Mental Health in the UK
Since the NHS was established 70 years ago, medical advances and treatments have been made available free of charge to people in need. But mental health is not yet seen the same kind of progress.
Many reported feeling positive about their mental health, yet were worried that other people might not be as well. They also discussed the effect of economic downturns on their own and others well-being.
1. Helping yourself
One of the most crucial steps when you're experiencing mental health issues is seeking for help. It's crucial to seek assistance regardless of whether it's difficult. There are many ways to seek help, including treatment, lifestyle changes and medication. Each treatment is unique and therefore it is important to find what works best for you.
Recognizing that you or someone you know suffers from mental illness is the first step towards seeking assistance. It's crucial to act if you notice a shift in the way you perceive, thinks or feels. Most of the time, this means talking to them and seeking help. You might also join a support group, which can be helpful in finding people who are able to understand what you're experiencing.
It's also important to discuss with friends and family about how you feel. They can offer an ear to listen and could be able to refer you to an expert. Additionally, discussing your feelings can be a form of stress relief and can give you perspective on the events in your life.
Mental health issues can trigger many symptoms. These can range from depression and anxiety, to bipolar disorder, and even schizophrenia. The severity of mental health problems differs from person to. It is difficult to determine whether a symptom is an normal reaction to a stressful event or the sign that an illness of serious severity has developed.
Mental illnesses can have a significant impact on a person's daily life. They can affect everything from their relationships and work to their overall wellbeing and happiness. They can also have an enormous impact on your physical health. People who suffer from mental health issues are more likely to have physical symptoms that are not medically explained.
In recent years there has been a shift in how we think about mental health. The stigma around mental illness is decreasing, and more people are seeking treatment. Making yourself more comfortable is the first step to a happier, healthier life. The best way to start is with your primary health care provider. They are usually able to suggest a psychologist, psychiatrist, or specialist counselors who specialize in mental health issues.
2. Keep it up
Mental health issues are now receiving the attention they merit. A multitude of tragic stories in the media and high-profile campaigns, along with growing awareness, have brought them to the forefront. There is still a long way to go before physical and mental health in the UK are treated equally.
In England, mental health services are not ring-fenced, and therefore are not subject to the same pressures as acute or physical healthcare services when it comes to funding. This has led to some reports of the same level of disinvestment is happening, but evidence on this is difficult to find. The attempts to determine these trends have been hampered by a lack of consolidated data on the overall condition of local services and by the fact that the same system wide key performance indicators (e.g. the maximum wait time of 18 weeks for referral from primary care to a specialist) apply to both mental and physical health, but are interpreted differently when it comes to defining the budget and monitoring service availability and quality.
To tackle this issue, a new method is required to build mental health resilience. And this should be facilitated at the local level by those who are the best in their communities like community groups, faith groups, local charities, children's organisations and community-based peer support groups. These groups require the proper training and facilitation, as well as resources and support in order to contribute in developing mental wellness across all age groups.
GPs must also be given the tools to provide regular check-ins that aren't overwhelmed by demands and can connect patients to self-management advice or peer support. This will help reduce the strain on the NHS as a whole and will allow for greater capacity within the mental health services.
The general public must also be encouraged to play more actively in their own health by taking charge of their leisure time, choosing healthier lifestyles and seeking help when needed. This could include volunteering, taking part in community events and fundraising for local mental health charities, or by organising or attending workplace health events such as mindfulness sessions.
3. Take control
The UK is a world leader in the world when it comes to mental health. There is still plenty of work to be done. There are many who suffer from mental health issues but do not seek help because of the stigma. They usually wait until their symptoms are severe before seeking medical assistance. This can result in a longer period of suffering, more expensive treatment and greater risk of life-threatening illnesses such as cancer or heart disease.
The good news is that mental healthcare has advanced since the NHS launched 70 years ago. Mental illness is now being discussed more openly and the treatment options are more sophisticated. There is still much to be done, and stigma remains a major barrier.
As the number of people suffering from mental health issues continues to rise, pressure on services is growing. The government has committed to invest PS2.3 billion per year to expand and improve mental health services in the country. This will allow 2 million people to get assistance and improve outcomes.
There is also more being made to address the gap in the amount of money allocated to physical and mental health, as well as the obstacles that hinder people from accessing assistance. For example, a new fund is being created to provide culturally-appropriate advocacy services for people from minority communities, and a national programme is being developed to support the training of frontline staff in mental health.
There are also plans to establish a network of specialised mental health ambulances. This will decrease the number of general ambulance calls-outs for people in crisis and increase the speed of response and provide care to those with mental health problems. The government will also increase its investment in Improving Access to Psychological Therapies by another PS7 million to cut down on waiting time and increase the number who receive support.
There is always someone to help you if you are struggling. You can contact the Samaritans at 116 123, or visit a branch in your area. They provide free, non-judgmental and confidential support to anyone who is suffering from emotional stress. They are accessible via email, phone or by letter 24 hours a days.
4. Take mental health assessment
If you're worried about your mental health, it's crucial to act. The right support can keep you in good health and well.
One in four people will experience mental illness in the UK at some point during their lifetime. But, it is important to keep in mind that the majority of mental health problems can be overcome. Most are mild, short-term and can be treated with medication administered by your doctor. Certain conditions, such as anxiety and depression may be the result of life-changing events, such as a bereavement or a breakup in a relationship. Stress at work can be a to the cause.
We can all take steps to improve our mental health, such as eating a healthy diet, taking enough rest and exercising regularly, and learning to manage stress. Every person's needs are different and at times, we may require additional assistance. This could include talking therapies, occupational therapists or medications.
There's also a broad array of support and charity services that can assist with a myriad of issues, including housing, debt, addiction and eating disorders. The government has set out its aspirations for the mental health system in the Five Year Forward View, but it's our responsibility to ensure that these aspirations are realized.
As the Time for Action Report highlights, investing in the mental health of children and young people is crucial. CAMHS spending is currently behind spending on adult mental health and funding is an issue of lottery.
Health and social care professionals are increasingly putting prevention at the center of their efforts to improve the mental well-being of their communities. This is evident in the Prevention Concordat for Better Mental Health which brings together more than 140 organizations from the social and health care sectors who have committed to making the prevention of mental illness their top priority.
The NHS has stated that it is determined to address the stigma and inequalities that surround mental health, as well as the gap between mental and physical health care. However, there is a lot to do. We need to change the way we think about mental health and how we discuss it. We must break down the barriers that divide us and create an environment where mental health is valued as much as physical well-being.
