Prior research has showed that parent combustible cigarette use predicts cigarette use among their offspring. This study used prospective longitudinal data from parents and offspring to test whether parent electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use predicted a higher probability of ENDS use among their offspring.

Data were drawn from the Seattle Social Development Project - The Intergenerational Project (SSDP-TIP). Analyses included 295 families; 7% of parents were Native American/Alaskan Native, 18% were Asian American, 28% were African American, and 47% were European American. Multilevel modeling (in 2020) of data collected in 2015, 2016, and 2017 tested associations between parent self-reported ENDS use and concurrent self-reported ENDS use among offspring ages 10-25years (53% female). Parent combustible cigarette use was controlled. Analyses also examined the role of parent and offspring perceptions of the safety of ENDS in predicting offspring ENDS use.

About 12% of offspring and 8% of parents reported past-month ENDS use. Parent ENDS use predicted a higher probability of child ENDS use (Odds Ratio 5.68, p=.01), even after controlling parent past month cigarette use. Beyond parent nicotine product use, offspring perceptions of ENDS safety - but not parent perceptions of ENDS safety - contributed independently to offspring probability of past-month ENDS use.

It is important for parents, health providers, and policymakers to focus on preventing ENDS use among offspring of parents who use ENDS.

Time to recovery for symptom burden and neurocognition following a Sports-Related Concussion (SRC) has previously been determined by consolidating varying re-assessment time points into a singular point, and has not been established for Vestibular-Ocular-Motor (VOM) function or academic ability.

Establish when recovery of symptom burden, neurocognition, VOM function, and academic ability occurs in university-aged student-athletes.

Student-athletes completed an assessment battery (Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS), Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test (ImPACT), Vestibular Ocular-Motor Screening (VOMS), Perceived Academic Impairment Tool (PAIT)) during pre-season (n=140), within 48 hours, 4, 8 and 14 days post-SRC and prior to Return To Play (RTP) and were managed according to the Rugby Football Union' community pathway (n=42). Student-athletes were deemed recovered or impaired according to Reliable Change Index' (RCI) or compared to their individual baseline.

Symptom burden recovers by four days post-SRC on RCI and to baseline by eight days. VOM function and academic ability recovers by 8 days. Some student-athletes demonstrated worse performance at RTP on all tests by RCI and to baseline, except for on VOMS score and near point convergence by RCI change.

Variation in individual university-aged student-athletes requires a multi-faceted approach to establish what dysfunctions post-SRC exist and when recovery occurs.

Tinnitus network(s) consists of pathways in the auditory cortex, frontal cortex, and the limbic system. The cortical hyperactivity caused by tinnitus may be suppressed by neuromodulation techniques. Due to the lack of definitive treatment for tinnitus and limited usefulness of the individual methods, in this study, a combination of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and tailor-made notched music training (TMNMT) was used.

In this descriptive-analytic study, 26 patients with chronic unilateral tinnitus of the right ear were randomly divided into the clinical trial group (CTG) and the control group (CG). In both groups, six sessions of tDCS with 2mA intensity for 20min, with anode on F4 and cathode on F3, were conducted. Simultaneous with tDCS sessions, and based on TMNMT, the participant was asked to listen passively for 120min/day, to a CD containing her/his favorite music with a proper notch applied in its spectrum according to the individual's induced by tinnitus in CTG. Furthermore, this method showed an improvement of cognitive functions (auditory divided attention, selective attention and working memory) in the CTG.
Electrographic characteristics (extreme delta brush, posterior dominant rhythm and slow waves) may predict outcomes in anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis (NMDARE). However, whether changes in EEG sleep architecture predict outcomes are unknown. We examine electrophysiological characteristics including sleep architecture in a pediatric NMDARE population and correlate with outcomes at one year.

Retrospective chart and EEG review was performed in pediatric NMDARE patients at a single center. Patients with first EEGs available within 48h of admission, prior to treatment, and one-year follow-up data were included. EEGs were independently reviewed by two epileptologists, and a third when disagreement occurred. Clinical outcomes included modified Rankin scale (mRS) at one year.

