A series of 30 novel N,N disubstituted selenoureas were synthesized, characterized, and their antioxidant ability was tested using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays. Additionally, their cytotoxic activity was tested in vitro in a panel of three different cancer (breast, lung and colon) and two normal cell lines. Each selenourea entity contains a para-substituted phenyl ring with different electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups, and different aliphatic and aromatic nuclei. All of the synthesized selenoureas present antioxidant capacity at high concentrations in the DPPH assay, and three of them (2b, 2c and 2d) showed greater radical scavenging capacity than ascorbic acid at lower concentrations. find more These results were confirmed by the ABTS assay, where these novel selenoureas present even higher antioxidant capacity than the reference compound Trolox. On the other hand, 10 selenoureas present IC50 values below 10 µM in at least one cancer cell line, resulting in the adamantyl nucleus (6a-6e), the most interesting in terms of activity and selectivity. Outstanding results were found for selenourea 6c, tested in the NCI60 cell line panel and showing an average GI50 of 1.49 µM for the 60 cell lines, and LC50 values ranging from 9.33 µM to 4.27 µM against 10 of these cancer cell lines. To gain insight into its anticancer activity mechanism, we investigated the cell cycle progression of the promising compound 6c, as well as the type of programmed-cell death in a colon cancer cell line it provokes (HT-29). Compound 6c provoked S phase cell cycle arrest and the induction of cell death was independent of caspase activation, suggesting autophagy, though this assertion requires additional studies. Overall, we envision that this compound can be further developed for the potential treatment of colon cancer. The use of rapid antigenic tests (Ag-RDTs) to diagnose a SARS-CoV-2 infection has become a common practice recently. This study aimed to evaluate performance of Abbott PanbioTM Ag-RDTs with regard to nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) in the early stages of the disease. A cohort of 149,026 infected symptomatic patients, reported in Catalonia from November 2020 to January 2021, was selected. The positivity rates of the two tests were compared with respect to the dates of symptom onset. Ag-RDTs presented positivity rates of 84% in the transmission phases of the disease and 31% in the pre-symptomatic period, compared to 93% and 91%, respectively, for NAAT. The detection of many false negatives with Ag-RDTs during the pre-symptomatic period demonstrates the risk of virus dissemination with this diagnostic technique if used outside the symptomatic period.Understanding the deformation behavior during nanoimprint lithography is crucial for high resolution patterning. Molecular dynamics modeling was implemented to investigate the effect of different mold profiles (cylindrical, rectangular, and spherical) on the von Mises stress, lattice dislocations, and material deformation. Relatively higher von Mises stress (1.08 × 107 Pa) was observed for the spherical mold profile compared to the rectangular and cylindrical profiles due to the larger surface area of contact during the mold penetration stage of NIL. Substantial increases in the von Mises stress were observed for all the mold geometries during the mold penetration stage. The von Mises stresses had a reduction in the relaxation and mold retrieval stages based on the rearrangement of the gold atoms. The lattice dislocation during the deformation process revealed the formation of the BCC structure which further reverted to the FCC structure after the mold retrieval. The polyhedral template matching (PTM) method was used to explain the retention of the FCC structure and subsequent ductile behavior of the substrate. The cylindrical mold had the lowest percentage spring back in both of the orthogonal directions and thus replicated the mold profile with high-fidelity as compared to the spherical and rectangular molds. The findings of this research can aid the design of molds for several applications. The gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, is a notorious forest defoliator, and various pathogens are known to act as natural regulators of its population density. As a widespread herbivore with a broad range of inhabited areas and host plants, it is potentially exposed to parasitic microorganisms from other insect hosts. In the present paper, we determined the susceptibility of gypsy moth larvae to the microsporidium Nosema pyrausta from the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis. Gypsy moth samples from two localities of Western Siberia were used. N. pyrausta developed infections in the salivary gland and adipose tissue of gypsy moth prepupae and pupae, forming spore masses after 30 days of alimentary exposure to the second instar larvae. Among the experimental groups, the infection levels ranged from 0 to 9.5%. Effects of a covert baculovirus infection, phenylthiourea pretreatment and feeding insects on an artificial diet versus natural foliage were not significant in terms of microsporidia prevalence levels. Thus, L. dispar showed a low level of susceptibility to a non-specific microsporidium. It can be referred to as a resistant model host and not an appropriate substitute host for laboratory propagation of the microsporidium.Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial, solid, pediatric malignancy and, despite the constant progress of treatment and development of innovative therapies, remains a complex, challenging disease causing major morbidity and mortality in children. There is significant variability in the management of neuroblastoma, partially due to the heterogeneity of the clinical and biological behavior, and partially secondary to the different approaches between treating institutions. Anesthesia takes an integral part in the multidisciplinary care of patients with NB, from diagnosis to surgery and pain control. This paper aims to review and discuss the critical steps of the perioperative and operative management of children undergoing surgery for neuroblastoma. Anesthesia and analgesia largely depend on tumor location, surgical approach, and extension of the surgical dissection. Attention should be paid to the physio-pathological changes on cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and immune systems induced by the tumor or by chemotherapy.
