Fitting a Cat Flap
It may seem difficult to put up the flap for your cat however, with the proper instructions, it's not too difficult. First, determine the height you would like the flap to be (on average the belly height). Mark this point on the door, and use the template as a reference to drill.

If you have a kitten that is still a newborn and you want to keep the door open, gently prop it slightly open and encourage it to pass through. Reward it each time it goes through.

Measure the Door

A cat flap lets your pet to move into and out of your home at any time. This can help keep your cat healthy since it will ensure it is getting enough exercise and will also allow it to return inside if it gets trapped in the elements during bad weather. This will reduce the amount of time you allow your cat go in and out and also make your home safer by notifying you when it's left.

However, it is important that the flap for your cat is properly fitted to stop your pet from being able to escape through it or be pushed through by any other animals (e.g. dogs). It is important to measure the height of your pet's belly as well as the doorway of your house in order to make sure that the flap is at the correct height. If your cat is a little longer or taller than the normal, you can adjust the flap's height by moving it up or down a small amount.

The next step is to use a spirit level to mark the centre of the door where you will put the flap. Utilizing the marking as a guide, take the jigsaw and cut the form of the flap inside the door. After you have cut the flap then sand the edges to create smooth surfaces. Make any holes that are required.

The process of fitting the cat flap isn't as complicated as you believe and it shouldn't take more than two hours to complete the entire task from start to completion. The process can be slightly more difficult if you have to install it in a uPVC door or composite one. This is because these doors are available in different thicknesses, which can affect the way the holes are cut. This is why we always recommend calling a professional to carry out the task, especially if you have never worked with glass before.

Measure Your Cat

A cat flap can save you from hours of listening to your pet meow for you to let it in or out. This is especially helpful when you're at work most of the day and your cat is in the waiting room until you come home regardless of the weather.

It is important to measure your cat first before you begin the installation. It might seem like a straightforward task, but it's essential to make sure you measure the right measurements. In the event that you don't, your cat may have difficulty putting it in use.

First, ensure that your cat is relaxed and not anxious prior to taking the measurements. You'll need to hold them in a manner that they cannot move and ensure that the ruler or measuring tape is flat against their body and not bending in any place. By keeping the ruler or measuring tape against their body from the top of their head to the bottom of their tail can allow you to get an precise measurement.

Once you've figured out the measurements of your cat's body, it's time to take a look at the door and decide where you want to place the flap. Place replacement upvc door panels with cat flap at the level of your cat's belly. This will allow them to walk through the door with minimal effort. This will also prevent the flap from making a lot of noise as it moves back and forth.

You must take into consideration the thickness of the uPVC or composite door too. While timber doors are of a similar thickness, uPVC and composite doors can be very different in their overall design and can make fitting a cat flap more difficult since you have to ensure that the hole you cut is the correct size for your pet.

It is also worth studying the instructions that come with the cat flap kit to locate an illustration template that can be used to mark the position of the hole in the door. This will allow you to see the location where the opening should be and also make sure the template is placed correctly on the door. It is also a good idea to utilize a spirit-level to make sure that the template is perfectly against the door.

Cut the Flap

You will need to cut a hole in the door panel for your cat flap before you can put it in place. This can be a challenging job and it is recommended to seek the help of a professional cat flap fitter for this step in case you don't have the knowledge or skills to tackle it yourself. It is also recommended that you consult the instructions that come with the kit to discover how to do this correctly.

To do this, you will need to take a measurement of the height of your cat or kitten's belly and use this as a reference point. As a general rule put the flap approximately 10-15 centimeters above the ground. This is the standard height of the stomach for cats. This will allow your cat to pass through the flap easily and make it difficult for other cats or nosy neighbours to enter or exit.

Draw the location of the cat flap on the door with a pencil. Then, if your kit includes a template for paper, place it on top of the door and use the marks to drill holes into every corner of the template. Then, you'll be able to cut out the template and replace it with the flap for cats.

You can install the cat flap yourself inside an uPVC or wood door when you're confident using the Jigsaw. Be sure not to cut through the vertical rails or mullions of your door. You can use a jigsaw to cut your panel into a circle or square according to the way you'd like to cut it. Be patient, and don't try to force the jigsaw to cut faster.

Once the hole is made, carefully fit the flap onto its new home and ensure that it's securely fixed. If the flap is fitted with screw caps, push them onto the protruding bolts. Once the screws have been installed smooth the edges and apply sealant to any gaps. This will prevent the entry of draughts into your home.

Place the Flap

If you have an ordinary cat flap, you can try to encourage your pet to go through it by placing a small amount cat food on the outside of the door. Alternately, you can push the cat through with your hand or a stick. Once your pet has become accustomed to moving through the flap, it will be capable of walking through the flap as it pleases. This allows you to let it in and out at any time it wishes.

You can install a cat flap into an UPVC or glass door but it's not exactly the same as fitting one into a timber external door because the UPVC and glass doors aren't a uniform thickness. This could have a dramatic effect on the way you cut the opening for the flap and could affect the way your flap will fit properly once it's installed.

The mounting kit could include a template showing you the best places to drill holes. If the kit doesn't come with an example you can copy it to create your own. When cutting, it's crucial to keep the jigsaw from being pushed too to the point that you make a larger hole than necessary in your door.

Most cat flaps are square or rectangular in shape, but there are also some which are circular, and they are typically more difficult to install. If you have a circular flap, it's important to make sure the hole is in the right position on your door because in the event that it's not, the cat won't be able to use it and could be left in the open all day (or even at night).

Some models of cat flap come with locks that let you manage when your cat comes and goes. They can be extremely useful in the event that you are concerned about your cat going out at night and coming back in due to the darkness, or if you're at work all day. The lock can be turned on to allow or deny entry, and some can be locked in either direction permitting you to close the door completely, which is especially beneficial for older or ill cats who don't want to go out in the rain.
