Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are one of the most crucial growth factors that contribute to dentin formation. However, it is still unclear how BMP signaling pathways regulate postnatal crown and root dentinogenesis. BMPs transduce signals through canonical Smad and non-Smad signaling pathways including p38 and ERK signaling pathways. To investigate the roles of Smad and non-Smad signaling pathways in dentinogenesis, we conditionally deleted Bmpr1a, which encodes the type 1A receptor for BMPs, to remove both Smad and non-Smad pathways in Osterix-expressing cells. We also expressed a constitutively activated form of Bmpr1a (caBmpr1a) to increase Smad1/5/9 signaling activity without altered non-Smad activity in odontoblasts. The polysaccharide is first produced as homopolymeric mannuronan and subsequently, at the polymer level, C-5 epimerases convert M residues to G residues. The bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii encodes a family of seven secreted and calcium ion-dependent mannuronan C-5 epimerases (AlgE1-AlgE7). These epimerases consist of two types of structural modules the A-modules, which contain the catalytic site, and the R-modules, which influence activity through substrate and calcium binding. In this study, we rationally designed new hybrid mannuronan C-5 epimerases constituting the A-module from AlgE6 and the R-module from AlgE4. This led to a better understanding of the molecular mechanism determining differences in MG- and GG-block-forming properties of the enzymes. A long loop with either tyrosine or phenylalanine extruding from the β-helix of the enzyme proved essential in defining the final alginate block structure, probably by affecting substrate binding. Herein, the structural, electronic, and optical properties of mixed-cation mixed-metal perovskites MA1-x Cs x Pb0.25Sn0.75I3 were studied by employing the first-principles calculations for the first time. Our calculated results reveal that these perovskite materials possess direct band gaps in the range of 1.0-1.3 eV. Moreover, these compounds show excellent photovoltaic performance in terms of strong optical absorption coefficients compared with MAPbI3. Particularly, they also exhibit good structural stability and decrement of lead content. These results demonstrated that mixed-cation mixed-metal perovskites may be potential candidates for high-efficiency light-absorbing materials. Copyright © 2020 American Chemical Society.Inspired by a bacteriogenic, iron-based oxide material and a traditional Japanese red pigment, a bright yellowish-red pigment was prepared by heating an Al-containing iron oxyhydroxide precursor. The obtained red pigment had a unique porous disk-like structure, comprising Al-substituted hematite particles and crystalline alumina nanoparticles. Although these disk-like structures loosely gathered to form an aggregate in powder, they can be easily dispersed into a single, disk-like structure by simple ultrasonic irradiation. The powder exhibited a bright yellowish-red color and high thermostability, making it attractive as a coloring material for various industrial products needing a bright-red color, high weather resistance, and durability. Quantitative color measurements revealed extremely high L*, a*, and b* values that are much greater than those of commercially available hematite. The thermostability test showed that even after exposure to high temperatures, the pigment retained the red color, indicating its high thermostability. The unique microstructure should be strongly related to the bright yellowish-red color and the high thermostability of the developed red pigment. Copyright © 2020 American Chemical Society.The potential of lignosulfonates as widely underutilized byproducts of the pulp and paper industry for the synthesis of a biodegradable pesticide carrier system was assessed in this study. Design of experiment software MODDE Pro was for the first time applied to optimize lignosulfonate granule production using Myceliophthora thermophila laccase as a biocatalyst. Enzymatic cross-linking was monitored using size exclusion chromatography coupled online to multiangle laser light scattering, viscosity measurement, and enzyme activity. The determined optimal and experimentally confirmed incubation conditions were 33 °C, 30 cm3/min O2 supply, and 190 min reaction time. The granules were thereafter loaded with 2 g/kg 3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid (Dicamba), a broad-spectrum herbicide. According to the HPLC analysis, complete release of Dicamba was achieved after 48 h of release. This study showed the green production of a 100% lignosulfonate-based biodegradable solid carrier with potential application in agriculture.
