How is national identity expressed at the national portrait gallery?
- colouring of background often feturing red/orange and blue
- generally not posed or contrived but relaxed, casual, carefree and down to earth
- often dressed casually to express individual personalities
- diverse range of cultural backgrounds
- Indiginous personalities being themselves in the modern day, not always pictured in steryotypical indiginous settings
- often depicted outdoors with iconic Aust landmarks in the background especially the 'outback'
- many are wearing the iconic acoubra hat- iconic symbols such as the Sydney Harbour bridge, football, cricket, tennis and beaches

The rising sun badge which is now officially labelled the Australian Army badge was proudly worn by our soldiers in both World Wars and is now commonly identified with the spirit of Anzac.

The tomb of the unknown soldier is to commemorate all the Australian soldiers who lost their lives in the first World War. It is for us to pay our respects to them for their great sacrifice.

The Australian Capital Territory was declared on 1 January 1911. The site was previously inhabited by an Indiginous tribe called the Ngunnawal people who used the area as a meeting place where smaller goups would gather together for corroborees and feasts. The name 'Canberra' was thought to mean meeting place derived from the aboriginal name Kamberra.
The city was designed by American architect Walter Burley Griffin after he won an International competition. The design was based on a garden city that would evolve and grow.
