A key innovation allowing for bats to conquer the skies was a forelimb modified into a flexible wing. The wing bones of bats are exceptionally long and dynamically bend with wingbeats. Bone microarchitectural features supporting these novel performance attributes are still largely unknown. The humeri and femora of bats are typically avascular, except for large-bodied taxa (e.g., pteropodid flying foxes). No thorough investigation of vascular canal regionalization and morphology has been undertaken as historically it has been difficult to reconstruct the 3D architecture of these canals. This study augments our understanding of the vascular networks supporting the bone matrix of a sample of bats (n = 24) of variable body mass, representing three families (Pteropodidae [large-bodied, species = 6], Phyllostomidae [medium-bodied, species = 2], and Molossidae [medium-bodied, species = 1]). We employed Synchrotron Radiation-based micro-Computed Tomography (SRμCT) to allow for a detailed comparison of canal morphology within humeri and femora. Results indicate that across selected bats, canal number per unit volume is similar independent of body size. Differences in canal morphometry based on body size and bone type appear primarily related to a broader distribution of the canal network as cortical volume increases. Heavier bats display a relatively rich vascular network of mostly longitudinally-oriented canals that are localized mainly to the mid-cortical and endosteal bone envelopes. Taken together, our results suggest that relative vascularity of the limb bones of heavier bats forms support for nutrient exchange in a regional pattern.Microparticles (MPs) are heterogeneous populations of cell-derived vesicles that play an important role in intercellular communications. The release of MPs by tumor cells is a very common event in tumor microenvironments (TMEs). Tumor cell-derived MPs (T-MPs) contain a variety of bioactive molecules, thus modulating various biological processes, including the regulation of immune cell phenotype and function, as well as immune responses. Moreover, T-MPs can be used as natural carriers to deliver therapeutic drugs into tumor cells and immune cells, thus remodeling TMEs and modifying anti-tumor immune responses. These features allow T-MPs to function as potential biomaterials to be applied in tumor immunotherapies and vaccines. This article describes protocols for the isolation of T-MPs from supernatants of cultured tumor cells by multi-step centrifugations. As a yeast divergent from the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, S. pombe shares more common features with humans including gene structures, chromatin dynamics, and the prevalence of introns, as well as the control of gene expression through pre-mRNA splicing, epigenetic gene silencing, and RNAi pathways. With the advent of new methodologies for research, S. pombe has become an increasingly used model to investigate various molecular and cellular processes over the last 50 years. Also, S. pombe serves as an excellent system for undergraduate students to obtain hands-on research experience. Versatile experimental approaches are amenable using the fission yeast system due to its relative ease of maintenance, its inherent cellular properties, its power in classic and molecular genetics, and its feasibility in genomics and proteomics analyses. This article provides an overview of S. pombe's rise as a valuable model organism and presents examples to highlight the significance of S. pombe as a unicellular "micromammal" in investigating biological questions. We especially focus on the advantages of and the advancements in using fission yeast for studying biological processes that are characteristic of metazoans to decipher the underlining molecular mechanisms fundamental to all eukaryotes. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.
Epilepsy is a major neurological disorder that requires long-term medical treatment. Once epilepsy is diagnosed, people with epilepsy face many difficulties in accessing treatment (treatment gap). Our objective was to assess the situation regarding the availability, price, affordability, and quality of anti-seizure medication (ASM), which are major determinants of access to treatment.

A cross-sectional study was performed in provincial/district hospitals and private pharmacies in urban and rural areas in Cambodia. Data on ASM availability and price were obtained through drug suppliers. Affordability was estimated as the number of day wages the lowest-paid government employee must work to purchase a monthly treatment. Samples of ASM were collected, and the quality of ASM was assessed through Medicine Quality Assessment Reporting Guidelines.

Out of 138 outlets visited, only 72 outlets (52.2% [95% CI 43.5-60.7]) had at least one ASM available. Phenobarbital 100mg was the most available (35.5%), followed by carbamazepine 200mg (21.
