A survey was carried out to investigate the knowledge, perception and interest of secondary school students about biotechnology. A total of 334 questionnaires were distributed to students in Senior Secondary 3 classes from eight secondary schools within Calabar metropolis. Data was collected and analyzed using SPSS version 7.5. Results revealed 105 (34.21%) of students had limited knowledge of medical biotechnology, genetic engineering and genetically modified products. 91 (30.03%) of the students agreed that biotechnology is the use of living organisms to produce goods and services while 102 (33.41%) accepted that biotechnology is a new technology based on biology 62 (20.39%) were willing to embrace the applications of biotechnology. 152 (50.03%) do not agree that biotech will improve services for mankind; 90 (29.51) had no idea about the applications of biotechnology; 31 (10.24%) students disagreed that cloning results in perfectly identical individuals while the highest positive responses; 92 (30.31%) was recorded for questions regarding in vitro fertilization. The students also showed a very low interest 76 (25%) in pursuing biotechnology as a degree in the University. Generally students' knowledge, perception, and interest in Biotechnology were low among Secondary School students in Calabar. There is a need to immediately increase enlightenment and emphasis on the applications of biotechnology among Secondary school students to enable them appreciate the benefits of biotechnology.Antibiotic resistance in Helicobacter pylori has been growing worldwide with current treatment regimens. Development of new compounds for treatment of H. pylori infections is urgently required to achieve a successful eradication therapy in the future. Armeniaspirols, a novel class of natural products isolated from Streptomyces armeniacus, have been previously identified as antibacterial agents against Gram-positive pathogens. In this study, we found that armeniaspirol A (ARM1) exhibited potent antibacterial activity against H. pylori, including multidrug-resistant strains, with MIC range values of 4-16 μg ml-1 . The underlying mechanism of action of ARM1 against H. pylori involved the disruption of bacterial cell membranes. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/TGX-221.html Also, ARM1 inhibited biofilm formation, eliminated preformed biofilms and killed biofilm-encased H. pylori in a dose-dependent manner. In a mouse model of multidrug-resistant H. pylori infection, dual therapy with ARM1 and omeprazole showed efficient in vivo killing efficacy comparable to the standard triple therapy, and induced negligible toxicity against normal tissues. Moreover, at acidic pH 2.5, ARM1 exhibited a much more potent anti-H. pylori activity than metronidazole. Thus, these findings demonstrated that ARM1 is a novel potent anti-H. pylori agent, which can be developed as a promising drug lead for treatment of H. pylori infections.
As living alone is associated with poor mental health, seeking a moderating factor in this relationship may help enhance quality of life of older people living alone. Therefore, this study examined the moderating effect of leisure activity on the relationship between living alone and mental health in older people.
This study employed a cross-sectional analysis of questionnaire data. Research was conducted in a metropolitan Tokyo ward from September to October 2017. Participants were 314 community-dwelling Japanese individuals (158 women, 156 men) aged 70-84 years (mean ± SD, 77.7 ± 4.4). We analyzed mental health using the Japanese version of the World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index as the outcome variable, and the 11 items of the Leisure Activity Scale and living arrangements as explanatory variables. Multivariate analyses were used to examine effects of leisure activity on living arrangements and mental health.
The proportion of people living alone was 22.9% (N = 72), and the mental health score was mean ± SD, 14.2 ± 7.2. Multiple regression analysis showed that subjective economic status (β = -0.177), instrumental activities of daily living (β = 0.167), living arrangements (β = -0.142) and leisure activity (β = 0.481) were associated with mental health. The interaction effect between living arrangements and leisure activity on mental health was significant (β = 0.112).
Our findings show that leisure activity moderates poor mental health in older adults living alone. Accordingly, interventions should encourage older adults living alone to engage in leisure activity to improve their mental health. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2021; 21 421-425.

We examined the effect of pre-LT sleeve gastrectomy (SG), as compared to medical weight loss (MWL), on post-LT outcomes. This is a cohort study of adults (≥18 years) with medically complicated obesity who were eligible for pre-LT SG and underwent LT from January 1, 2006 to June 1, 2016. Logistic regression models evaluated the association of SG on post-LT diabetes and hypertension, defined as new-onset or progressive disease post-LT. Cox regression models evaluated the association of SG on recurrent and de novo nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Among 70 LT recipients who were eligible for pre-LT SG, 14 (20%) underwent SG and 56 (80%) underwent MWL only. Mean follow-up was 5.2 years post-LT. The SG cohort sustained higher % total body weight loss at 3 years post-LT (28.9% vs. 5.4%, p less then .001). In multivariable analyses, SG was associated with significantly lower risk of post-LT diabetes (OR 0.04, 95% CI 0.00-0.41, p = .01), hypertension (OR 0.15, 95% CI 0.04-0.67, p = .01), and recurrent and de novo NAFLD (HR 0.19, 95% CI 0.04-0.91, p = .04). When compared to MWL, SG resulted in sustained weight loss and significantly lower risk of diabetes, hypertension, and recurrent and de novo NAFLD post-LT.