Nine patients (6 females) (range 1.9-16.7 years) were included. Five of nine patients had loss of posterior dominant rhythm (PDR) and three of nine patients had absent sleep architecture. Loss of PDR correlated with a worse mRS score at one year (2.8 versus 0.5, p=0.038). Loss of PDR and loss of sleep architecture was associated with increased inpatient rehabilitation stay and in higher number of immunotherapy treatments administered. In multivariate analysis, absence of sleep architecture (p=0.028), absence of PDR (p=0.041), and epileptiform discharges (p=0.041) were predictors of mRS at one year.

Loss of normal PDR, absence of sleep architecture, and epileptiform discharges are associated with worse outcomes at one year which has not been reported before. EEG characteristics may help prognosticate in NMDARE. Larger studies are needed to confirm these findings.

This project sought to investigate whether an association may be observed between isotopic stress indicators and skeletal evidence of pathological conditions.

Deciduous and permanent teeth of 15 non-adults from two contemporaneous mid-19th century London burial grounds (City Bunhill, Lukin Street).

δ
C and δ
N was measured in the incrementally sectioned dentine collagen. Isotopic profiles for each individual included death during tooth development.

Individuals with skeletal evidence of chronic pathological conditions (e.g., rickets, tuberculosis) exhibited raised δ
N values of 0.5-1.7‰ in the months prior to death. AcFLTDCMK Isotopic change consistent with chronic physiological stress prior to death was also recorded in two individuals with no skeletal evidence of disease. An offset was observed between co-forming bone and dentine δ
N values in both populations, indicating that bone and dentine are not recording the same isotopic changes.

Isotopic change consistent with chronic physiological stress was observed in both those with and without skeletal evidence of disease, suggesting that adaptation to chronic stress in childhood was not uncommon within these 19th century London populations.

Chronic physiological stress prior to death may be seen in the incrementally sampled dentine of non-adults who die during tooth formation.

The temporal resolution of current dentine micro-sampling methods may mask or minimise visibility of shorter-term periods of stress or dietary change.

Future research should further explore the relationship between specific skeletal pathologies and isotopic evidence for stress.

This study aimed to characterize L. monocytogenes strains isolated from the production and processing environments of frozen sliced mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus). An analysis was executed along the mushroom processing chain including one mushroom grower and two mushroom processing factories. A total of 153 L. monocytogenes strains were isolated, which could be grouped in three PCR serogroups, namely, serogroup 1/2a-3a (39.2%), serogroup 1/2b-3b-7 (34.0%) and serogroup 4b-4d-4e (26.8%). A selection of 44 L. monocytogenes strains isolated from the processing environment after cleaning and disinfection (C&D) and from frozen sliced mushrooms was genotyped by whole genome sequencing (WGS), because these strains pose a potential risk for product contamination after C&D and for human consumption. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) revealed 11 clonal complexes (CCs), with diverse, and shows the importance of hygienic measures to control L. monocytogenes along the frozen sliced mushroom production chain.Bisphenol AF (BPAF), one of the main alternatives to bisphenol A, has been frequently detected in various environmental media, including the human body, and is an emerging contaminant. Epidemiological investigations have recently shown the implications of exposure to BPAF in the incidence of diabetes mellitus in humans, indicating that BPAF may be a potential diabetogenic endocrine disruptor. However, the effects of BPAF exposure on glucose homeostasis and their underlying mechanisms in animals remain largely unknown, which may limit our understanding of the health risks of BPAF. To this end, zebrafish (Danio rerio), an emerging and valuable model in studying animal glycometabolism and diabetes, were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (5 and 50 μg/L) and 500 μg/L BPAF for 28 d. Several key toxicity endpoints of blood glucose metabolism were detected in our study, and the results showed significantly increased fasting blood glucose levels, hepatic glycogen contents and hepatosomatic indexes and decreased muscular glycogen contents in the BPAF-exposed zebrafish. The results of quantitative real-time PCR showed the abnormal expression of genes involved in glycometabolic networks, which might promote hepatic gluconeogenesis and inhibit glycogenesis and glycolysis in the muscle and/or liver. Furthermore, the failure of insulin regulation, including plasma insulin deficiency and impaired insulin signaling pathways in target tissues, may be a potential mechanism underlying BPAF-induced dysfunctional glycometabolism. In summary, our results provide novel in vivo evidence that BPAF can cause fasting hyperglycemia by interfering with glycometabolic networks, which emphasizes the potential health risks of environmental exposure to BPAF in inducing diabetes mellitus.
