investigate the association between the +45T > G variant of the ADIPOQ gene and the metabolic syndrome (MS) in patients with sickle cell trait (SCT). 33 patients with SCT and 35 control group participated in the study. OSMI-4 Lower levels of HDL and adiponectin were observed in patients with G allele and sickle cell trait. There were no differences between the prevalence of MS between the groups and there was no association between the +45T > G variant of the ADIPOQ gene and MS risk allele.
Participants with and without sickle cell anemia answered a questionnaire, performed anthropometric and laboratory analyzes. They were genotyped for the +45T > G variant of the ADIPOQ gene and evaluated for the presence or absence of metabolic syndrome. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of UNIPAMPA (RS/Brazil).
The GG + TG genetic model, it was associated with lower levels of adiponectin and HDL cholesterol in the SCT group. There was no association between the other studied markers and MS.
For the first time, an association was demonstrated between the G allele of the +45T > G variant of the ADIPOQ gene and a worse cardiometabolic profile (lower serum concentrations of adiponectin and HDL cholesterol) in patients with sickle cell trait.

This may in part, explain the recent surge in the acceptance of podcasts for pedagogy, alongside the COVID-19 pandemic. Both students and lecturers have been greatly affected by this pandemic which may explain the uptake in the use of podcasts. However, few studies have explored podcast use for pedagogy and thus, there is limited empirical backing. This study investigated pedagogy and considered podcast performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating condition, cultural, social, and political beliefs factors in Nigerian universities. This research introduced cross-sectional quantitative methods, which utilised a questionnaire, gathering data from three Federal Universities in Nigeria. The formulated hypothesis was rejected using multiple regression and a total of eight hundred and twenty-nine questionnaires were gathered from Nigerian university lecturers. The data was analysed and the results showed a low-level outcome with regards to podcast acceptance for pedagogy in Nigeria Federal Universities.
Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are one of the key public health issues worldwide causing 1.3 million deaths every year. This study aimed to determine the patterns of injuries due to road traffic accidents (RTAs), the severity of injuries, and factors associated with injury severity.
A cross-sectional study was conducted among RTA victims, who attended two large tertiary care hospitals located inside the Dhaka metropolitan area, through structured interview between 28 January and 22 March 2020.
Among 375 RTI patients, a total of 1390 injuries were recorded among interviewed patients, yielding a mean of 3.7 injuries per patient. The most frequently injured systems were external (n = 351), lower limb (n = 235), head and neck (n = 151), and face (n = 150). The mean ISS were 20.96 ± 12.027 with a maximum of 65 and a minimum of 4. Among patients, 87 (23.20%) had a severe injury, and 37 (9.87%) patients were critically injured. A statistically significant variation in ISS was observed in ANOVA among various categories of age, education, occupation, and purpose of going outside, vehicle type and fitness, accident type, road type, times required in hospitalization, and death history (p < 0.05).
Our study has revealed several important findings which will help stakeholders and policymakers devise better policies to reduce RTA and RTA related injuries in Bangladesh.

Because ICI therapies support an adaptive immune response, patients with an active tumor microenvironment (TME) may be more likely to respond, and thus biomarkers capable of discerning an active from a quiescent TME may be useful in patient selection. We developed an algorithm optimized for genes expressed in the mesenchymal and immunomodulatory subtypes of a 101-gene triple negative breast cancer model (Ring, BMC Cancer, 2016, 16143) as a means to capture the immunological state of the TME. We compared the outcome of the algorithm (IO score) with the 101-gene model and found 88% concordance, indicating the models are correlated but not identical, and may be measuring different TME features. We found 92.5% correlation between IO scores of matched tumor epithelial and adjacent stromal tissues, indicating the IO score is not specific to these tissues, but reflects the TME as a whole. We observed a significant difference in IO score (p = 0.0092) between samples with high tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and samples with increased neutrophil load, demonstrating agreement between IO score and these two prognostic markers. Finally, among non-small cell lung cancer patients receiving immunotherapy, we observed a significant difference in IO score (p = 0.0035) between responders and non-responders, and a significant odds ratio (OR = 5.76, 95% CI 1.30-25.51, p = 0.021), indicating the IO score can predict patient response. The immuno-oncology algorithm may offer independent and incremental predictive value over current biomarkers in the clinic.Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are an essential tool for Bioinformatic analysis, with extensive success at finding patterns (e.g. CRISPR arrays or genes of interest) in DNA or protein sequences. HMMs are conceptually intricate, and the algorithms that make use of them are complicated. Thus they present a challenge to Bioinformatics instructors at the undergraduate level, particularly when the students' educational backgrounds are broadly diverse. At San Jose State University, many undergraduate Bioinformatics students are Biology majors with little or no prior coursework in mathematics, statistics, or programming. For this population a theory-based approach to teaching HMMs would be ineffective. To address this problem we have developed an active learning module that takes advantage of the similarity between HMMs and board games. Our materials include a physical game board for introducing concepts, a software implementation of the game, similar software for visualizing and manipulating HMMs that model proteins, in-class lab exercises, and homework assignments.
