Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a special unit where critically ill patients who require advanced respiratory or hemodynamic support are admitted. Little has been published about surgical intensive care unit patients in Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of admission and treatment outcomes of adult surgical patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC).

Surgical patients made up 91(22.1%) of 411 admissions of adult intensive care unit. Of these, 82 (M F = 1.51) patients were analyzed. Age ranged from 16 to 82 years with a mean age of 43 years (SD +/-18.2). Emergency admissions accounted for 70(85.4%) cases. The top three primary admission diagnoses were generalized peritonitis secondary to perforated viscus (25,30.5%), bowel obstruction (21,25.6 %) and trauma (13,15.9%). Acute respiratory failure (38,46.3%) and septic shock (23,28.0%) were the leading indications of intensive care unit admission. Most patients (62,75.6%) received mechanical ventilatory support. The mean length of intensive care unit stay was 7.3 days (SD+/-5.2).Death occurred in 33(40.2%) patients. Mortality was higher in those who stayed for 48 hours (OR=5.6;95% CI 1.60-19.69; p=0.007) and in ventilated patients (OR=5.3; 95% CI 1.41-19.98; p=0.013).

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) currently pose a challenge to public health and elicit considerable financial, physical and social problems for workers. There is a need to attain a deeper understanding of this predicament among office workers, in order to tackle it successfully. This study sought to investigate the prevalence of WMSDs among office workers in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as well as discover its associations with their personal/work details and reported risk factors.
A cross-sectional survey was executed among 217 office workers in different HEIs, who filled self-report questionnaires on WMSDs. Data were analyzed via descriptive and inferential statistics.
The overall prevalence rate of WMSDs was 71.9% among these staff. The lower back, wrists/hands and shoulders were the most reported body regions for these disorders. WMSD prevalence had significant associations with sex (p = 0.004), age (p = 0.028), working hours (p = 0.003) and work experience (p = 0.014). There e revealed to significantly influence WMSD prevalence, emphasizing the need for their effective detection and curtailment.
Children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) are at increased risk for severe acute malnutrition (SAM). We aimed to determine the magnitude and determinants of SAM among children with CHD in a tertiary hospital.
Retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among children with CHD between 2016 and 2019. Clinical and anthropometric data were retrieved from medical records. Anthropometric assessment was done by using WHO standard growth curves. Data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences V22. Statistical significance was set at p-value <0.05, and multivariable logistic regression was used to determine predictors.
There were 2400 pediatric admissions during the study period, CHD accounted for 6.5%(156) of admissions. For review, 141 records were eligible. The gender distribution was comparable, males 51.1% (72). Infants (<12 months) and older children (≥12 months) accounted for 57.4% (81) and 42.6% (60) of study subjects, respectively. SAM was documented in 51.8% (73) of the study subjects, [95% CI 44.7-60.2]. Infants had higher odds of SAM compared to children aged ≥12 months[adjusted odds ratio (AOR)= 4.48, 95%CI2.07-9.70]. Anemic children had higher odds for SAM[AOR =3.76, 95% CI1.54-9.18]. Children without acyanotic CHD with heart failure(HF) were 58% less likely to develop SAM[AOR= 0.42, 95% CI0.19-0.96].
The burden of SAM among children with CHD is high. Younger age, anemia and acyanotic CHD with HF predicted SAM. Selleckchem FG-4592 Screening for anemia and targeted anthropometric assessment are recommended for early SAM detection.

This study was conducted to determine the breastfeeding practices among parous antenatal attendees in two teaching hospitals in Southwest Nigeria.
A cross-sectional study was carried out on 340 parous antenatal clinic attendees in two teaching hospitals in Ogun State, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data on breastfeeding practices. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) windows version 21.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA).
Out of a total of 340 women, 319 (93.8%) breastfed their last babies. The median duration of breastfeeding was 15 months. One hundred and thirty two women (38.8%) initiated breastfeeding within 30 minutes of delivery, and 200 women (58.8%) exclusively breastfed their babies for six months. The majority of the women, 299(87.9%k) did not report any problem associated with breastfeeding. Logistic regression analysis showed that women who had no breastfeeding problems were more likely to exclusively breastfeed their infants for six months compared to those with breastfeeding problems (AOR 3.4; CI 1.6-7.1; P=0.001). Similarly, women who got breastfeeding information from mass media were more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding for six months compared to those that got breastfeeding information from other sources (AOR42.2; CI 3.1-568.5; P=0.005).
Exclusive breastfeeding is suboptimal in Ogun State, Nigeria. Provision of breastfeeding information via mass media will assist in improving breastfeeding practice. Educating mothers on the techniques that help to prevent breastfeeding complications will also be beneficial.
