Herein, we demonstrate a vanadium-catalyzed cleavage of a lignin model compound (2,6-dimethoxyphenol). The impact of the catalyst in the context of the temperature, reaction time, and the solvent, was examined for the cleavage of the methyl ethers in 2,6-dimethoxyphenol. In contrast to traditional catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis, which requires high pressure hydrogen gas or reductive organic molecules, such as an alcohol and formic acid, the vanadium catalyst demonstrates superior catalytic activity on the cleavage of the C-O bonds using water as a solvent. For example, the conversion of 2,6-dimethoxyphenol is 89.5% at 280°C after 48 h using distilled water. Notably, the vanadium-catalyzed cleavage of the C-O bond linkage in 2,6-dimethoxyphenol affords 3-methoxycatechol, which undergoes further cleavage to afford pyrogallol. This work is expected to provide an alternative method for the hydrogenolysis of lignin and related compounds into valuable chemicals in the absence of external hydrogen and organic solvents. The co-adsorption of sulfate, bisulfate and hydrogen on Pt(111) and Au(111) electrodes was studied based on periodic density functional calculations with the aqueous electrolyte represented by both explicit and implicit solvent models. The influence of the electrochemical control parameters such as the electrode potential and pH was taken into account in a grand-canonical approach. Thus, phase diagrams of the stable coadsorption phases as a function of the electrochemical potential and Pourbaix diagrams have been derived which well reproduce experimental findings. We demonstrate that it is necessary to include explicit water molecules in order to determine the stable adsorbate phases as the (bi)sulfate adsorbates rows become significantly stabilized by bridging water molecules. The photochemistry and photostability of a potential ultraviolet (UV) radiation filter, dehydrodiethylsinapate, with a broad absorption in the UVA region, is explored utilizing a combination of femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy and steady-state irradiation studies. The time-resolved measurements show that this UV filter candidate undergoes excited state relaxation after UV absorption on a timescale of ~10 picoseconds, suggesting efficient relaxation. However, steady-state irradiation measurements show degradation under prolonged UV exposure. From a photochemical standpoint, this highlights the importance of considering both the ultrafast and "ultraslow" timescales when designing new potential UV filters.[This corrects the article DOI 10.3389/fchem.2020.00330.].A highly efficient metal-free oxidative direct C(sp3)-H functionalization of N-acyl/sulfonyl 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) with a wide range of electron-rich nucleophiles was accomplished under mild conditions through oxidation with DDQ and subsequent trapping of the resulting reactive and stable N-acyl/sulfonyl iminium ions. The synthetic utility of this method was illustrated by a concise and efficient total synthesis of (±)-benzo[a]quinolizidine (10) in 3 steps from the known N-Cbz 1,2,3,4-THIQ 4b.Arylnaphthalene lignan lactones belong to a class of natural lignans, and more than 60 analogs have been isolated. Their pharmacological activities as well as unique structural features have attracted considerable attention from medicinal and synthetic chemists. Since the first synthesis in 1895, many synthetic methodologies with ionic or pericyclic reaction mechanisms have been reported. TGF-beta assay Transition metal catalysts sometimes provide exceptional synthetic versatility for the syntheses of natural compounds. Recently, transition metal-mediated methodologies were investigated for the construction of basic scaffolds of arylnaphthalene lignan lactones. Five kinds of transition metal catalysts containing gold, manganese, nickel, palladium, and silver have been explored. Most of the metal catalysts successfully created arylnaphthalene lactones by intermolecular or intramolecular annulative cyclization. In this review, all reports of transition metal-mediated annulative construction of arylnaphthalene lignan lactones were compiled, and synthetic approaches, mechanistic aspects, and successful applications were discussed.Bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are important bio-medical structures, playing a major role in the interaction with human immune systems. Their core regions, containing multiple units of l-glycero-d-manno heptoses (l,d-heptose), are highly conserved structurally (with O3 and O7 glycosidic bonds), making them an epitope of high interest for the potential development of new antibiotics and vaccines. Research in this field has always been restricted by the limited availability of the parent l,d-heptose as well as its biochemical epimeric precursor d-glycero-d-manno heptose (d,d-heptose). This problem of availability has recently been solved by us, through a rapid and efficient practical synthesis of l,d-manno-heptose peracetate demonstrated at scale. Herein we report an optimized, technically simple and versatile synthetic strategy for the differentiation of both the l-glycero and d-glycero-d-manno heptose scaffolds. Our approach is based on an orthoester methodology for the differentiation of all three positions of the sugar core using a O6, O7-tetraisopropyl disiloxyl (TIPDS) protecting group for the exocyclic positions. Furthermore, the regioselective opening toward 7-OH acceptors (6O-FTIPDS ethers) differentiates the exocyclic diol which has been demonstrated with a broader set of substrates and for both manno-heptoses for the first time. The increasing number of synthetic molecules constantly introduced into the illicit drug market poses a great demand in terms of separation and identification power of the analytical tools. Therefore, forensic laboratories are challenged to develop multiple analytical techniques, allowing for the reliable analysis of illicit drugs. This goal is accomplished by means of spectroscopy measurements, usually after a separation step, consisting of liquid (LC) or gas (GC) chromatography. Within the wide range of hyphenated techniques, the coupling of GC to Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) provides a powerful identification tool, also allowing discriminating between isobars and isomers. In this research, the effectiveness of GC-FTIR is demonstrated, in achieving structure elucidation of 1-pentyl-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole, commonly known as JWH-018, a synthetic cannabinoid identified as component of illegal "incense blends." Moreover, solid deposition FTIR enabled for boosting the sensitivity of the technique, over conventional flow (light pipe) cells, scaling down the limit of identification to the ng scale.
