Effective utilization of cellulose and hemicelluloses is essential to sustainable bioconversion of lignocellulose. A newly isolated xylose-utilizing strain, Klebsiella pneumoniae PM2, was introduced to convert the biomass "whole sugars" into high value 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) in a biorefinery process. The fermentation conditions were optimized (30°C, pH 7, and 150 rpm agitation) using glucose for maximum 2,3-BDO production in batch systems. A sulfite pretreated oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) whole slurry (substrate hydrolysate 119.5 g/L total glucose mixed with pretreatment spent liquor 80 g/L xylose) was fed to strain PM2 for fermentation. The optimized biorefinery process resulted in 75.03 ± 3.17 g/L of 2,3-BDO with 0.78 ± 0.33 g/L/h productivity and 0.43 g/g yield (87% of theoretical value) via a modified staged separate hydrolysis and fermentation process. This result is equivalent to approximately 135 kg 2,3-BDO and 14.5 kg acetoin precursors from 1 ton of EFB biomass without any wastage of both C6 and C5 sugars.Short rotation plantations of willow genotypes, harvested in vegetative growth phases, were tested as an alternative biomass for methane production. The substrate characteristics, maximal methane yields (K) and highest methane production rates (µmax) were determined. Leaves and stems from diploid Energo (EN) and tetraploid (PP) plants, harvested in June were superior methane sources to woody tissue. This could be related to the lower lignin contents in green willow. Fermentation of pooled biomasses from tetraploid genotypes harvested in June-August was more efficient than methane production from diploid tissues. Microbial community analyses by 16S rRNA genes showed a dominance of the order Clostridiales. In field study, based on Energo plantation, the maximum in green biomass accumulation was in early month 9 of the vegetation period. A theoretical calculation showed similar or better energy potential per unit area for willow than in the case of maize silage. This study encourages the use of green willow biomass as feedstock in biomethanation processes due to its relatively low production costs and uncomplicated agricultural practice. This study assessed the selenium (Se) removal efficiency of two pilot-scale high-rate algae ponds (HRAPs) treating domestic wastewater and investigated the production of Se-enriched microalgae as potential feed supplement. The HRAP-Se had an average Se, NH4+-N, total phosphorus and COD removal efficiency of, respectively, 43%, 93%, 77%, and 70%. Inorganic Se taken up by the microalgae was mainly (91%) transformed to selenoamino acids, and 49-63% of Se in the Se-enriched microalgae was bioaccessible for animals. The crude protein content (48%) of the microalgae was higher than that of soybeans, whereas the essential amino acid content was comparable. Selenium may induce the production of the polyunsaturated fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 in microalgae. Overall, the production of Se-enriched microalgae in HRAPs may offer a promising alternative for upgrading low-value resources into high-value feed supplements, supporting the drive to a circular economy. In this work, UV-vis absorption spectrum of the membrane integrity analysis based on slopes of log-transformed absorbance spectra, differential absorbance spectroscopy (DAS), and absorption coefficient α(254) were studied at different number of breakage fibers and filtration times. Moreover, we analyze the influence of Fe2+ and Ca2+concentration on UV spectrum detection results. Cluster analysis and the change ratio Rs were used to determine the dissolved organic matter (DOM) leakage stages. As a result, the correlation coefficient between slope280-350 value and the number of breakage fibers is 0.901. Seven gaussian bands were successfully model from the DAS, and A4 (312 nm), A5 (339 nm), A6 (367 nm) were chosen to indicate the extent of breakage fiber. Peak 4(A4) is minimally affected by ions concentration. The α(254) could be used as a good indicator for detecting industrial wastewater treatment process which correlation coefficient between the number of breakage fibers is 0.955. The DOM leakage process was divided into three stages which were bulk leakage stage, development stage and stabilization stage. The UV-vis absorption spectrum can effectively detect the membrane integrity more sensitive than particle counter and three analyse methods are suitable for different substance in feed water.Biologically activated carbon (BAC) filters are widely used in China and worldwide as an essential part of advanced water treatment. However, it is unclear how to properly select the granular activated carbon (GAC) used in BAC filters and to determine when GAC should be replaced. In this study, five BAC filters, each filled with a different coconut- or coal-based GAC with different physicochemical properties, were run continuously for 400 days. The structure and function of the microbial community and the quantity of specific enzymes in the BAC filters were investigated through an integrated metagenomic/metaproteomic analysis. The results indicated that GAC adsorption still played a major role in removing organic matter once the filters reached a steady-state, which was attributed to bioregeneration, and the contribution of adsorption might be relatively greater than that of biodegradation. GAC with strong adsorption capacity and high bioregeneration potential selected bacterial communities more phylogenetically closely-related than others. The iodine value could be used as an indicator of BAC performance in terms of organic matter removal in the initial stage of the filters, which is dominated by adsorption. (S)-2-Hydroxysuccinic acid nmr However, it could not be used to assess performance at a later stage when adsorption and biodegradation occurred simultaneously. Pore-size distribution characteristics could be chosen as a potential better indicator compared with the current adsorption indicators, dually representing the adsorption performance and the microbial activity, and the proportion of important pore-size of GAC that is more suitable for BAC filter is suggested. GAC with strongly polar terminal groups is more conducive to the removal of ammonium-nitrogen.
