Medication For ADHD and Anxiety
The most common medication for ADHD is stimulants like methylphenidates (Ritalin) and dextroamphetamines (Adderall). These drugs regulate brain chemicals and increase levels of the brain.
adhd sleep medication can trigger side-effects like jitteriness or increased heart rate, which could exacerbate anxiety symptoms. These medications are not usually prescribed to those with both ADHD and anxiety.
Stimulants
The drugs used to treat ADHD may help alleviate anxiety among those suffering from the condition. However, they're not an effective treatment for the disorder, therefore it is essential to continue with therapy sessions or other treatment methods in addition to taking your medication. If you experience severe side effects or disrupt your daily routine, talk with your physician about changing your dosage or trying a different medication.
Amphétamines (Adderall) and methylphenidate are two of the most common medications prescribed by doctors for ADHD. These drugs increase the availability of chemicals in the brain that are involved in paying attention, organizing thoughts and controlling impulses.
However, these medications can cause unwanted side effects, like jitteriness, increased heart rate and nervousness. These symptoms can mimic the symptoms of anxiety or exacerbate an anxiety disorder already present and that's the reason medical professionals typically do not prescribe ADHD stimulant medications like mixed amphetamine salts and atomoxetine to patients with a diagnosed anxiety disorder.
It is important to speak with your doctor regarding any restrictions you may have prior to starting treatment. These medications may also cause adverse reactions when taken with certain foods and beverages. Inform your doctor if you are taking any prescription or supplements, and if you have any health conditions or lifestyle choices that may impact the effectiveness of the medication.
It's not unusual for people to co-occur an anxiety disorder and ADHD. In fact, approximately half of those with ADHD have at least one anxiety disorder that is comorbid. Managing ADHD symptoms may help reduce anxiety. Treating executive function problems related to ADHD can help reduce stress associated with time management and organizational abilities, says Claire Streeter PMHNP, ARNP. She is a psychiatrist and mental health nurse practitioner at Charlie Health Psychiatric Mental Health Services.
The most popular drugs for ADHD are also effective as an anxiety medication like methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine. These drugs work by boosting the levels of norepinephrine as well as dopamine in the brain, which improve concentration and control impulses. These drugs can also lower blood pressure and heart rates and have a calming affect. A majority of doctors prescribe long-acting extended-release formulations of these medications that build up in the bloodstream over a longer period of time. This reduces the fluctuations in symptoms that occur as the medication wears off and helps prevent anxiety from getting worse when the medication is worn off. The medications are also less likely to trigger the "rebound" effect that can cause ADHD and anxiety symptoms worse after they've worn off, explains Streeter.
