Psychiatric problems, such as stress and anxiety disorders, are encountered amongst healthcare professionals fighting epidemics. Considering that COVID-19 suddenly became a pandemic and healthcare professionals have not had access to sufficient information, it is a fact that healthcare professionals have been affected on a large scale. Heavy workloads, insufficient equipment and anxiety over families increase this impact. We aimed to investigate the extent to which healthcare professionals have been psychologically affected by COVID-19 and related factors.
Data obtained through questionnaires completed by 348 healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic and 350 participants who are in the control group were investigated. The Impact of Event Scale-revised (IES-R) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the Severity Index (ISI) for insomnia were used. Differences regarding gender, occupation, age group, marital status and sub-groups were statistically analysed.

The WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring (PIDM) is a large Pharmacovigilance network of countries sharing Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reports. Pharmacovigilance Experts have suggested that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an overlooked adverse event. We undertook this study to investigate the potential role of Pharmacovigilance databases in the surveillance of AMR.
Using the AWaRe (Access, Watch and Reserve) list and the WHO Priority Pathogens List, we established a list of antimicrobials and carried out a VigiBase search via VigiAccess, looking for ADR reports with Preferred Terms (PTs) that contained AMR-relevant information. Identified Terms were matched with codes from the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA Version 21.1).
Records on 86 drugs were retrieved with a total of 1 170 751 ADR reports submitted between 1968 and 2018. Seventeen PTs suggesting suspected resistance, ineffectiveness, inappropriate use, or medication error were used to code 15 250 reports. The most tool in tracking antimicrobial use and resistance especially in settings where laboratory capacity is still in its development stages. National Pharmacovigilance centers could play a proactive role in stimulating the reporting of AMR-relevant ADRs which can serve as a basis for resistance suspicion alerts. Further studies focusing on the narrative and other clinical pharmacology details in ADR reports are required.Ethylene is a volatile hydrocarbon with a massive global market in the plastic industry. The ethylene now used for commercial applications is produced exclusively from nonrenewable petroleum sources, while competitive biotechnological production systems do not yet exist. This review focuses on the currently developed photoautotrophic bioproduction strategies that enable direct solar-driven conversion of CO2 into ethylene, based on the use of genetically engineered photosynthetic cyanobacteria expressing heterologous ethylene forming enzyme (EFE) from Pseudomonas syringae. The emphasis is on the different engineering strategies to express EFE and to direct the cellular carbon flux towards the primary metabolite 2-oxoglutarate, highlighting associated metabolic constraints, and technical considerations on cultivation strategies and conditional parameters. While the research field has progressed towards more robust strains with better production profiles, and deeper understanding of the associated metabolic limitations, it is clear that there is room for significant improvement to reach industrial relevance. At the same time, existing information and the development of synthetic biology tools for engineering cyanobacteria open new possibilities for improving the prospects for the sustainable production of renewable ethylene.Gangliosides are expressed on plasma membranes throughout the body and enriched in the nervous system. A critical role for complex a- and b-series gangliosides in central and peripheral nervous system ageing has been established through transgenic manipulation of enzymes in ganglioside biosynthesis. Disrupting GalNAc-transferase (GalNAc-T), thus eliminating all a- and b-series complex gangliosides (with consequent over-expression of GM3 and GD3) leads to an age-dependent neurodegeneration. Mice that express only GM3 ganglioside (double knockout produced by crossing GalNAc-T-/- and GD3 synthase-/- mice, Dbl KO) display markedly accelerated neurodegeneration with reduced survival. Degenerating axons and disrupted node of Ranvier architecture are key features of complex ganglioside-deficient mice. Previously, we have shown that reintroduction of both a- and b-series gangliosides into neurons on a global GalNAcT-/- background is sufficient to rescue this age-dependent neurodegenerative phenotype. To determine the relative roles of a- and b-series gangliosides in this rescue paradigm, we herein reintroduced GalNAc-T into neurons of Dbl KO mice, thereby reconstituting a-series but not b-series complex gangliosides. We assessed survival, axon degeneration, axo-glial integrity, inflammatory markers and lipid-raft formation in these Rescue mice compared to wild-type and Dbl KO mice. We found that this neuronal reconstitution of a-series complex gangliosides abrogated the adult lethal phenotype in Dbl KO mice, and partially attenuated the neurodegenerative features. This suggests that whilst neuronal expression of a-series gangliosides is critical for survival during ageing, it is not entirely sufficient to restore complete nervous system integrity in the absence of either b-series or glial a-series gangliosides.Misinformation is one of the greatest threats to global health. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common skin disorder with a complex multifactorial aetiology, rendering it susceptible to misinformation. Little is known about the content of misinformation regarding AD online. We performed a review of AD-related misinformation available online, via PubMed for scientific papers and Google for nonscientific websites. Key areas of misinformation were identified, including 'simple cures' for AD, diet, chemicals, dust, vaccines, red skin syndrome and alternative therapies. selleck Patients with AD and their families are vulnerable to misinformation given the severe impact of AD on quality of life. Dermatologists must be aware of the false AD-related content being shared online, and be prepared to refute and rebut misinformation by providing appropriate evidence.
