velocity near the atrium increased with increasing intraventricular pressure. The experimental results demonstrated that the risk of thrombosis inside the failing left ventricle is not related to heart failure degree. The "washout" performance of the strong vorticity near the inner LV wall could reduce the thrombotic potential inside the left ventricle and was not related to heart failure degree. The vorticity near the aortic valve was sensitive to LV failure degree but not to LV pressure. We concluded that the risk of blood damage caused by adverse flow inside the left ventricle decreased with increasing LV pressure.
