Atmospheric semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are complex in their chemical and toxicological characteristics with sources from both primary combustion emissions and secondary oxygenated aerosol formation processes. In this study, thermal desorption of PM2.5 in association with online measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was carried out to study the role of SVOCs in its gas-particle partitioning. The mass concentrations of PM2.5, black carbon (BC) and p-PAHs downstream of a thermodenuder were measured online at different temperature settings (25, 50, 100, and 200 °C) to characterize PM physico-chemical properties. While the mass concentrations of PM2.5 and p-PAHs reduced to ∼34% at 200 °C compared to that in ambient temperature, BC mass concentration has decreased by 30% at the highest temperature. Furthermore, the submicron particle size distribution showed reduced particle number concentration in Aitken mode at 200 °C heating. The ROS, measured by Particle-into-Nitroxide-Quencher, also showed reduction and followed a similar trend with PM measurements, where the total ROS decreased by 12%, 31%, and 53% at 50 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C, respectively, compared to the ambient sample. When a HEPA filter was included in the upstream of samples, 39% of gas phase ROS reduction was observed at 200 °C. This provided a good estimate of the contribution of SVOCs in ROS production in PM2.5, where decreased SVOCs concentration at 200 °C increased the percentage of particle surface area. This concludes that the surface chemistry of these organic coatings on the particles is important for assessing the health impacts of PM.The spatial distributions, possible sources of C9-C17 chlorinated paraffins (CPs), and the ecological risks posed in mangrove sediment in Dongzhai Harbor (Hainan Island, China) were investigated. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography combined with electron capture negative ionization mass spectrometry was used to determine 50 C9-C17 CP congener groups. The concentrations of C9-CPs, short-chain CPs (SCCPs), and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) in the mangrove sediment samples were 8.28-79.7, 89.2-931, and 58.8-834 ng g-1 dry weight, respectively. The CPs concentrations in the mangrove sediment samples were moderate compared with those found in other regions worldwide. The spatial distributions and congener patterns of the CPs indicated that the CP concentrations were mainly controlled by local emissions and that wastewater discharged from livestock and shrimp breeding facilities and domestic sewage were the main sources of CPs in mangrove sediment in Dongzhai Harbor. C10Cl6-7 and C14Cl7-8 were the dominant SCCP and MCCP congener groups, respectively. The MCCP concentrations and total organic carbon contents significantly correlated (R2 = 0.607, P less then 0.05). Hierarchical cluster analysis and principal component analysis indicated that the SCCP and MCCP congeners were from different commercial CP formulations and sources. SEL120-34A mw Risk assessments suggested that SCCPs and MCCPs in mangrove sediment in Dongzhai Harbor do not currently pose marked risks to sediment-dwelling organisms.Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an emerging organic pollutant (EOP) hazardous to human health. Effects of maternal PFOA exposure on offspring as well as the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, ICR mouse models of gestational low PFOA exposure (0.05 mg/kg/day) were established to investigate the roles on metabolic disorders of offspring. Body weight, body composition, hepatic lipid levels, transcriptome and metabolome were analyzed. Expression of genes related to lipid metabolism, inflammasome formation and gut barrier integrity were measured. Furthermore, oral administration of chlorogenic acid (CGA) (100 mg/kg/day) was performed to observe the rescue effect on lipid disorders caused by PFOA exposure. Our findings demonstrated that gestational exposure to PFOA resulted in obesity, hepatic inflammation, disorders of lipid metabolism, and disruption of gut barrier integrity in male offspring. Notably, these adverse effects were attenuated by CGA supplementation. These data suggested that PFOA exposure during early life stage induced potential risks for later onset of obesity and metabolic disorder which could be ameliorated by CGA treatment.Seafood is the main source of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure for humans and elevated total mercury (Hg) concentrations have been reported in marine fish from Norwegian fjords compared with offshore areas. Hg in tusk fillets (n = 201) and liver samples (n = 177) were measured in individuals from different habitats including offshore, coastal area, outer and inner Sognefjord. Specifically, the effects of habitat, energy sources and trophic complexity on Hg bioaccumulation pathways in tusk (Brosme brosme) were investigated using stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N). The concentrations of Hg in tusk increased from offshore towards inner Sognefjord. While Hg concentrations in sediment were at background levels, tusk fillet samples from 7 of 8 sites in Sognefjord had higher Hg levels than the maximum level set by European Union. Based on these findings, human consumption advice for tusk from Sognefjord was issued by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. δ13C values in tusk successfully discriminated individuals from different habitats and were positively correlated to Hg concentrations in tusk across individuals, sites and habitats, outlining the potential importance of terrestrial carbon and most likely the atmospheric deposition of Hg from the catchment to the overall Hg bioaccumulation and exposure regime in tusk. Additionally, we postulate that the effects of terrestrial carbon sources increased towards inner Sognefjord and likely influenced Hg bioavailability throughout the food web. In contrast, δ15N values were patchy throughout the fjord system and although trophic position explained some of the Hg variation between individual fish, it was not correlated with Hg variation across sites and habitats. Our results suggest that tusk can accumulate high levels of Hg in fjord ecosystems and that catchment runoff is likely an important driver of Hg bioaccumulation in this species.
