METHODS Eligible YACC were 18-39 years, used Facebook and/or Instagram at least once per week, and cared for an adult cancer patient diagnosed 6 months-5 years prior (N = 34). Recruitment of a cross-sectional sample occurred through oncology clinics in Utah and online advertising by caregiving and cancer organizations from September 2017-June 2018. Semi-structured telephone interviews were recorded, transcribed, iteratively coded and qualitatively analyzed, yielding four categories concerning how YACC use social media. RESULTS Caregivers were most commonly spouses aged 29 years on average (range 21-38); cancer patients were 37 years (range 19-76). Analysis yielded four distinct yet related categories Category 1 Posting about cancer on social media often begins as a strategy for YACC to efficiently provide updates about the cancer patient. Category 2 Caregivers who actively post on social media experience a variety of different functional social supports to which they otherwise would not have access. Category 3 Posting about cancer online presents an opportunity for negative consequences. Category 4 Potential for negative consequences influences how some caregivers use social media. CONCLUSIONS Supportive services, including social media-based supports, are needed for YACC in formats that are convenient for them as they balance their caretaking duties with their daily lives. All rights reserved.PURPOSE Studies of medication persistence in plaque psoriasis have shown inconsistent results, likely due to differing definitions of nonpersistence and of the permissible gap between refills. Also, medication persistence information for two recently approved drugs, apremilast and ixekizumab, is limited. METHODS We use the Truven Health MarketScan claims database to assess persistence for six drugs adalimumab, apremilast, etanercept, ixekizumab, secukinumab, and ustekinumab. We define the permissible gap in three ways 150 days for ustekinumab and 90 days for all other drugs (150/90 model); 120 days for all drugs (120 model); and twice the days' supply for all drugs (days' supply model). To estimate unadjusted persistence, we use Kaplan-Meier curves, and a proportional hazards model to estimate the adjusted risk of non-persistence. RESULTS Ustekinumab is most sensitive to changes in the definition of permissible gap, likely because of its longer maintenance dosing interval. Among targeted drug-experienced patients using ustekinumab, median persistence is 358 days (95% confidence interval 343-371) in the 150/90 model and 189 days (179-199) in the days' supply model. Among targeted drug-experienced patients, median persistence in the days' supply model is longest for ixekizumab and secukinumab at 252 (217-301) and 222 (210-244) days, respectively. We also find that adjusted risk of nonpersistence increases by approximately 1% per year at treatment start. CONCLUSION The definition of permissible gap meaningfully changes both absolute and ordinal estimates of medication persistence. Each definition has unique limitations, which should be considered when interpreting persistence data. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as crucial regulators for a myriad of biological processes, and perturbations in their cellular expression levels have often been associated with cancer pathogenesis. In this study, we identified AATBC (apoptosis associated transcript in bladder cancer, LOC284837) as a novel lncRNA. AATBC was found to be highly expressed in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and increased AATBC expression was associated with poor survival in patients with NPC. Furthermore, AATBC promoted migration and invasion of NPC cells in vitro, as well as metastasis in vivo. AATBC upregulated the expression of the desmosome-associated protein Pinin (PNN) through miR-1237-3p sponging. In turn, PNN interacted with the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) activator ZEB1, and upregulated ZEB1 expression to promote EMT in NPC cells. Collectively, our results indicate that AATBC promotes NPC progression through the miR-1237-3p-PNN-ZEB1 axis. Our findings indicate AATBC as a potential prognostic biomarker or therapeutic target in NPC. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.OBJECTIVE Neurocognitive functioning (NCF), mood disturbances, physical functioning, and social support all share a relationship with health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, investigations into these relationships have not been conducted in persons with brain metastases (BM). PATIENTS AND METHODS Ninety-three newly diagnosed persons with BM were administered various cognitive batteries. Data were collected across a wide range of categories (ie, cognitive, demographic, disease/treatment, mood, social support, physical functioning). The Functional Assessment of Cancer Treatment (FACT) scale was used to measure HRQOL. RESULTS Mood and physical function correlated with lower HRQOL in every measured domain. Verbal learning and memory correlated with every FACT subscale except emotional quality of life. Social support also correlated with several HRQOL domains. Stepwise linear regression revealed that mood predicted general well-being and several FACT subscales, including physical, emotional and cognitive well-being.
