Breeding progress of resistance to fungal wheat diseases and impact of disease severity on yield reduction in long-term variety trials under natural infection were estimated by mixed linear regression models. This study aimed at quantifying breeding progress achieved in resistance breeding towards varieties with higher yield and lower susceptibility for 6 major diseases, as well as estimating decreasing yields and increasing disease susceptibility of varieties due to ageing effects during the period 1983-2019. A further aim was the prediction of disease-related yield reductions during 2005-2019 by mixed linear regression models using disease severity scores as covariates. For yield and all diseases, overall progress of the fully treated intensity (I2) was considerably higher than for the intensity without fungicides and growth regulators (I1). The disease severity level was considerably reduced during the study period for mildew (MLD), tan spot (DTR) and Septoria nodorum blotch (ear) (SNB) and to a lesser ecreased susceptibility of varieties strongly for BNR and MLD, but were comparatively weak for SNB and DTR. Considerable yield reductions under high disease severity were predicted for STB (-6.6%), BNR (-6.5%) and yellow rust (YLR, -5.8%), but lower reductions for the other diseases. The reduction for resistant vs. highly susceptible varieties under high severity conditions was about halved for BNR and YLR, providing evidence of resistance breeding progress. The empirical evidence on the functional relations between disease severity, variety susceptibility and yield reductions based on a large-scale multiple-disease field trial data set in German winter wheat is an important contribution to the ongoing discussion on fungicide use and its environmental impact.
A novel QTL, qCIR9.1, that controls callus induction rate in anther culture was identified on chromosome 9 in rice, and based on RNA-seq data, Os09g0551600 was the most promising candidate gene. Anther culture, a doubled haploid (DH) technique, has become an important technology in many plant-breeding programmes. Although anther culturability is the key factor in this technique, its genetic mechanisms in rice remain poorly understood. AMI-1 manufacturer In this study, we mapped quantitative trait loci (QTLs) responsible for anther culturability by using 192 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from YZX (Oryza sativa ssp. indica) × 02428 (Oryza sativa ssp. japonica) and a high-density bin map. A total of eight QTLs for anther culturability were detected in three environments. Among these QTLs, a novel major QTL for callus induction rate (CIR) named qCIR9.1 was repeatedly mapped to a ~ 100kb genomic interval on chromosome 9 and explained 8.39-14.14% of the phenotypic variation. Additionally, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was perfh between the parents and between the bulked RILs after 26 days of culture was drastically reduced to only 78. Among these DEGs, only one gene, Os09g0551600, encoding a high-mobility group (HMG) protein, was located in the candidate region of qCIR9.1. qRT-PCR analysis of Os09g0551600 showed the same results as RNA-seq, and the expression of this gene was decreased in the low-callus-induction parent (YZX) and L-Pool. Our results provide a foundational step for further cloning of qCIR9.1 and will be very useful for improving anther culturability in rice.
This study aimed to explore the early associations between the experienced psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis during lockdown, depressive symptomatology, anxiety/stress levels, and disordered eating behaviors in adults during a first COVID-19 lockdown period.
This was acommunity-basedcross-sectional studyassessing 254 Portuguese adults (82.7% women; 35.82 ± 11.82years) 1 week after the end of the first mandatory COVID-19 lockdown in Portugal. An online survey was conducted to evaluate psychological distress, disordered eating, and psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pearson correlations and Structural Equation Modeling were performed.
Participants reported the presence of meal skipping (52.8%), grazing eating behavior (80.9%), overeating (81.0%), loss of control over eating (47.2%), and binge eating episodes (39.2%) during lockdown. Structural equation modeling analyses, controlling for age and sex, indicated that there was a significant indirect effect of the experienced psychosocial impact of COVID-19 pandemic on disordered eating behaviors mediated through psychological distress.
