Nanofiber-based systems designed for diabetes.
One of the most important challenges facing tissue engineering researches is the scaffold design with optimum physical and mechanical properties for growth and proliferation of cells, and tissue formation. The aim of this study was to produce a novel nanocomposite containing β-tricalcium phosphate and layered double hydroxide (β-TCP-LDH) and analyzing the capacity of its osteogenic activity in vitro. In this paper, β-tricalcium phosphate and layered double hydroxide powders were synthesized by co-precipitation processes. Then, the porous nanocomposite granules were prepared by the polyurethane sponge replication method. In this study, four kinds of β-TCP granules containing LDHs nanoparticles (ranging from 0.1 to 10 wt%) have been prepared. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses were selected to study the phase structure, morphology, and phase distribution, respectively. Physicochemical characterizations demonstrated that the granules were synthesized successfully. Interconnected macro pores ranging over 200-500 μm were observed for all kinds of granules. SEM micrographs showed that human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were attached to the surfaces of the granules and proliferated in good shape. The results warranted that the synthesized granules exhibited good biocompatibility and mineralization. Based on the results of compressive strength and porosity tests, the most suitable type of granule is β-TCP/LDH 10 wt% with 77% porosity and compressive modulus of 231.4 MPa, which can be utilized in bone tissue engineering. To our knowledge, layered double hydroxides have not previously been incorporated into tricalcium phosphate granules for bone grafting. click here Also, this study is the first report on the effects of LDH on the mechanical properties and porosity of β-TCP granules. Our results demonstrated that β-TCP/LDH nanocomposite granule has a great potential for bone defects regeneration and tissue engineering applications.Diabetes mellitus, known as diabetes, is a challenging issue, and to control diabetes, a large population is lining toward ayurvedic medicine. In the present study, four brands of anti-diabetic ayurvedic medicines, along with a home remedy, are analyzed using the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopic (LIBS) technique. The study is carried out to know the elements responsible for glycemic potential. The laser-induced breakdown (LIB) spectra elucidate the presence of organic and inorganic elements like Al, Ba, C, Ca, Cu, Fe, H, K, Mg, N, Na, O, Si, Sr, Zn, and the molecular band of CN molecule in medicines. LIBS result also reveals Na and K's distinct concentration, which plays a vital role in diabetes management. The presence of the CN band and organic elements indicate the presence of organic molecular compositions in medicines. For confirmation of organic composition in the drugs, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) has been performed. Principal component analysis (PCA) on the LIBS data of the medicines has been used for instant discrimination based on their elemental/molecular compositions.Fungi are considered to be the most resilient and economically important microbial community that can easily survive and optimally grow under a wide range of growth conditions. Thermophilic fungi from the geothermal sources have been less pondered upon and lie unexplored. Here, a microbiome approach was conducted to understand the concealed world of the environmental mycobiota from the two hot springs of North Sikkim district located in North-east India. The solfataric muds from the hot springs were analyzed. In both the samples, on the basis of genus level classification, genus Fusarium had the highest abundance followed by Colletotrichum, Pochonia, Pyricularia, Neurospora, etc. Analyzing the predicted genes, the functional proteins of New Yume Samdung mycobiome were found to be dominated by the genera Fusarium (22%), Trichoderma (12%), and Aspergillus (11%), whereas in the case of Old Yume Samdung, it was dominated by the genera Aspergillus (11%), Saccharomyces (6%), and Fusarium (5%). Interestingly, in the studied mycobiome, environmental yeasts were also detected. From the functional metagenomics, sulfate adenylatetransferase (SAT) proteins for sulfur assimilation were found in some of the fungal reads. Toxin protein reads such as AM-toxin biosynthesis proteins, AF-toxin biosynthesis proteins, Gliotoxin biosynthesis proteins, and aflatoxin biosynthesis proteins were detected in the mycobiomes.Different approaches to endoscopic thyroidectomy utilize incisions that result in inevitable physical trauma to patients since postoperative tissue fibrosis and scars will influence their quality of life for a lifetime. Over the past few years, most studies have discussed the safety concerns of different kinds of endoscopic thyroidectomy; conversely, there has been less discussion on postoperative quality of life. Because most patients undergoing thyroidectomy for cancer or benign diseases are likely to have long-term survival, it is essential to study the cosmetic outcome of patients' scars from minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT) and bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA) robotic thyroidectomy on quality of life. From July 2015 to December 2017, 95 patients-60 who underwent MIVAT and 35 who underwent BABA robotic thyroidectomy-were retrospectively studied. Patient demographics, operative indications, pathologic findings, pain scores after surgery, complications, perception of scars, and overall satisfaction were compared between the two groups. The cosmetic outcome and overall satisfaction were evaluated at least 2 years after the operation using the patient scar assessment questionnaire and the 36-item short form health survey (SF-36). There was no statistically significant difference in scar perception between the two groups. However, in the SF-36, the MIVAT group had better satisfaction than the BABA robotic group regarding general health, vitality, mental health, and health change. MIVAT and BABA robotic thyroidectomy can be safely performed in selected patients, and patients who underwent MIVAT had better postoperative qualities of life than those who underwent the BABA robotic approach.
