The results of pyrosequencing and TNIK mRNA expression were consistent with those of the microarray study. Bioinformatics analyses, dual-luciferase reporter assays and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) studies showed that TNIK interacted with genes associated with schizophrenia and NRF1 was identified as a novel transcription factor (TF) that binds to TNIK in its TSS200 region. Thus, the regulatory function of NRF1 may be influenced by the status of the methylated CpG site in this region. In summary, our study provides new insights into the epigenetic mechanisms that regulate schizophrenia. Studies of the functions of TNIK methylation should be performed in vitro and in vivo to provide a better understanding of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is emerging as a safe and well-tolerated experimental intervention for major depressive disorder (MDD), with very minimal cognitive side-effects. However, the underlying mechanism of action of MST remains uncertain. Here, we used resting-state electroencephalography (RS-EEG) to characterise the physiological effects of MST for treatment resistant MDD. We recorded RS-EEG in 21 patients before and after an open label trial of MST applied over the prefrontal cortex using a bilateral twin coil. RS-EEG was analysed for changes in functional connectivity, network topology, and spectral power. We also ran further baseline comparisons between the MDD patients and a cohort of healthy controls (n = 22). Network-based connectivity analysis revealed a functional subnetwork of significantly increased theta connectivity spanning frontal and parieto-occipital channels following MST. The change in theta connectivity was further found to predict clinical response to treatment. An additional widespread subnetwork of reduced beta connectivity was also elucidated. Graph-based topological analyses showed an increase in functional network segregation and reduction in integration in the theta band, with a decline in segregation in the beta band. Finally, delta and theta power were significantly elevated following treatment, while gamma power declined. No baseline differences between MDD patients and healthy subjects were observed. These results highlight widespread changes in resting-state brain dynamics following a course of MST in MDD patients, with changes in theta connectivity providing a potential physiological marker of treatment response. this website Future prospective studies are required to confirm these initial findings.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a condition associated with chronic pain in muscles and soft tissues. Extant literature has demonstrated an association between FM, mood symptoms and suicidal behaviour. This systematic review aims to synthesize available literature assessing the prevalence of suicidality in FM populations and qualitatively review the included articles.
PsycINFO, Google Scholar and PubMed databases were systematically searched for studies published from database inception to 15 February 2020. Studies were included that assessed FM as a primary or co-primary disease condition, as well as an assessment of suicidal behaviour (suicidal ideations (SI), suicide attempts (SA) and death by suicide (SC)). The quality of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.
699 unique articles were reviewed for eligibility. Data were derived from nine studies (cross-sectional k=5; retrospective cohort k=4) that assessed suicidal behaviour in FM participants (SI k=5, SC k=3, SA k=3). Four studies assessing SI found elevated rates of SI among FM participants. Three studies found elevated risk for SC and three studies found increased SA in FM participants relative to the general population. In two studies, this association was no longer significant after adjusting for depression and other psychiatric comorbidities.
Preliminary findings suggest that FM is associated with significantly higher risks for SI, SA and SC compared to the general population. There may be unique risk factors underlying suicidal behaviour in FM patients and the interaction between FM and other known risk factors (i.e., mental illness) require further investigation.

Giraffe reside in fission-fusion social systems, and we studied how reproductive status influence associations among females, as well as how associations differ between calves and juveniles. Data were collected in Katavi National Park, Tanzania, during five study periods. We used social network analysis to identify whether reproductive status and developmental stages predict differences in giraffe social association. We found that females with offspring maintain stronger associations than females without offspring. We also revealed that calves and juveniles had similar network association patterns. Our results suggest that the presence of dependent offspring influences the social associations of females and individuals less than 1.5 years of age are still maintaining strong social associations with nursery group members. We conclude that nursery groups among giraffe are co-operative rearing units that probably reduce the costs of rearing to mothers, and may provide a group structure for animals to begin to develop skills useful for their future life in a fission-fusion social system.Sexual minority men (SMM) face substantial disparities in rates of binge eating compared to heterosexual individuals, underscoring the need to study risk factors for the development of binge eating amongst SMM. One potential explanation for this disparity in binge eating is minority stress theory, which posits that minority groups face stressors, such as discrimination, due to their stigmatized position in society. Additionally, specific domains of discrimination may confer different levels of risk for binge eating. Therefore, the current study examined the association of various forms of discrimination, including appearance-based discrimination, and binge eating in a sample of SMM. A sample of 200 SMM (analytic sample of N = 187) from the greater Boston area completed self-report questionnaires assessing frequency of different forms of perceived discrimination (appearance, sexual orientation, race, etc.) and binge eating. A hierarchical binary logistic regression model was used to examine the association of different forms of discrimination with binge eating.
