For sentence comprehension, at the critical word whose meaning is congruent/incongruent with the gesture prime, frontal gestures elicited an N400 effect for gesture-sentence incongruency. More importantly, this incongruency effect was significantly reduced for lateral gestures. These findings suggest that body orientation plays an important role in gesture perception, and that its inferred social-communicative intention may influence gesture-language interaction at semantic level. The outer membrane (OM) is an essential component of the Gram-negative bacterial envelope that protects the cells against external threats. To maintain a functional OM, cells require distinct mechanisms to ensure balance of proteins and lipids in the membrane. Mutations in OM biogenesis and/or homeostasis pathways often result in permeability defects, but how molecular changes in the OM affect barrier function is unclear. Here, we seek potential mechanism(s) that can alleviate permeability defects in Escherichia coli cells lacking the Tol-Pal complex, which accumulate excess PLs in the OM. We identify mutations in enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) biosynthesis that re-establish OM barrier function against large hydrophilic molecules, yet did not restore lipid homeostasis. Furthermore, we demonstrate that build-up of biosynthetic intermediates, but not loss of ECA itself, contributes to the rescue. This suppression of OM phenotypes is unrelated to known effects that accumulation of ECA intermediates have on the cell wall. Finally, we reveal that an unusual diacylglycerol pyrophosphoryl-linked lipid species also accumulates in ECA mutants, and might play a role in the rescue phenotype. Our work provides insights into how OM barrier function can be restored independent of lipid homeostasis, and highlights previously unappreciated effects of ECA-related species in OM biology.
Adolescent drinking and cannabis use in Norway declined in the 2000s, and we tested the assumption that psychosocial problems were more strongly related to substance use when the prevalence was quite low (2012/2013) than when it was considerably higher (2002).
Data stemmed from school surveys of almost 20 000 students aged 14-17 years in 2002 and 2012/2013 in the four largest cities in Norway. We assessed how various deviant behaviours and depressive mood were related to past-year measures on any alcohol intoxication, frequent intoxication (6+ times) and any cannabis use, and tested whether the associations varied significantly by survey year.
The prevalence of any intoxication episodes dropped markedly from 2002 (50%) to 2012/2013 (28%), as did the prevalence of frequent intoxication (29% vs. 10%) and any cannabis use (15% vs. 7%). Deviant behaviours and depressive mood were either more closely related to the drinking outcomes in 2012/2013 than in 2002, or the associations showed no temporal change. None of the associations with cannabis use varied significantly by survey year.
The assumption that psychosocial problems correlated more strongly with alcohol and cannabis use in a low-prevalence period (2012/2013) as compared to a high-prevalence period (2002) was partly supported, but only with respect to drinking. The strength of the associations with cannabis use was stable, which may reflect that the proportion reporting any use of the drug was low even in the relatively 'high-prevalence' period.

A variety of methods have been developed to combat marine oil spills. However, none of these methods is ideal and universal for tackling different kinds of oil spills. In addition, most of these methods do not offer the possibility for recovering the spilt oil. There is great interest in developing novel and better methods for combating marine oil spills that allow recovery of the spilt oil. The use of low molecular weight organogelators that can selectively congeal oil from oil-water mixtures have been proposed to be useful for oil spill recovery. From this initial proposal, the area has progressed gradually towards their practical implementation. see more The advancements and novel concepts in this area are reviewed.
For individuals with cancer, palliative care improves quality of life, mood, and survival. Rural residents experience limited access to palliative care. In eastern North Carolina, a rural area, little is known about access to inpatient cancer-related palliative care. This study describes access to inpatient palliative care and developed a predictive model of who was most likely to be admitted to an inpatient facility without a palliative care provider.
A descriptive, exploratory design was used to examine demographics, clinical variables, and inpatient admissions from 2017 and 2018, in a major regional teaching hospital system that included 8 hospitals (7 rural hospitals). Descriptive statistics and a binary logistic regression were used to analyze data.
The mean age was 62.2 years (N = 2,161, range 18-88, SD = 15.52) 49.4% were female, 54% lived in a rural county, and 44.4% were black. The outlying rural hospitals, with no palliative care providers on staff, had 388 admissions (18%). Only gender (P = .0128), county (P < .0001), and age (P < .05) contributed to the logistic model. The predicted probability of being admitted to an inpatient facility with a palliative care provider is higher for younger males living in urban counties. That probability decreases with age regardless of the gender or type of county.
These findings highlight the limited availability of inpatient palliative care for those with cancer. Women, older adults, and rural residents are more likely to be admitted to 1 of the 7 rural hospitals with no palliative care provider on staff.
