ADHD Medication - A Guide to Prescription and Non Prescription ADHD Medication
ADHD medication can help to control hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention. There are two types of drugs - stimulants and non-stimulants.
Stimulants are the most commonly prescribed ADHD medications in Europe and the UK. They are a part of the methylphenidate class of drugs (including Ritalin) and the amphetamine salts.
GPs are advised to keep the prescribed amount for 28 days and not increase the dosage during the supply disruption. Doctors are also urged to consider alternative bio-equivalent products.
Licensed
In the UK the UK, stimulants and nonstimulants are both deemed acceptable for the treatment of ADHD. Stimulant meds are used to increase the activity of chemicals in the brain that help manage attention and take action, are typically initially offered, since they are the most established. They include methylphenidate (Ritalin) and amphetamine-based medication such as lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse). add adhd medications are available in either long or short acting formulations, also known as immediate release and modified release respectively.
Atomoxetine, also referred to as Strattera is a non-stimulant medicine that was recently approved for treating ADHD. This will help with concentration and working memory issues. It has been proven to significantly reduce symptoms for adults.
However, there are people who are not enthusiastic about taking a drug and would prefer alternative or natural treatments. There are a number of ways to address this such as psychoeducation and coaching to self-help strategies and peer support groups. These are often paired with oral medications to maximize the effects.
It is important that you always consult your GP before starting any supplement or alternative treatment. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency states that it is illegal to market any product that claims to treat ADHD without being properly authorised.
The best way to begin the process of obtaining an ADHD diagnosis is to locate a psychiatrist in your region who specialises in mental health and has experience of diagnosing adults with ADHD. The psychiatrist will be able to provide you with an official diagnosis that you can use to prove your insurance eligibility, or if you need to prove your condition in any other way.
After you've been diagnosed, your psychiatrist can refer you to an approved UK medication for a trial. A clinical professional, like a psychiatrist nurse will supervise the trial. This is known as titration and will involve the medication being adjusted at regular intervals until the correct dosage is found to reduce your symptoms whilst remaining tolerable.
During this period, open communication with your psychiatrist is vital and it must be made clear that you are able to stop the trial at any time. Unfortunately, certain neurodiversity groups may be moralistic about the use of medication for ADHD. This can lead to people being divided into "good people" who don't want medications and 'bad' people who require them to manage their symptoms.
Taking ADHD medication is always a choice for the individual and no one should be forced to do so. Talk therapy is an effective treatment option for adults with ADHD. It should be the first line of treatment. However, it can not cure ADHD. It is only a way to manage symptoms, and does not alter negative ways of coping. Medication is an effective and safe option for a lot of people with ADHD. If you decide to take meds, they will only ever be prescribed by a psychiatrist and the decision should be based on your personal requirements.
