In hearing individuals, vestibular and visuo-spatial functions seem to be functionally linked. Previous studies have suggested that congenitally deaf individuals are at a higher risk for vestibular problems, which in hearing adults have often been found to be associated with impairments in visuo-spatial processing. However, communicating in a sign language provides extensive practice in visuo-spatial processing, which might counteract negative effects of vestibular impairments. Here, we investigated whether the functional link between vestibular and visuo-spatial functions is mandatory, that is whether it is impenetrable to experience or context, or whether it is dependent on specific sensory and cognitive experiences. To this end, we tested a group of congenitally deaf native signers and a group of hearing nonsigners on mental rotation and balance tasks. Compared to hearing nonsigners, mental rotation was superior in the deaf signers in conditions crucial for sign language comprehension. By contrast, the balance performance of the group of deaf signers was impaired. While in the group of hearing nonsigners, balance skills correlated with mental rotation abilities, no such relationship was observed in the group of deaf signers. These results suggest that the link between vestibular and visuo-spatial functions is not fixed but can be altered or even cancelled out by certain sensory or cognitive experiences, such as the acquisition of a sign language.The most common features of Parkinson's disease (PD) are motor impairments, but many patients also present depression and memory impairment. Male Wistar rats received a bilateral infusion of 6 μg/side 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). Short-term memory was evaluated by the social recognition test, and depressive-like behaviors were evaluated by the sucrose preference and forced swimming tests (FST). Drug treatments included vehicle (i.p., once a week); ketamine (5, 10 and 15 mg/kg, i.p., once a week); and imipramine (20 mg/kg, i.p., daily). The treatments were administered 21 days after the SNc lesion and lasted for 28 days. The SNc lesion impaired short-term social memory, and all ketamine doses reversed the memory impairment and anhedonia (reduction of sucrose preference) induced by 6-OHDA. In the FST, 6-OHDA increased immobility, and all doses of ketamine and imipramine reversed this effect. The anti-immobility effect of ketamine was associated with an increase in swimming but not in climbing, suggesting a serotonergic effect. Ketamine and imipramine did not reverse the 6-OHDA-induced reduction in tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemistry in the SNc. In conclusion, ketamine reversed depressive-like behaviors and short-term memory impairment in rats with SNc bilateral lesions, indicating a promising profile for its use in PD patients.This study aims to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of sodium butyrate against the pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced kindling epilepsy. Sodium butyrate (SB) (5, 10 and 20 mg/kg) and sodium valproate for 40 days and PTZ (37 mg/kg) injection every day were conducted for Kunming mice, to investigate seizure intensity and latency, oxidative stress parameters, mitochondrial structure and function, histopathology, and Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 expressions. It is shown that seizure latency was effectively increased and the intensity of seizures decreased by treatment with sodium butyrate. It was also found to reverse the structural disruption of the mitochondria, reduce the ROS level and improve the levels of NAD + and ATP in the brains of epileptic mice. Furthermore, pretreatment with SB led to an increase in antioxidant enzyme activity (CAT, SOD and GSH-PX) in the brain as well as conferred a neuroprotective effect against neuron loss and apoptosis. The activation of Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 signals was also identified, in which the antiepileptic effect of SB may be partially due to its anti-mitochondrial injury and neuroprotective activities. Accordingly, the results of a series of functional tests indicate a significant improvement of neurological function following SB treatment. Further, we have also discussed various mechanisms involved in post-stroke depression (PSD) and strategies for early detection and diagnosis using biomarkers that may revolutionize treatment for the affected population. Towards the end, along with the preclinical scenario, we have also discussed the various treatment approaches like pharmacotherapy, traditional medicines, psychotherapy, electrical stimulation and microRNAs being utilized for effectively managing PSD.
