What is a Volvo Truck Key?

Ignition Key

The ignition key is the mechanical part that turns the vehicle on. The ignition key also opens the trunk and doors. Certain keys can be used for additional purposes, such as an emergency key trunk release, liftgate release or panic release.

The blade of the key could cause problems. A locksmith that is registered with Volvo can cut new keys for you. They can do this most often without a car.


Some Volvo keys are marked with specific features, such as restricted or red keys. These are controlled by how the car was delivered from the factory. A dealer can order an option to disable the restricted key function. The dealer can do this for you using VIDA. You can also do it yourself, if you own all the software and tools.

The key fobs are red or orange in the color. They can be interchangable between cars, but the special keys will need their shells to be released before they are able to be used in another car. The keys can be reprogrammed by the dealer or yourself. There is no "virginizing" required with Volvo key fobs.

Remote Key

The remote key allows you to open the doors and begin your vehicle. It also allows you to control the locks and activate/deactivate some functions, like panorama roofs or power windows. The key has a restricted function that disables the motion sensing*. You can buy keys with this feature from the dealer (you need proof of ownership) or a Volvo-certified locksmith. A key with this feature is marked orange or red. The key shell release slider matches the color therefore swapping a brand new key blade with an existing one won't affect the functionality.

Programming (adding) a new remote is simple, follow VIDA's instructions. It doesn't need to be an "virgin" key either. Sit in the driver's seat, with the door shut, press lock button on new remote and the side marker light should blink to indicate that the key has been programmed.

Keyless Entry Key

A long-press on the keyless button will close all windows as well as the panoramic roof*. The key is equipped with a button cell battery (warning: button cells are small and can cause injury when swallowed). A Volvo-registered locksmith or dealer can make you keys that are keyless. They can also program your Volvo keys. You can change the shells of the key fob and it will work in a way that is interchangeable.

Key Fob

A key fob is a part of the VOLVO key and has keyless entry function, lock and unlock. It also comes with the panic key that will activate the alarm for your vehicle. The key fob also has the ability to close your windows as well as the panoramic roof*. The key fob is contained inside a plastic shell that matches your car's color and also has silver buttons. you can swap these shells between keys and the function will remain the same.

A dealer can cut the replacement blade you need for your key fob. A locksmith who is registered with Volvo can perform this, but will require proof of ownership. You can also make copies of blank keys using the emergency blade. However, you'll need to program the key through VIDA in order to use it inside your vehicle.
