ADHD Medication
ADHD medications can help alleviate a variety of symptoms of the disorder, but they cannot cure it. Typically, your doctor will prescribe medication along with education, counseling, and behavior therapy.
The most commonly prescribed medication for ADHD is stimulant drugs. They work by increasing and balancing the levels of brain chemicals that control attention and behavior. They comprise methylphenidates (Concerta, Ritalin) and amphetamines, such as Dexedrine.
Methylphenidate
Among the most widely studied stimulant medications for ADHD, methylphenidate has been proven to be safe and effective for children and adults. It is available in different forms such as chewable tablets as well as liquids, pills and extended-release capsules. It is also available in a single-isomer form that only contains right-handed molecules and not the left-handed ones. (Brand name Focalin XR; Generic name dexmethylphenidate-ER).
Some people may suffer from side effects of the methylphenidate medication, including headaches or a loss of appetite. These effects are typically minimal, and they will disappear once the patient has become used to the medication. If you experience any of these side effects you should consult your doctor. They could alter the dosage or prescribe a new medication.
In certain instances methylphenidate may cause mood changes, such as feeling depressed or aggressive. This is rare but can be a serious issue if you have an existing mental illness, such as bipolar disorder. In rare cases methylphenidate may also trigger a manic episode in people suffering from bipolar disorder.
Methylphenidate can increase your blood pressure and heart rate which is not a good thing for those with heart issues. It should be avoided by anyone who has an history of heart failure or structural heart disease particularly in young adults. It should also not be used by those suffering from phenylketonuria. It is an inherited condition which requires a low protein diet plan. You should always tell your doctor if you suffer from an issue with your heart before taking this medication.
Lisdexamfetamine
Lisdexamfetamine is a FDA-approved drug that treats attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children. It is also an effective treatment for binge-eating disorders (BED). It is a central nervous system stimulant that increases activity in certain parts of the brain. It is only available on prescription.
The drug could cause serious side effects when taken in combination with other medications, such as anticholinergics and sedatives. This combination may increase the risk of having seizures and heart problems. It is also a risk if you are driving or operating machinery. Avoid drinking alcohol when taking Vyvanse, and be careful not to drive until you know how the drug affects you. If you have to dispose of your medication, use a program to take back medicine or mix it with a non-toxic substance such as dirt or cat litter and throw it away in the trash of your home.
Studies of lisdexamfetamine show that it is as efficacious as the long-acting methylphenidate compounds and the non-stimulant atomoxetine. A recent European study found that lisdexamfetamine may be even more efficacious than methylphenidate.
Studies on lisdexamfetamine show that it improves performance in both workplace and school environments. Brown et al37 conducted a small open-label study that demonstrated significant improvements in a mock workplace. A different study by Wigal and al38 revealed improvements in performance on a permanent Product Measure of Performance test.
Atomoxetine
Atomoxetine is different from stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall(dextroamphetamine), or Vyvanse(lisdexamfetamine). It is not a central nerve system stimulant, but instead a noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor. Noradrenaline is a chemical found in the brain that transmits messages from one nerve to the next it is an organic chemical. Noradrenaline is recycled by nerve endings following sending messages. Atomoxetine blocks this recycling and increases levels of active noradrenaline in the brain. This improves attention and decreases impulse-driven behavior.
The medication is taken orally and is available in capsule form. It is usually prescribed twice or once a day, but may be given more frequently if necessary. It is crucial to follow the doctor's instructions closely, particularly at the beginning of treatment. Take the medicine after food and drink plenty of water. Do not mix with hot drinks or other medicines unless directed otherwise.
Studies show that atomoxetine improves ADHD symptoms in adolescents and children but it is not as effective than dexamfetamine and methylphenidate. It's also less effective than non-stimulant medications, such as tricyclic antidepressants, as well as clonidine. Atomoxetine can cause dizziness, fainting, and lightheadedness. To avoid this, you must not be able to get up too quickly from a sitting position. You should also avoid smoking cigarettes or alcohol while taking this drug. You should also talk to your doctor regarding the best diet you or your child could follow.
Adderall
Adderall is a medication used to improve alertness and concentration. It works by increasing the levels of dopamine as well as norepinephrine in the brain. Dopamine helps reinforce positive behaviors and norepinephrine regulates heart rate, blood vessels, and blood pressure.
Adderall doesn't cause high when used in the dose recommended by your doctor. Iam Psychiatry can still cause side effects, such as dry mouth and insomnia. If your child or teenager is experiencing these symptoms, talk to their doctor. The doctor could be in a position to switch medications or alter the dosage.
Stimulant medication is a common treatment for ADHD however, it can cause problems for some kids. These issues can range from school-related problems to social issues. In addition, stimulants are used by teens to get an "buzz." They may even cause addiction. Fortunately, most of these problems can be prevented.
Children with ADHD have difficulty sleeping at the night. The medication may help them sleep. However, it's essential to limit caffeine and screen time prior to the time of sleep. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.
Adderall contains amphétamine, a controlled substance. It can cause a false positive in drug screening tests. It is important to provide this information to your coach or employer when you participate in sports. The length of time that Adderall stays in the body varies from one person, which is why it's recommended not to take it in the last two to four days prior to your next test.
Dexedrine
Dexedrine is an extremely powerful stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It works similarly to other ADHD medications by increasing the neurotransmitters in the brain. It increases the brain's neurotransmitters and decreases the impulsivity and hyperactivity. It also improves listening abilities and alters how the person feels. It is available in short-acting tablets and extended-release capsules (Dexedrine Spansule). It is a Schedule II substance, which means it can cause addiction. It may also increase blood pressure and heart rate. Inform your doctor right away if this happens.
Many children with ADHD have side effects from stimulant medications. They may suffer from stomach issues sleep issues, stomach pains or become irritable or aggressive. These adverse effects can be reduced or eliminated by changing the dosage and formula or the type of medication.
The medications are not able to cure ADHD however they can aid children manage their emotions and stay focused. They also can improve their performance at school. If the drugs are removed, ADHD symptoms may return. It is essential to take them exactly as directed by your physician.
The effects of stimulants can increase the heart rate in certain patients, and doctors should monitor the blood pressure and heart rhythm. They can also trigger sleep problems and changes in appetite. The most effective method to treat ADHD is with a combination of medication as well as therapy and training. Children who receive treatment with ADHD typically have lower IQs on the full scale than those who do not. They are more likely to need special education and remedial academic services, and require more years to complete high school. They are more likely to quit college.
Ritalin
When Ritalin was first introduced to treat ADHD it was created with first-graders and kindergarteners in mind, as they only required the medication for three or four hours each day. As children age, they become more unable to focus, and thus require a longer-lasting drug. There are medications that act like stimulants but last for up to 12 hours. These medicines are called "methylphenidates," and they increase the levels of two chemicals in the brain that influence concentration, namely norepinephrine and dopamine. The medicine is available in a variety of forms, like pills that can either be swallowed whole or dissolving. It is also available in liquids that can be squeezed into the oral cavity and patches that stick to the skin.
The medication does not cure ADHD but it can aid in staying focused and less fidgety at work or at school. It helps people follow instructions and pay attention. It can also trigger side effects like abdominal pain, insomnia and eating disorders. It can also cause a worsening of symptoms like anxiety or agitation. Psychosis can also be a trigger. It is essential to consult an expert right away when you experience any of these symptoms.
The DEA classifies stimulant medications as Schedule II drugs since they are susceptible to abuse. They can only be purchased on prescription and must be kept away from children and adults who might abuse them. Atomoxetine, guanfacine and other Schedule II drugs have fewer adverse effects than stimulants.
