Objectives Public behaviour change is necessary to contain the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Based on the reinforcement sensitivity theory (RST) framework, this study presents an examination of individual differences in some relevant psychological factors. Design Cross-sectional psychometric. Methods UK respondents (N = 202) completed a personality questionnaire (RST-PQ), measures of illness attitudes, concerns about the impact of coronavirus on health services and socio-economic infrastructures, personal safety, and likelihood of voluntary self-isolation. Results Respondents most concerned were older, had negative illness attitudes, and scored higher on reward reactivity (RR), indicating the motivation to take positive approach action despite prevailing worry/anxiety. Personal safety concerns were highest in those with negative illness attitudes and higher fight-flight-freeze system (FFFS, reflecting fear/avoidance) scores. Results suggest people are experiencing psychological conflict between the urge the NHS and other social infrastructures, indicating the motivation to take positive-approach action despite worry/anxiety. Personal safety concerns are related to fight-flight-freeze system traits (FFFS, reflecting fear/avoidance). Intended self-isolation related to FFFS, but also low behavioural inhibition system (related to anxiety) scores. Older people reported themselves less likely to self-isolate. Results suggest psychological conflict between the urge to stay safe (FFFF-related) and the desire to maintain a normal, pleasurable life (RR-related). Ways of ameliorating conflict may include maladaptive behaviours (panic buying), reflecting reward-related displacement activity. © 2020 The Authors. British Journal of Health Psychology published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of British Psychological Society.As ligands of the sugar gustatory receptors, sugars have been known to activate the insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling pathway; however, the precise pathways that are activated by the sugar-bound gustatory receptors in insects remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the signaling cascades activated by NlGr11, a sugar gustatory receptor in the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), and its ligand. Galactose-bound NlGr11 (galactose-NlGr11) activated the -phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-AKT signaling cascade via insulin receptor (InR) and Gβγ in vitro. In addition, galactose-NlGr11 inhibited the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation by activating the AKT-phosphofructokinase (PFK)-ATP signaling cascade in vitro. Importantly, the InR-PI3K-AKT-PFK-AKT signaling cascade was activated and the AMPK phosphorylation was inhibited after feeding the brown planthoppers with galactose solution. Collectively, these findings confirm that NlGr11 can inhibit AMPK phosphorylation by activating the PI3K-AKT-PFK-ATP signaling cascades via both the InR and Gβγ when bound to galactose. All rights reserved.BACKGROUND Historically finding of portal venous gas (PVG) has been considered as an ominous sign and an indication for emergency surgery and reportedly has a high mortality rate. However, with the recent increasing use of imaging studies, cases of PVG associated with benign and non-life-threatening causes are increasing. The purpose of our study was to investigate the different aetiologies associated with PVG and their respective outcomes. METHODS A consecutive series of patients with PVG was identified in our group of tertiary hospitals in Western Australia over a 10-year period. Collected data included patients' demographic data, comorbidities, blood tests results, underlying aetiology of the PVG, patients' management and their outcomes. A diverse range of underlying causes identified broadly divided into thromboembolic events (n = 70), mechanical bowel obstruction (n = 29), inflammatory conditions (n = 37) and a wide range of other pathologies (n = 28). CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that PVG is not always a fatal sign and that mortality varies significantly depending on the aetiology. Both the patient's presenting history and the clinical findings have to be considered to recognize benign aetiology of PVG on computed tomography imaging and the treatment should be directed to the underlying disease with consideration of the high mortality rate of PVG associated with ischaemic bowel. © 2020 Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.Following the failure of the Fundão mine tailings dam in Brazil, approximately 32 million m3 of iron ore tailings were released into the downstream riverine system. The post-event monitoring surveys implemented the use of non-invasive acoustic methods to improve the understanding of the fish biomass distribution patterns and aquatic habitat condition of the impacted reaches of the Rio Gualaxo do Norte, Rio do Carmo and Rio Doce. The primary focus of the program was to collect hydroacoustic measurements of fish biomass which was accompanied by sonar imaging of aquatic habitats using high resolution side scan and downward imaging sonar at each site visited. The bi-annual surveys began in April 2017 and were fundamentally a multiple control-impact design as before data (prior to the dam failure event) were not available. Up to 22 sites were visited for each survey, including reservoir and river sites. Results indicate similar levels of instream habitat between control and impact river and reservoir sites. Average volumetric biomass was not significantly different between impact sites and their corresponding controls in the August 2018 survey (latest to date). Preliminary temporal analysis of the biomass dataset collected indicate that there is either stable or increasing levels of biomass detected at tailings impacted sites within the Rio Doce.
