The anxiety piqued by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has motivated health planners to consider all options in attempting to ensure the delivery of effective health care. The response to the early stage of the pandemic offered both opportunity and hope for the removal of historic barriers to the effective utilisation of nurse practitioner (NP) services in Australia. This column discusses the utilisation of NP services to improve access to care during the COVID-19 pandemic, and highlights the failures to optimise their impact. The intent of introducing the NP role into Australia 20 years ago was to enhance the flexibility of the workforce by expanding and increasing access to health services, particularly for underserved populations. Since implementation, NP services have been plagued by resistance from the medical profession in Australia and constrained by policy and legislation.Historically, there has been inadequate recognition of the need for persons with disabilities to have the opportunity for meaningful sexual expression. The first such trial was authorised in England in February 2021. Although vaccines are now available for COVID-19, there remain multiple deficits in knowledge in respect of treatment and prevention of the infection and a powerful impetus for solutions given the level of its global morbidity and mortality. Thus, there are potent incentives for unorthodox acceleration of medical knowledge but against these must be balanced ethical and pragmatic considerations. This editorial adds to the literature on such issues by reflecting on the ethical principles that are applicable and identifying the arguments that have been mustered for and against human challenge studies in relation to COVID-19. It argues that, given the limited state of knowledge about the diverse and longer term risks from contraction of COVID-19, considerable care needs to be devoted to any assessment of the appropriateness of human challenge trials to test treatments for the disease or measures to prevent contracting the virus.
Frequency domain diffuse optical spectroscopy (FD-DOS) uses intensity modulated light to measure the absorption and reduced scattering coefficients of turbid media such as biological tissue. Some FD-DOS instruments utilize a single modulation frequency, whereas others use hundreds of frequencies. The effect of modulation frequency choice and measurement bandwidth on optical property (OP) extraction accuracy has not yet been fully characterized.
We aim to assess the effect of modulation frequency selection on OP extraction error and develop a high-speed look-up table (LUT) approach for OP estimation.
We first used noise-free simulations of light transport in homogeneous media to determine optimized iterative inversion model parameters and developed a new multi-frequency LUT method to increase the speed of inversion. We then used experimentally derived noise models for two FD-DOS instruments to generate realistic simulated data for a broad range of OPs and modulation frequencies to test OP extraction accudback.
Fourier ptychography (FP) is a computational imaging approach that achieves high-resolution reconstruction. Inspired by neural networks, many deep-learning-based methods are proposed to solve FP problems. However, the performance of FP still suffers from optical aberration, which needs to be considered.
We present a neural network model for FP reconstructions that can make proper estimation toward aberration and achieve artifact-free reconstruction.
Inspired by the iterative reconstruction of FP, we design a neural network model that mimics the forward imaging process of FP via TensorFlow. The sample and aberration are considered as learnable weights and optimized through back-propagation. Especially, we employ the Zernike terms instead of aberration to decrease the optimization freedom of pupil recovery and perform a high-accuracy estimation. Owing to the auto-differentiation capabilities of the neural network, we additionally utilize total variation regularization to improve the visual quality.
We validate the performance of the reported method via both simulation and experiment. Our method exhibits higher robustness against sophisticated optical aberrations and achieves better image quality by reducing artifacts.
The forward neural network model can jointly recover the high-resolution sample and optical aberration in iterative FP reconstruction. We hope our method that can provide a neural-network perspective to solve iterative-based coherent or incoherent imaging problems.

Puerarin demonstrates a protective effect in many cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of puerarin in acute myocardial infarction (AMI)-induced injury and the exact molecular mechanisms are not fully understood.
To investigate whether puerarin pretreatment improves cardiac function and to study the mechanism of action of puerarin.
Thirty rats were grouped into sham group, AMI group and AMI+puerarin (PUE) group at random (n = 10 per group). Except for the sham group, a model of AMI was established via left anterior descending artery ligation. The PUE group received puerarin 120 mg/(kg × day) for 7 days before the operation. Echocardiography was used for evaluation of cardiac function in rats and TUNEL staining for measuring myocardial apoptosis. The expression levels of p-PI3K, t-Akt, p-Akt, Bax, Bcl-2, and cleaved caspase-3 proteins were measured with western blot.
Compared to the sham group, the AMI group demonstrated poor cardiac function and decreased p-PI3K, p-Akt and Bcl-2 proteins levels, while Bax, cleaved caspase-3, and myocardial apoptosis levels increased.
