Syndactyly is a common congenital condition that can present sporadically or in relation to an underlying genetic condition. Little contemporary published data exists detailing specific rates of presentation and surgical intervention, especially in Western European population. This is the first published review of operative intervention rates for the condition over time in Northern Ireland.

A ten-year retrospective review of electronic operative records from January 2007 - October 2017 was carried out within Northern Ireland's regional tertiary centre Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children (RBHSC). All congenital hand surgery in the country was performed here during the period reviewed, by a single surgeon. Patient age at surgical intervention, their sex, digits involved and clinical grade of syndactyly was recorded.

This case review adds epidemiological data on the operative incidence of syndactyly cases in Northern Ireland - a relatively isolated genetic population. Overall rates of incidence have increased over the past 10 years. It remains unclear if this is due to new environmental influences on the developing population or increased referral for surgical intervention over time.Levels of evidence - IV (Case Series).This study investigates the influence of climate variables (pressure, relative humidity, temperature and wind speed) in inducing risk due to COVID 19 at rural, urban and total (rural and urban) population scale in 623 pandemic affected districts of India incorporating the socioeconomic vulnerability factors. We employed nonstationary extreme value analysis to model the different quantiles of cumulative COVID 19 cases in the districts by using climatic factors as covariates. Wind speed was the most dominating climatic factor followed by relative humidity, pressure, and temperature in the evolution of the cases. The results reveal that stationarity, i.e., the COVID 19 cases which are independent of pressure, relative humidity, temperature and wind speed, existed only in 148 (23.7%) out of 623 districts. Whereas, strong nonstationarity, i.e., climate dependence, was detected in the cases of 474 (76.08%) districts. 334 (53.6%), 200 (32.1%) and 336 (53.9%) districts out of 623 districts were at high risk (or above) at rural, urban and total population scales respectively. 19 out of 35 states were observed to be under high (or above) Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa and Delhi being the most risked ones. The study provides high-risk maps of COVID 19 pandemic at the district level and is aimed at supporting the decision-makers to identify climatic and socioeconomic factors in augmenting the risks.How is China viewed by citizens of other countries? Because of the contemporary relevance of protest behaviour, we frame our discussion within this context. For social scientists considering the utilisation of these new databases, it is essential that crowd numbers be linked to underlying human behaviour in a way that promises a chain of connections to investigate and explore. We use behavioural economics to show why relative crowd size may be important for human decision-makers. And we show how the significance of relative crowd size relates to other aspects of the human decision-making process, including risk preferences and probability assessments. Far from being a theory of protest behaviour, we present a behavioural economics-based primer for empirical researchers and social scientists engaging with newly available crowd counting data. The conclusions may apply in other contexts and might be extended to encompass specific types of behaviour, including aggression and violence. Indeed, the conclusions may guide the analysis of the emergence of the crowd counting organisations themselves.
