The main objective of this study was to evaluate the morbidity and mortality following periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) after total hip arthroplasty. The secondary objectives were to explore risk factors for mortality and compare outcomes by method of treatment.

A multicenter retrospective study was conducted (2016-2017) of all PFFs after total hip arthroplasty. We collected data on ASA score, Charlson comorbidity index, type of fracture, method of treatment, timing of surgery, length of stay, systemic and local complications and mortality. Functional outcome was assessed in terms of preoperative and postoperative ambulatory status. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed in the sample to identify risk factors for mortality.

A total of 107 patients were evaluated and their mean age was 81 years old. The most common type of fracture according to the Vancouver classification was B1 (52.4% of patients), followed by B2 fractures (31.8%). The mortality rate during the first month was 9.3% y management, this study highlights the ambulatory status impairment and high rate of complications and mortality after PFF. Although the mortality rate during the first year was similar to that observed in other studies on PFFs, we found a higher mortality rate within the first month.
Peritrochanteric fractures are a growing problem and complications relating to operative fixation of these fracture, including varus collapse and screw cutout, are common in elderly osteoporotic patients. We hypothesize that unlocked nails will demonstrate increased varus collapse and inferior construct stiffness in specimens with increased diaphyseal medullary diameter.

Sixteen non-cadaveric osteoporotic biomechanical femur specimens were utilized in this study, with eight specimens having an artificially large femoral canal to represent Dorr C femurs. All femurs were instrumented with a short cephalomedullary nail with and without distal cross-lock screw fixation and had an unstable intertrochanteric fracture created in a repeatable pattern. Specimens underwent cyclic compression to a maximal load of 1000N with segmental motion quantified through the use of visual tracking markers. Statistical comparisons were performed using one-way ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc analysis to determine differences between sp osteoporosis who might otherwise be as risk for varus collapse, device failure, and malunion.
The association between symptoms of depression and risks for cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains equivocal for African American (AA) mothers. We examined the association between social determinants of health (perceived discrimination), and cardiovascular risk (BMI) on symptoms of depression in a sample of young AA mothers.

Secondary data from 219 adult AA mothers between the ages of 21 and 46 with an average BMI of 29.8 and yearly family income of $14,999 were analyzed using a latent growth model that evaluated four time points to assess changes in symptoms of depression.

Initial BMI was significantly associated with initial symptoms of depression (b=0.12, p=.019). Perceived discrimination (unfair treatment) was associated with higher initial symptoms of depression (b=1.14, p=.017).

The findings suggest that elevated BMI and perceived discrimination are associated with higher reported symptoms of depression among young, socioeconomically disadvantaged AA mothers. These results advance the scientific understanding of young AA mothers' risk for symptoms of depression and CVD by elucidating the impact of perceived discrimination and social experiences on mental health. Further studies of SDoH and CVD risk factors and perceived racism and depression are needed to shed light on the long-term mental health impact on AA mothers and their children.

A cross-sectional survey with purposive sampling comprising 567 inpatients and 549 outpatients was conducted among eight psychiatric care facilities in Taiwan to examine the factors influencing patient-perceived care quality. Inpatients and outpatients perceived moderate quality of care, where "Encounter" was reported as the highest dimension. Inpatients perceived "Secure environment" as the lowest; outpatients rated "Discharge/Referring" as the lowest. Hospital region and customer loyalty were significantly associated with patient-perceived care quality. Other significant factors were also identified inpatient employment, perceived mental health and treatment effects, understanding diagnosis, previous treatment, and visited by appointment.Three focus groups were conducted with African American women with elevated cardiometabolic risk to better understand how Superwoman Schema/the strong Black woman role influences their stress and how this cognitive-emotional aspect of health may need to be targeted in future research on cardiometabolic health disparities, such as prediabetes and diabetes. Results from this study revealed that participants' descriptions of stress and the superwoman role were consistent with the Superwoman Schema Conceptual Framework, including specific emphasis on 1) an obligation to manifest strength, 2) an obligation to suppress emotions and 3) an obligation to help others. Implications for targeting Superwoman Schema and stress as social determinants of health are described.Little is known about the common experience of depression in men with physical disabilities. selleck chemicals llc To help address this gap, we present findings from a qualitative study situated in the social determinants of health (SDH). Findings describe the detrimental effects of marginalization, economic precarity, restrictive masculine norms, stigma, and the need to resist ableist messages on men's health and well-being. It is our intention to raise awareness of the impact of the SDH on depression in men with physical disabilities and encourage clinicians and policy makers to address the social domain as they seek to improve mental health in this population.
