How to Repair Bifold Door Top Roller Guide
If your bifold door is squeaking, it's likely that they need some attention. They could need to be cleaned or lubricated, or even adjusted. The problem may be caused by loose screws on the top pivot or the top guide roller.
This kit includes everything you need to restore your bi-fold wardrobe door to its optimal performance.
Remove the Door
Installing an internal set of bifold doors may seem like an involved and difficult project but it's actually straightforward for a DIYer with a little experience. Moving the frame isn't a problem but the trick is getting the doors to fold and close easily and accurately. Because bifold doors are intricate machines, they might require some 'tuning' to continue functioning properly. It could be as simple as tightening a screw, or as complicated as removing and replacing the door's pivot pin or roller.
The majority of the time, you can solve these issues by making a few simple adjustments, without having to remove the doors. You may find that your doors are sliding or scratching the floor, or that they're bouncing off their tracks. It's simple to fix these issues. Follow these three easy steps and your bifold doors will be back in the right direction in no time.
The most common issue internal bifolding doors face is that they are sliding out of alignment. This can be due to loose screws, holes in the anchor/pivots or a misaligned bifold door. The majority times, this can be corrected by a few simple adjustments. However, if your door doesn't move at all, you may need to replace it.
You'll have to take off the door using an screwdriver, and perhaps a pair pliers to loosen any pivot pins that are tight. The screwdriver can be used to release any locking levers on the bottom pivot bracket and the pliers will allow you to wiggle the pin to release it and then take it off.
After the top roller is loose, you should be able to raise the door and swivel it downward in order to lift it out of its track and pivot brackets. This is usually quite straightforward however, be sure not to let the door hit against the frame of the door. Then you can sand the edge of the door to make it smooth. You can then repaint it or replace it with a new finish as needed.
Take off the Roller Guide
This spring-loaded guide roller is mounted on the top of the bifold door to assist with smooth operation. It is made specifically for Kenna frames, and will fit door panels ranging from 1 inch to 1-3/8 inch thick. It is made of nylon, steel, and other components. It can be used to replace a worn-out or damaged guide.
Remove any screws that hold the roller guide in place by using a screwdriver. Use your hands to slowly pull it from the frame. This may require some effort, so have a friend help you to keep the door in place as you remove it.
After the guide has been removed, carefully cut the remaining finish around the foot of the new guide using a sharp blade to remove it from the rod blank. This will make the guide's foot much easier to remove and also prevent any damage. Be cautious when doing this as the foot is extremely sharp and could cut or nick your fingers.
You may have to use some force to remove the guide, but you must be careful not to break or chip the foot. After you have removed the guide, you must remove any epoxy or threads left in the area it was fixed. This will help prevent any future problems with the guide.
After you have removed the guide, you can test your replacement by placing it in its permanent location and then applying a few rotations of masking tape or another type of guide tubing to hold it in the correct position. This will allow you to double-check the alignment of your guide and spacing to ensure that everything is properly set up. If you're eyeballing it or using the dependable CRB Spine Finder and Deflection System, this step is important to prevent any issues in the future.
The last step is to replace the door. If the guide is in the proper position and functioning just as it should, you're ready to proceed. Make sure to replace and tighten any screws or pins that you removed or loosened.
Remove the Bottom Pivot
Bifold doors can be a beautiful addition to a home, but they sometimes require to be tweaked or adjusted to keep them in good working order. Certain issues can be solved with the doors still in place. Others will require that the doors be removed. This guide will guide you through the steps to remove internal bifold pivots for doors, pins and rollers so you can get your doors sliding like new again.
Gathering your tools is the first step. Putting everything together prior to time will make it easier later on in the project. You'll need a screwdriver, pliers, and possibly a wrench. A basic set of tools can be purchased at a reasonable price from your local hardware store. It's also a good idea to have some wood glue handy. This can be very useful when you need to fix any of the rollers back into their original position.
After assembling your tools then open the bifold doors and loosen the top track bracket by using your screwdriver. Once the bracket is free, you'll be able slide the door off of the top track. It might take a little dancing to get it there, but it should come off the track.
Next, you'll need to remove the pivot at the bottom from the frame. This should be done from the outside of your home So, make sure to close any interior doors you have open. This will be much easier than working from inside. If the track on the bottom appears to be in good condition, you can simply lift the door and remove the track.
If the track is damaged, then you'll have to replace it. Hardware stores offer replacement tracks for bifold doors as well as swinging closet doors. If bifold door replacement is seriously damaged, you may have to replace it completely.
You'll need to test your doors for their proper operation. Check that the doors can be moved into and out of their positions effortlessly. You'll want to ensure that the edges of your door are aligned to the frame when closed. If they're not, you'll need to adjust the top pivot bracket and tighten or loosen the bottom set screw until the door's edge is perfectly aligned with the frame.
Replace the Roller
Bifold doors can be used to neatly cover closets as well as laundry nooks and pantries, but only if they work properly. They are made up of two panels that hinge together and open using tracks that are positioned in the frame's top. Over time, the roller guide bearings may wear out, causing the doors to sag and scrape against the floor. The roller guide can be replaced in a matter of minutes with basic tools.
The first step is to take the guide for the roller from the door panel. This requires removal of the bottom pivot bolt and loosening the screw that holds the guide on its top. After removal of the guide, pull the panel off the track. Then with a wrench, remove the top pivot bolt from the hole in the header of the frame by loosening the bolt.
A top nylon replacement guide with a 7/8 " diameter wheel and a steel base is available from Stanley, Cox or Acme. It mounts on the top of the bifold door, which is 1 to 1-3/8 inches in thickness and is spring loaded to self-adjust the upper track to ensure smooth gliding.
Another issue with a bifold door is that it scrapes the floor when it closes or opens. This can happen after adding carpet or other flooring materials that require the doors to be raised slightly to allow clearance. This issue can be solved by removing the screws that adjust the bottom pivot by loosening the top track mounting screws, and moving anchor/pivot.
A new set of top roller guides is a low-cost solution to a problem that may make bifold doors difficult to operate. They are typically found at the local hardware store in the door section. However, they can be ordered online from various vendors. In addition to a new top guide for rollers, you'll require a small bottle of Elmer's wood glue that is available in big box stores and a squeeze clamp. The clamp is used to keep the repair area closed tightly after the glue has been installed and dried.
