The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to increased demand nationwide for dialysis equipment, including supplies and machines. To meet the demand in our institution, our surge plan included rapid mobilization of a novel continuous renal replacement treatment (CRRT) machine named SAMI. The SAMI is a push-pull filtration enhanced dialysis machine that can conjugate extremely high single-pass solute removal efficiency with very precise fluid balance control.
Machine assembly was conducted on-site by local biomedical engineers with remote assistance by the vendor. One 3-h virtual training session of 3 dialysis nurses was conducted before SAMI deployment. The SAMI was deployed in prolonged intermittent replacement therapy (PIRRT) mode to maximize patients covered per machine per day. Live on-demand vendor support was provided to troubleshoot any issues for the first few cases. After 4 weeks of the SAMI implementation, data on treatments with the SAMI were collected, and a questionnaire was providtricted during states of emergency. The successful deployment of the SAMI in our institution during the pandemic with only 3-h virtual training supports that operating the SAMI is simple and safe.
Thymic carcinoma metastases of the spinal column are very rare, especially in pediatric patients. To our knowledge, this is the first such pediatric case in the literature.
We report the case of a 14-year-old male patient with T12 and L1 metastases of thymic carcinoma. He had history of thymectomy and intrathoracic tumor resection 7 months previously. learn more The patient's neurological condition deteriorated; therefore, tumor resection and decompression of the spinal canal were performed. He underwent instrumentation and fusion procedures to prevent spinal instability.
The main purpose of the treatment is gross total resection of the thymic carcinoma. However, adjuvant methods such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy should be added to the treatment protocol in patients who have higher stage diseases or those in whom total tumor resection cannot be achieved.

To provide input data for improved intrafractional and interfractional adaptive radiotherapy, the 4D anatomy has to be inferred from data with lower dimensionality. The purpose of this study was to experimentally validate a previously proposed propagation method that provides continuous time-resolved estimated 4D-MRI based on orthogonal cine MRI for a low-field MR-Linac. Ex vivo porcine lungs were injected with artificial nodules and mounted in a dedicated phantom that allows for the simulation of periodic and reproducible breathing motion. The phantom was scanned with a research version of a commercial 0.35 T MR-Linac. Respiratory-correlated 4D-MRI were reconstructed and served as ground truth images. Series of interleaved orthogonal slices in sagittal and coronal orientation, intersecting the injected targets, wld provide valuable information for treatment planning, real-time motion monitoring, treatment adaptation, and post-treatment evaluation of MR-guided radiotherapy treatments. With a rapid advancement of nanotechnology and the close integration of disciplines, research on nanozymes (nanomaterials with enzyme-like activities), is becoming an expeditiously developing field. In recent years, platinum group element-based (Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, Ir, and Os) nanozymes developed successively, have not only promoted the research of nanozymes but also expanded the biomedical applications of nanomaterials. Generally speaking, platinum group element-based nanozymes process high catalytic efficiency, specific surface area, stability, and other physical/chemical properties, which benefit for their applications in biosensing, biological medicine, biomedical imaging, and environmental protection. This paper will introduce the research progress of platinum group element-based nanozymes including their synthesis, characterization, enzyme-like activities, stability, biocompatibility, toxicity, and applications for biological detection and clinical relevance. Our emphasis is put on unfolding the roles of platinum group element-based nanozymes in biomedical applications and how they overcome the limitations. Last but not least, trends and future perspectives of platinum group element-based nanozymes in biomedical applications are also provided.Using the technique of double high-speed photography, we find that a femtosecond laser pulse is able to change the velocity of a moving domain wall in an yttrium iron garnet. The change depends on the light intensity and the domain wall velocity itself. To explain the results we propose a model in which the domain wall velocity is controlled by photo-induced generation of vertical Bloch lines. In this study, the composite of Prussian blue-carboxylated MWCNTs/ZIF-67 (PB-MWCNTs-COOH/ZIF-67) was synthesized and used as modified electrode material to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for the determination of paracetamol (PAR). In this sensor system, negatively charged MWCNTs-COOH as support for the immobilization of positively charged PB can effectively avoid the agglomeration of PB and enhance the stability, conductivity and catalytic activity of the composite. ZIF-67 particles coating outside PB-MWCNTs-COOH promotes the concentration of PAR. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the PB-MWCNTs-COOH/ZIF-67 based sensor exhibits significantly improved electrochemical sensing behavior toward the oxidation of PAR. Under the optimum conditions, the PAR sensor presents wide linear ranges of 0.01-70 μM with a low limit of detection of 3.3 nM (S/N = 3). The method also possesses long-term stability, good reproducibility and selectivity, and was employed to the determination of PAR contents in PAR tablets sample.
