How to Fix Faulty Key Repairs
A damaged key fob can cause a disruption to your day. With the right tools and directions, it's easy to solve these issues.
Before you begin any repairs, always make sure you ground yourself to eliminate static electricity. It takes just about a minute and is a good practice for working with electronic devices.
Look for any debris caught underneath the bad key. Breadcrumbs and other bits may get stuck beneath keys, preventing the keys from being properly pushed in.
Broken Car Keys
Car keys are something we ignore until they fail or stop working at the most inconvenient times. Whether you're trying to open the trunk of your car for groceries, or unlocking your doors to go to a place, or driving your car and heading off to work - car keys can be extremely frustrating when they do not work.
Over time, keys for automobiles can wear out. They can be damaged by being dropped or knocked around, and the internal components may wear down to the point that they aren't functioning properly anymore. This is a major issue since it means you aren't able to drive unless you have a spare key or your mechanic fix the problem.
The majority of broken car keys can be easily repaired or replaced. If the key has been damaged inside the lock or ignition you can remove the remaining part of the key by using pliers or coated wire. A locksmith may provide you with an assortment of specially designed tools for removal that are designed to slide in along the key and place a pincer-like grip onto the broken pieces in order to remove them.
If the car key is broken in half, a quick and inexpensive fix can be to super glue the two pieces back together. It can be tricky to ensure that the pieces are aligned correctly however it can produce great results. It's a good idea to keep a pair of scissors and a roll of tape in case you need to alter the alignment just slightly.
Replace the battery in the car key fob to fix a broken key. If your car's key fob isn't turning on and you don't yet have an alternative, this is the best solution. Depending on the model of vehicle, you could often do this by removing the key fob and opening it with a screwdriver or a small tool.
If the issue is more serious like if your key fob is completely unresponsive or doesn't turn on at all, you'll require replacement. This is something that you can do at a dealership however it's more affordable to call an auto locksmith to visit your home and make the required repairs or replace the key fob completely.
Broken Key Fobs
Car key fobs aren't indestructible, and like all electronic devices, they are prone to malfunctions at some point. Fortunately, they're not all that difficult to fix when they stop working. The first thing to determine is what's wrong.
Most of the time when the key fob ceases to function, it's because the battery is dead. The simplest and most economical solution is to replace the battery. You can do this at home.
If replacing the battery doesn't work, try disassembling it and cleaning it. Your fob is equipped with a circuit board inside that houses a variety of "contact pads" for every button you can press on the fob (lock buttons and trunk buttons, for example). The contact pads have a rubbery feel and are covered with an electrically conducting film that wears off with time. With a cotton swab, and some rubbing alcohol, you can scrub the contacts in your key fob to eliminate any corrosion that could be hindering their functioning.
You can also try using a pair or tweezers to re-seat the contacts on your key fob in case you suspect they are broken or loose. It is recommended to apply silicone to the back of the key fob first before you insert the new contacts. Silicone will seal the contacts to keep out water.
A key fob that is not working could be due to the fact that it is not paired with the vehicle. When you press a key fob button, it transmits a code to the car, which tells it what it is trying to accomplish. If the key fob is not paired it will no longer recognize the vehicle and won't allow you to start your engine.
It's time to contact a locksmith or a dealership technician if it's impossible to get the key fob that you want to pair with your car. They'll have the tools to reprogram the key fob and get it functioning again. It's likely that you'll have to pay for the service, but it's much less than buying a brand new key fob.
Keys that aren't responsive
If the keyboard key isn't working, it could be an absolute nightmare. The first step is to make sure that the key isn't blocked by something physical. Dust, hair, and other debris can build up over time and block a key's movement or cause interference to its circuitry. Try gently removing your key and cleaning underneath it using a rag that has been soaked in ruby alcohol. Sometimes, this is all that's required to get your key back in working order.
If the key still doesn't work, it's possible that it's a problem with your software. If the key you're using isn't doing what you expect, make sure to check the settings of your game to ensure that it's correctly mapped.
You can also try reinstalling the drivers for your keyboard to resolve the issue. Drivers that are outdated or damaged can cause your keyboard to cease working, so you should always keep them updated whenever you can.
Another possibility is that the key is simply damaged. Key switches are comprised of two circuits, and they could wear out over time to the point that they no longer recognize the press. If this is the situation it is recommended to replace the keyboard since the keyboard won't perform as it should.
If you've gone through all of these fixes, but the key still isn't responding, it's probably time to get your laptop or external keyboard examined by an expert. It could be that the membrane covering the keyboard is damaged or one of the keys are damaged.
You can test your keys with a keyboard tester. The website will inform you if the keys are registering correctly or not. If they're registered correctly, then it is most likely to be a software issue. Then, you can begin applying the other fixes in order to regain full functionality. You could also consider using an external keyboard for a temporary solution until the internal keyboard is repaired or replaced.
Keys that don't work
Keys that aren't working can be a huge inconvenience, but they're usually fairly simple to fix. Most of the time, a malfunctioning key is caused by a piece of grime underneath the key or simply not connected correctly to the laptop or keyboard. If you're not sure whether this is the case, start by cleaning the keys and using canned air to remove dust and dirt.
The key could have become unbalanced. This is another problem that can be solved by a professional, though it is more likely to require replacement of the key. If car keying repair own an electronic key and it can't be turned with metal keys, the transponder chip may have stopped working. You'll need a new key programmed.
If your laptop keyboard or external keyboard keys seem to not be registering any action in any way, you could try a key test website. This can help you figure out if there's any problems with software or the keyboard itself.
A switch that isn't functioning correctly can also be the cause of keys not working as expected. You can check whether your keyboard is mechanical by looking underneath the cap to see whether there is any debris stuck. If you spot any you want to remove, make use of canned air to remove it up and then remove the keycap. This will let you replace the hooks that connect the retainer and switch and, hopefully, restore functionality to your key.
If a particular key on your keyboard only doesn't perform its intended function in one application, it's likely that the key has been assigned to a different action by the game's keyboard settings. Check the settings of your keyboard and then try pressing the key again to see whether it's functioning as intended. If not, it's best to purchase a brand new keyboard and have it installed by an experienced. This is especially true if you play a game that requires a lot of typing.
