Medications and Therapy For ADHD
Combining medication and therapy can help control ADHD. The brain is treated with medication and therapy helps people develop strategies and cope.
Stimulants, such as lisdexamfetamine and methylphenidate, increase levels of two chemical substances in the brain that transmit messages between cells. This increases the level of attention, impulse control, and motivation. The stimulants can trigger negative side effects like weight loss, difficulty sleeping, and an increased heart rate and blood pressure.
Stimulants
Stimulants are usually the first medications used to treat ADHD. They increase levels of dopamine and norepinephrine which aid the brain to function normally. These drugs improve focus and reduce hyperactivity as well as fidgeting. They can also improve relationships, and help people complete tasks and become organized. The effects are not long-lasting and may cause severe side-effects. Certain people, especially those with a history of bipolar disorder or depression can have personality changes when taking these medications. They might become more insecure, withdrawn or rigid, less spontaneous and talkative, or develop obsessive-compulsive symptoms. They may also increase blood pressure and heart rate. These side effects are more likely to happen in people with heart conditions. They must be monitored closely by their physician while taking stimulants.
Short-acting stimulants are available in two different dosages. The stimulants that are peaking in a few hours must be taken twice daily. Long-acting medications or those with extended release last for between 8 and 12 hours and can only be taken once a week. Both may have negative effects, including on sleep, appetite and growth. Consult your physician before taking either type about the possible side effects.
Be patient. It may take time to find the best dosage and medication for a person with ADHD. Your doctor will try different medications in small doses to determine which ones control the symptoms the best and cause the smallest amount of adverse effects. They may also need to alter the dosage in accordance with your child's reaction.
Side effects of ADHD medicine can be bothersome or even serious, but they tend to go away after a few weeks as your body adjusts to the medication. adhd medication ritalin include stomach upset, appetite loss as well as an increase in heart rate and blood pressure as well as tics (sudden repetition of movements or sounds that resemble eye blinking or clearing of the throat). Children and adolescents who take stimulants may see a slowing in growth and an increase in their final height.
If you stop taking the medication the symptoms could be recurred. It's crucial to discuss with your doctor if it's best for you or your child to continue. It is also important to check with your doctor to confirm that the medication is working as it should and there aren't any side negative effects or issues.
Non-stimulant medications for ADHD require more time to work than stimulants, but they can improve attention and reduce impulsivity and hyperactivity. They don't have the same potential for addiction or abuse as stimulants, however they can increase the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, so there is a possibility of abuse or dependence.
Some states have laws that require doctors to keep track of patients taking certain medication. This includes ADHD medicines. These laws require that doctors meet with you or your child regularly, either in person, or by phone, in order to ensure that the medication is safe and effective and to evaluate the patient's improvement. In addition, to monitoring the effectiveness of your your child's ADHD medication, they may also look for other indicators and signs of problems, including anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts.
