Mental Health Services on the NHS
The NHS has responded to the rise in mental health issues by providing services. This includes:
The Long Term Plan has made a renewed commitment to grow investment in mental health services more quickly than the NHS budget overall. This will include specialist suicide prevention work.
Helping yourself
One in four of us will experience a mental health problem at some moment in our lives. The good news is that there are a variety of different ways to seek help and most of us recover over time. But it's important to know what help is available and who can offer it.
You can seek assistance from your physician or the local health center, or a mental health team in your local area. These teams consist of occupational and nurse speech therapists, and psychotherapists. how you can help work with the clients who seek their services. You can get individual or group therapy, based on the type of assistance you need.
Your doctor will typically request you to fill out the form so that they can make a referral to a community mental health team. They will also ask you what you require in terms of support. Then, you will be viewed by a member of a mental health team, which may include a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker. In some instances your evaluation and treatment will be conducted by a specialist in clinical nursing. You can contact the NHS 111 helpline when you're in crisis. If you're already supported by mental health services it's a good idea to call your usual team first, unless it's outside of core hours, the weekend or on a bank holiday.
The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health included plans to establish more multidisciplinary, place-based community mental health teams, with connections to primary care networks. These teams will increase the quality of the care that is provided to those who are in a crisis, and provide support to patients within their communities and at home rather than in hospitals.
The plan also aims at making emergency services available by cutting down wait times and opening up more beds. It also proposed to introduce mental health transport vehicles and make sure that every ambulance has a mental health liaison nurse in their control rooms to ensure people suffering from a mental health crisis are assisted in emergencies.
Treatment options
The NHS provides a variety of treatment options for mental health issues. Disorders that are less severe are usually treated by GPs and more serious conditions require a specialist team. These teams work in primary and community mental healthcare services as well as psychiatric hospitals. There are also safe places where you can seek assistance if you are feeling in a crisis.
Talking therapies are among the most common types of treatment for depression and anxiety. These programs, formerly known as IAPT (Interactive Assessment and Psychotherapy), have seen their referral numbers increase each year since they introduced in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan has committed to expanding these programs to 1.9 million people by 2023/2024.
Psychiatric medications are another crucial component of treatment. They can alleviate symptoms by changing the way the brain's chemicals work. They can be used to lessen the negative effects of other treatments. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medication for you.
There are many different types of talk therapy, including individual therapy and group therapy. Some of these can be delivered in person, but others can be done via a remote device. Some patients prefer face-to face treatment, but it is the choice of the patient. Mind is one of many charities that provide support groups and classes. Their website has a lot of information that is reliable, however you must be aware that there's plenty of misleading or false information available on the internet regarding mental health issues.
While the NHS is working to improve its mental health services however, it is still struggling to meet the demands. There are 54 mental health trusts in the UK, and most of they receive funding from clinical commissioning groups to provide their service. They are usually located in a particular region however, they are also able to be commissioned to deliver national services.
The absence of resources is a major issue. There are concerns over the quality and availability of nurses and psychiatrists. The NHS is trying to improve the quality of care by introducing new ways of work and delivering more training. It also introduces safer and more effective ways to treat people in crisis, such as mobile crisis teams, as well as safe areas.
We are here to help you
Since the NHS was launched 70 years ago there have been a lot of positive changes for people with mental health issues. The options for treatment have grown and social barriers have been broken down. However, there is still much to be done.
People experiencing mental health problems need to be able to access the assistance they require quickly and easily. That's why the NHS is working hard to improve services for people who need them. We will ensure that no acute hospital does not have a mental health liaison in A&E departments and wards for patients by 2020/21. We will also ensure that 70% of these services will meet the "core 24" standard by 2023/24, working towards 100% coverage thereafter.
We will also expand services for the community, such as talking therapy, to offer support for hundreds of thousands of individuals suffering from mental health problems regardless of whether they are serious or common. We will continue to develop our national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies program (IAPT) to ensure that more people suffering from mental health issues can be seen quicker by qualified therapists.
The NHS offers free, confidential helplines to anyone suffering from mental health issues. These include the Samaritans and Mind and Rethink. These helplines are operated by trained volunteers and provide a safe space to talk or provide information and advice on how to tackle your mental health issues.
There are also local organizations that provide help and advice to those with mental health issues. Self-help guides, coping techniques and other activities are all possible. Many of these organisations offer face-toface support groups to those who would prefer it.
For students, there's the University's Open Door Team which offers the opportunity to visit a counselling center for those who feel depressed or stressed. Nightline is a student counseling service that offers private listening as well as information and support from knowledgeable volunteers. Charities such as Mind and Rethink can provide many sources of information and support, both on the internet and in local groups. They can also offer a variety of courses and activities, from mindfulness to art groups which can be helpful for people who suffer from mental health issues.
Referring someone to you
Mental health services are under pressure and GPs have to make difficult choices about which specialist services to refer their patients to. The doctor will take a patient's medical history into account and then recommend them to a service they believe could be able to assist. They can send a referral to an NHS trust or an independent provider.
A mental health professional will review the referral to determine if it is appropriate or not. If the specialist doesn't like the referral, they'll call the GP and explain the reasons. They can also ask the GP for more information or to change the referral.
Referrals to the local Community Mental Health Team can be made through the NHS e-Referral Service. The system allows GPs and other health professionals to refer people to either a mental health clinical assessment service or directly to an appointment with an outpatient. However, not all CMHTs provide both options, and the system isn't able to be used for every kind of mental health referral.
A GP may decide to refer a patient to a specialized community mental health service (CMT). These are usually run either by a large hospital or local healthcare organization. CMTs can be a good alternative for those looking to consult a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist, but don't require inpatient care. They can also offer an early intervention service in which psychiatrists collaborate with therapist in order to assist a person overcome an issue or improve the quality of their lives.
CMTs face the challenge of making sure that all referrals are received within a reasonable time. Many referrals are deemed urgent even though they may not be. This can result in delays and over-working for those who aren't in a crisis.
To combat this problem, a few CMHTs have tried to establish more uniform standards for what constitutes an urgent referral. This has been achieved by using the standardised referral forma that requires the referrer to decide if the situation is urgent. The form includes a box that the referrer can tick if they feel that the referral is urgent.
