Finding the Best Medication For ADHD
The most common medication prescribed for ADHD is stimulants. They include methylphenidates and amphetamines. best adhd medication for adults -acting stimulants start working in under an hour and need to be taken multiple times per day. Long-acting stimulants last for up to 16 hours and are typically taken just once per day.
Your doctor may prescribe antidepressants or other kinds of medication "off-label" to treat ADHD symptoms. These are approved medications to treat other conditions, like depression or anxiety.
Stimulants
The most common medication used to treat ADHD is stimulants. They improve alertness, concentration, and reduce the amount of impulsivity. They do this by reducing the absorption of dopamine as well as norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters that enhance brain activity and help different parts of the brain communicate with one another. These are controlled substances due to the potential for misuse. Anyone who takes stimulants must avoid illegally produced versions, which are often more potent and carry higher risks of addiction and overdose. They can be taken on a daily basis, on a weekly basis or "as needed". Most people begin with a small amount and gradually increase the dosage. Doctors will be able to monitor your child's progress with these medications by requiring you to complete a behavior rating scale and observe the symptoms. You can also take weight, height, pulse and blood pressure measurements.
Amphétamines and Methylphenidate are the most frequently prescribed stimulants to treat ADHD. They are available in short-acting and long-acting versions. Short-acting medications are taken more frequently than daily. Long-acting medications are taken only once a day. Short-acting drugs have a less dramatic effect, and starts to take effect in 30 to 45 minutes. It lasts for 3 to 6 hrs. Long-acting medication has an extended effect that begins after 2 to 4 hrs and lasting for up to 12 hours.
These medications may cause side effects, such as heart problems and high blood pressure. They can also trigger a jittery feeling or headache. Tell your doctor about any adverse effects so they can determine if you need to alter the medication or reduce the dosage.
The majority of children and adults with ADHD will experience some adverse reactions when taking medication. It's crucial to find a plan of treatment that is suitable for you and your family to remain as efficient as you possibly can. It's important to follow your doctor's instructions and report any changes you or your child may experience in mood or symptoms.
Nonstimulants are generally used when a person experiences an adverse reaction to stimulant drugs or doesn't respond well to them (up to 30 percent of individuals don't respond to stimulant medications). FDA has approved four medications that are non-stimulant to treat ADHD. These include Atomoxetine (Strattera), Qelbree (Guanfacine), and Strattera (Qelbree). Some antidepressants, such as Wellbutrin and Wellbutrin, are also prescribed "off-label" for ADHD treatment. These drugs are less prone to misuse and are less likely to cause insomnia or agitation. However, they're not as effective at controlling impulsivity and hyperactivity.
