Statins, also known as HMG-CoA inhibitors, are a class of bioactive small molecules that efficiently reduce the levels of cholesterol, and therefore are commonly used to manage and prevent various cardiovascular diseases. With respect to their original medical indications, statins are currently in the group of the most prescribed drugs worldwide. Of note is that statins are perceived actually rather as agents that have pleiotropic activities; in addition to their inhibitory activity on the production of endogenous cholesterol. Statins may also affect cell proliferation, angiogenesis and/or migration (metastasis) of different cancer cells, and play a positive role in the chemoprevention of cancer, thus being the excellent candidates to be repurposed in oncology. Particularly intriguing in this context seems to be the promising role of statins on both the incidence and course of common malignant neoplasms in women. In this article, we review and discuss the effect of the use of statins in the treatment of three types of cancer, i.e., breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer, with the highest mortality among gynecological cancers.Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) materials have attracted much attention for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as a new catalyst, but they still have challenges in poor stability and high reaction over-potential. In this study, ultra-thin SnS2 nanocatalysts were synthesized by simple hydrothermal method, and low load of Pt was added to form stable SnS2-Pt-3 (the content of platinum is 0.5 wt %). The synergistic effect between ultra-thin SnS2 rich in active sites and individual dispersed Pt nanoclusters can significantly reduce the reaction barrier and further accelerate HER reaction kinetics. Hence, SnS2-Pt-3 exhibits a low overpotential of 210 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm-2. It is worth noting that SnS2-Pt-3 has a small Tafel slope (126 mV dec-1) in 0.5 M H2SO4, as well as stability. This work provides a new option for the application of TMDs materials in efficient hydrogen evolution reaction. Moreover, this method can be easily extended to other catalysts with desired two-dimensional materials.Cationic dendrimers are intriguing materials that can be used as antibacterial materials; however, they display significant cytotoxicity towards diverse cell lines at high generations or high doses, which limits their applications in biomedical fields. In order to decrease the cytotoxicity, a series of biocompatible hybrid hydrogels based on cationic dendrimers and carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils were easily synthesized by non-covalent self-assembly under physiological conditions without external stimuli. The cationic dendrimers from generation 2 (G2) to generation 4 (G4) based on trimethylolpronane (TMP) and 2,2-bis (methylol)propionic acid (bis-MPA) were synthesized through fluoride promoted esterification chemistry (FPE chemistry). FTIR was used to show the presence of the cationic dendrimers within the hybrid hydrogels, and the distribution of the cationic dendrimers was even verified using elemental analysis of nitrogen content. The hybrid hydrogels formed from G3 and G4 showed 100% killing efficiency towards Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. T-DXd molecular weight aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) with bacterial concentrations ranging from 105 CFU/mL to 107 CFU/mL. Remarkably, the hybrid hydrogels also showed good biocompatibility most probably due to the incorporation of the biocompatible CNFs that slowed down the release of the cationic dendrimers from the hybrid hydrogels, hence showing great promise as an antibacterial material for biomedical applications.Among advanced formulation strategies, nanoemulsions are considered useful drug-delivery systems allowing to improve the solubility and the bioavailability of lipophilic drugs. To select safe excipients for nanoemulsion formulation and to discard any haemolytic potential, an in vitro miniaturized test was performed on human whole blood. From haemolysis results obtained on eighteen of the most commonly used excipients, a medium chain triglyceride, a surfactant, and a solubilizer were selected for formulation assays. Based on a design of experiments and a ternary diagram, the feasibility of nanoemulsions was determined. The composition was defined to produce monodisperse nanodroplets with a diameter of either 50 or 120 nm, and their physicochemical properties were optimized to be suitable for intravenous administration. These nanoemulsions, stable over 21 days in storage conditions, were shown to be able to encapsulate with high encapsulation efficiency and high drug loading, up to 16% (w/w), two water practically insoluble drug models ibuprofen and fenofibrate. Both drugs may be released according to a modulable profile in sink conditions. Such nanoemulsions appear as a very promising and attractive strategy for the efficient early preclinical development of hydrophobic drugs. Background and objectives Expandable cages are frequently used to reconstruct the anterior spinal column after a corpectomy. In this retrospective study, we evaluated the perioperative advantages and disadvantages of corpectomy reconstruction with an expandable cage. Materials and Methods Eighty-six patients (45 male and 41 female patients, medium age of 61.3 years) were treated with an expandable titanium cage for a variety of indications from January 2012 to December 2019 and analyzed retrospectively. The mean follow-up was 30.7 months. Outcome was measured by clinical examination and visual analogue scale (VAS); myelopathy was classified according to the EMS (European Myelopathy Scale) and gait disturbances with the Nurick score. Radiographic analysis comprised measurement of fusion, subsidence and the C2-C7 angle. Results Indications included spinal canal stenosis with myelopathy (46 or 53.5%), metastasis (24 or 27.9%), spondylodiscitis (12 or 14%), and fracture (4 or 4.6%). In 39 patients (45.3%), additional dorsal stabilization (360° fusion) was performed. In 13 patients, hardware failure occurred, and in 8 patients, adjacent segment disease occurred. Improvement of pain symptoms, myelopathy, and gait following surgery were statistically significant (p less then 0.05), with a medium preoperative VAS of 8, a postoperative score of 3.2, and medium EMS scores of 11.3 preoperatively vs. 14.3 postoperatively. Radiographic analysis showed successful fusion in 74 patients (86%). As shown in previous studies, correction of the C2-C7 angle did not correlate with improvement of neurological symptoms. Conclusion Our results show that expandable titanium cages are a safe and useful tool in anterior cervical corpectomies for providing adequate anterior column support and stability.
