NADPH oxidases represent an original pharmacological target because they are the only enzymes whose main function is to produce reactive oxygen species. It is also a double target with the need for stimulation in chronic granulomatosis and inhibition reported in other pathologies (vascular, cancerous, neurological...). The complexity of the involvement of NADPH oxidases in pathophysiology has not yet made it possible to obtain a drug that effectively inhibits these enzymes at the clinical level. This issue of the forum aims to take stock of the obstacles and limitations to the development of these inhibitors both in their preclinical and clinical evaluation.Introduction Successful strategies preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission have resulted in increasing numbers of uninfected children exposed to maternal HIV and ART in-utero, and while breastfeeding. Some reports describe exposure as impacting neurodevelopment. Methods This cross-sectional analysis included 49 of the 70 HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) birth-enrolled children as the control arm of an observational cohort study of early treatment in HIV-infected infants in Johannesburg, South Africa. We used the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development-3rd Edition (BSID-III) to assess neurodevelopment at 12 months of age. Cognitive, language and motor subscale composite scores and performance categories were analysed. We evaluated associations between BSID-III performance categories and cohort variables. Results Evaluating composite scores according to performance categories showed a higher percentage of scores in the average, high average and superior categories as compared to test reference norms. Maternal BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and mid-upper arm circumference ≥ 32 cm were associated with higher than average infant language scores. Six children scored below average ( less then 90) - three in the cognitive and three in the language subscale. Conclusion No developmental delay was found in ART-exposed HEU children at 12 months of age. A small number of at-risk children suggest ongoing screening, referral and follow-up is needed.Based on the data obtained from 1014 Chinese employees, this study clarified the relationship between work hours, psychological distance, and the occupational mental health of employees. This study revealed a curvilinear and almost inverted U-shaped relationship between work hours and occupational mental health. Furthermore, the results showed that the optimum interval of work hours to maintain high-quality occupational mental health was indicated as "typical overtime work," and the employee-organizational psychological distance may positively moderate this inverted U-shaped relationship, and a "close" employee-organizational psychological distance may alleviate the pressure of work hours and help to maintain high-quality occupational mental health. This study examined the influence of people's short-term (e.g., convenience) and long-term (e.g., maintain weight) motives toward their romantic partner's health on their provision of health-related social control and autonomy support for their partner's health behaviors, as well as their indifference toward their romantic partner's health. Data from a sample of cohabiting couples (N = 212) were analyzed using multilevel path models. Results showed having more long-term motives for a partner's health lead to increased provisions of autonomy support and social control, and less indifference toward the partner's health, especially when the partner had lower long-term health motives themselves. In contrast, having more short-term motives for a partner's health was associated with providing less social control and autonomy support and showing more indifference toward the partner's health. Thus, people motivated to improve their partner's long-term health engage in more behaviors meant to improve their romantic partner's health choices, particularly when the partner has low motivation to regulate their own health behaviors. Background Silicone metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint arthroplasty has a high revision rate. It has been suggested that the preoperative degree of ulnar drift and radial wrist deviation influences the durability of MCP silicone arthroplasties. The goal of this study was to evaluate what factors are associated with reoperation after silicone MCP arthroplasty. Materials and Methods We retrospectively evaluated all adult patients who underwent MCP silicone arthroplasty between 2002 and 2016 at one institutional system for inflammatory arthritis. After manual chart review, we included 73 patients who underwent 252 arthroplasties. Fingers treated included 66 index, 67 long, 60 ring, and 59 small fingers. Results The overall reoperation rate was 9.1% (N = 23). Indications for reoperation were implant breakage (n = 11), instability (n = 4), soft tissue complications (n = 4), infections (n = 3), and stiffness (n = 1). There was a trend that patients who underwent single-digit arthroplasty had higher rates of revision (19% vs 3.5%, P = .067). GuggulsteroneE&Z Radiographic follow-up demonstrated joint incongruency in 50% of cases, bone erosion in 58% of cases, and implant breakage in 19% of cases. There was a trend toward higher rates of revision in patients without preoperative MCP joint subluxation (19% vs 6.7%, P = .065) The 1-, 5-, and 10-year implant survival rates were 96%, 92%, and 70%, respectively. Revision surgery occurred at less then 14 months in 15 patients (65%) and after 5 years in 8 (35%) patients. Conclusions Revision surgery after silicone MCP arthroplasty appears to be bimodal. Patients with greater hand function preoperatively may be at higher risk of revision surgery. This investigation aimed to investigate the viability of kefir enrichment with mucilage extracted from faba bean and chickpea. Four formulations of kefir were studied fermented milk (control), milk with 3% of faba bean mucilage, milk with 3% of chickpea mucilage and milk with 3% of inulin from artichoke (as prebiotic control). Kefirs were evaluated during 28 days' storage time at refrigerated temperature. Microbial viability, physicochemical properties (total titratable acidity, syneresis and pH), rheological properties (flow and dynamic shear rheology) and consumer's acceptability were evaluated. The number of bacteria significantly increased during storage period in all the formulations. The pH decreases during storage whereas total titratable acidity increased as was expected. Kefir supplemented with mucilage showed slightly lower but not significantly different sensory acceptability scores in comparison to the control. The novel mucilage ingredients could be prebiotic source for improving kefir quality.
