Not all bivalves are equally affected, clams being less affected than mussels, oysters, and razor clams. Due to their relatively low toxicity, and their low prevalence and concentration, it seems that these toxins do not pose an important risk for the mollusk consumers in the area.HT-2 toxin (HT-2), a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium species, is detected in a variety of cereal grain-based human food and animal feed. read more Apart from its well-established immunotoxicity and haematotoxicity, it also causes reproductive disorders. In the present study, we revealed the adverse effects of HT-2 on early oogenesis at the foetal stage. Pregnant mice were orally administered with HT-2 for 3 days at mid-gestation. Oocytes from female foetuses exposed to HT-2 displayed defects in meiotic prophase, including unrepaired DNA damage, elevated recombination levels, and reduced expression of meiotic-related genes. Subsequently, increased oxidative stress was observed in the foetal ovaries exposed to HT-2, along with the elevated levels of reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, catalase, and superoxide dismutase 1/2, thereby resulting in impaired mitochondrial membrane potential and cell apoptosis. Furthermore, pre-treatment with urolithin A, a natural compound with antioxidant activities, partially reversed the delayed meiotic process by alleviating oxidative stress. Since early oogenesis is essential to determine female fertility in adult life, this study indicated that brief maternal exposure to HT-2 toxin may compromise the fertility of a developing female foetus. In the last decade, the study of the origin and fate of plastic debris received great attention, leading to a new and broad awareness of the hazard represented by these particles for the environment and the biota. At the same time, the scientific consideration on the leading role of the environment regarding the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) increased. Both, microplastic particles (MPs) and ARB share pollution sources and, in aquatic systems, MPs could act as a novel ecological niche, favouring the survival of pathogens and ARB. MPs can host a specific microbial biofilm, referred to as plastisphere, phylogenetically different from the surrounding planktonic microbial community and from the biofilm growing on other suspended particles. The plastisphere can influence the overall microbiome of a specific habitat, by introducing and supporting different species and by increasing horizontal gene transfer. In this review we collect and analyse the available studies coupling MPs and antibiotic resistance in water, highlighting knowledge gaps to be filled in order to understand if MPs could effectively act as a carrier of ARB and antibiotic resistance genes, and pose a real threat to human health. The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted great shocks and challenges to the environment, society and economy. Simultaneously, an intractable issue appeared a considerable number of hazardous medical wastes have been generated from the hospitals, clinics, and other health care facilities, constituting a serious threat to public health and environmental sustainability without proper management. Traditional disposal methods like incineration, landfill and autoclaving are unable to reduce environmental burden due to the issues such as toxic gas release, large land occupation, and unsustainability. While the application of clean and safe pyrolysis technology on the medical wastes treatment to produce high-grade bioproducts has the potential to alleviate the situation. Besides, medical wastes are excellent and ideal raw materials, which possess high hydrogen, carbon content and heating value. Consequently, pyrolysis of medical wastes can deal with wastes and generate valuable products like bio-oil and biochar. Consequently, this paper presents a critical and comprehensive review of the pyrolysis of medical wastes. It demonstrates the feasibility of pyrolysis, which mainly includes pyrolysis characteristics, product properties, related problems, the prospects and future challenges of pyrolysis of medical wastes.Glyphosate and microplastics are widely found in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater environments due to their globally widespread application. Further, they have proved to have specific ecotoxicity effects on aquatic plants. However, few studies have focused on the effects of small plastic particles and glyphosate, or especially, their combined effect on vascular plants in freshwater ecosystems. This study aimed to conduct a simulated greenhouse experiment to investigate the ecotoxicity of polystyrene microplastics and glyphosate on the floating plant Salvinia cucullata by exposure to fluorescent polystyrene microplastics (1 μm; concentration, 3, 15, and 75 mg/L), glyphosate (5, 25, and 50 mg/L), and a mixture of the two (3 + 5, 15 + 25, and 75 + 50 mg/L) for seven days. Glyphosate significantly reduced the relative growth rate, photosynthetic capacity, and root activity of S. cucullata. Polystyrene microplastics did not significantly influence photosynthesis or leaf morphological characteristics but they significantly reduced relative growth rate and root activity in S. cucullata, indicating that the effects of microplastics on aquatic plants are potentially associated with different organs exposed to pollution. Polystyrene microplastics and glyphosate activated the plant antioxidant defense systems by increasing antioxidative enzyme activities including, superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and catalase to cope with oxidative stress. Synergistic effects (only observed in percent leaf yellowing) were observed when S. cucullata was exposed to a high concentrations (≥15 + 25 mg/L) of glyphosate and microplastics. Our results indicate that pervasive microplastics and herbicide contamination in freshwater may potentially affect the growth of aquatic plants.Cefepime/zidebactam is in clinical development for the treatment of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative infections. MICs of cefepime/zidebactam (11) and comparators against Enterobacterales (n = 563), Pseudomonas (n = 172) and Acinetobacter baumannii (n =181) collected from 15 Greek hospitals (2014-2018) were determined by reference broth microdilution method. The isolates exhibited high carbapenem resistance rates [(Enterobacterales (75%), Pseudomonas (75%) and A. baumannii (98.3%)]. Cefepime/zidebactam showed MIC50/90 of 0.5/2 mg/L, against Enterobacterales including metallo-β-lactamases (MBL)-producers. Reduced susceptibility rates to tigecycline (16.8%), colistin (47.4%), ceftazidime/avibactam (59.8%), and imipenem/relebactam (61%) indicated high prevalence of multi-drug resistance among Greek Enterobacterales. Cefepime/zidebactam exhibited MIC50/90 of 8/16 mg/L against Pseudomonas including MBL-producers. The MIC50/90 of ceftazidime/avibactam and imipenem/relebactam were high (≥32 mg/L). Cefepime/zidebactam showed MIC90 of 64 mg/L against A.
