Recent studies suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic has increased alcohol sales and alcohol related problems. This may be due to the synergistic effects of unemployment, stress from childcare or additional caregiving responsibilities, reduced social interactions and negative coping strategies. Weerakoon and colleagues set out to identify the most robust risk factors for alcohol consumption, binge drinking, and changes in drinking patterns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One-third of the sample reported consuming more alcohol after COVID-19 compared to pre-COVID-19. In addition, each additional week spent at home under stay-at-home orders was increased the odds of binge drinking by 19%. As stress continues, researchers should continue assessing the longitudinal effects of COVID-19 lockdowns with the goal of early identification for those at the highest risk of problematic alcohol use.Arsanilic acid (ASA) residue, which is the most common contaminant in edible animal tissues such as pork and liver, has caused environmental and food-safety concerns. In this study, direct and indirect competitive fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assays (dc-FLISA and ic-FLISA) incorporating quantum dots (QDs) as the fluorescent label were developed for the first time to detect ASA residues in edible pork and animal liver. Monoclonal antibodies against ASA and rabbit anti-mouse antibody were conjugated to orange QDs with excitation wavelengths at 450 nm, and the QD-Abs served as detection probes. The limits of detection for dc-FLISA and ic-FLISA were 0.11 ng/mL and 0.001 ng/mL, respectively. QD-FLISA was used to analyse spiked samples; recoveries ranged from 80.2%-91.2% in dc-FLISA and 82.5%-91.2% in ic-FLISA, and the coefficients of variations (CV) were less than 12%. Compared with conventional indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA), the QD-FLISA described here was more sensitive and accurate in the analysis of ASA residues in animal tissues. Moreover, the results of QD-FLISA correlated well with HPLC. These results indicate that dc-FLISA and ic-FLISA are sensitive and reliable for detection of ASA residues in edible animal tissues.Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) in milk powders, particularly in infant formulas, have been and continue to be a major concern to the public worldwide. These contaminants are likely derived from environmental pollution, manufacturing process and packaging materials. In this study, 23 Chinese commercial milk powder products packaged in four types of materials, i.e. metal cans, paper containers, paperboard boxes with internal bags, and aluminium foil-plastic bags, were collected and stored for 1 year. The total and surface MOH in these samples were detected and compared before and after storage to understand the MOH migration during storage, despite no mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOAH) were detected. The contents of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and polyolefin oligomeric saturated hydrocarbons (POSH) in metal cans were the least among the four packages and changed little during storage, which suggested that little MOH migration occurred in metal material. Despite all the food contact materials in the other three packagings were the aluminium foil-plastic composite, the similar low migration occurred in the aluminium foil-plastic bags and internally contained composite bag(s) in paperboard boxes. However, both total and surface MOSH and POSH easily migrated from the paper-plastic-aluminium composite of paper containers during storage. These findings are helpful for the selection of packaging materials in manufacturing milk powder products or other foods.
To quantitatively compare microvascular features in the macula of patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) using fluorescein angiography (FA) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).
Patients with DR were recruited from the Cairo University Hospital. FA was performed using a Topcon TRC-50DX or Heidelberg Spectralis HRA+OCT. OCTA was performed using an Optovue RTVue-XR Avanti. FA images were cropped and aligned to the corresponding OCTA images using i2k Align Retina software. The foveal avascular zone (FAZ), area of ischemia, and microaneurysms (MAs) were manually quantified using ImageJ. The fractal dimension (FD) was calculated from each skeletonized image using the FracLac plugin of ImageJ after retinal vascular segmentation.
Twenty-four eyes of 17 patients were evaluated, but only 18 eyes were successfully aligned. There was no difference in FAZ area measured for FA and OCTA images. Compared with OCTA images, FD was significantly less for FA images (1.66±0.048 versus 1.72±0.023,

Automatic alignment facilitates quantitative comparison of the microvascular features in DR.This study analysed how Polish medical students are socialised to cooperate with the pharmaceutical industry via informal, hidden, and null curricula. Nine focus groups were run with medical students in their second year and upwards at three Polish medical universities. Initially, most students had difficulty in discerning pharmaceutical companies' presence in their education, but on reflection they all recognised this presence. Students said that they were surrounded by small medical gifts provided by companies, met pharmaceutical representatives, and took part in events for physicians organised and/or sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry. Nevertheless, they did not think they were the main target of the industry's marketing activities, saying that these were largely aimed at practicing doctors, and that they were only targeted as opportunities arose. Students' statements make it clear that their socialisation takes place within a culture which consents to medical professionals' cooperation with the industry.
