We previously developed a custom-design thoracic bone scintigraphy-specific phantom ("SIM
bone phantom") to assess image quality in bone single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). We aimed to develop an automatic assessment system for imaging technology in bone SPECT and demonstrate the validity of this system.

Four spherical lesions of 13-, 17-, 22-, and 28-mm diameters in the vertebrae of SIM
bone phantom simulating the thorax were filled with radioactivity (target-to-background ratio 4). Dynamic SPECT acquisitions were performed for 15min; reconstructions were performed using ordered subset expectation maximization at 3-15-min timepoints. Consequently, 216 lesions (54 SPECT images) were obtained 120 and 96 lesions were used for software development and validation, respectively. The developed software used statistical parametric mapping to rigidly register and automatically calculate quantitative indexes (contrast-to-noise ratio, % coefficient of variance, % detectability equivalence volumexhibited an almost perfect agreement with the gold standard. The percentage agreement and kappa coefficient were 91.7% and 0.93, respectively, in 96 lesions for validation.

We aimed to determine whether neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL)/hepcidin-25 ratio (urinary concentrations of NGAL divided by that of hepcidin-25) defined subtypes are of prognostic relevance in cardiac surgery patients.

We studied 198 higher-risk cardiac surgery patients. Smartphone applications (apps) have been designed that help patients to accurately count their carbohydrate intake in order to optimize prandial insulin dose matching. Our aim was to evaluate the accuracy of two carbohydrate (carb) counting apps.

Medical students, in the role of mock patients, evaluated meals using two smartphone apps Foodvisor
(which uses automatic food photo recognition technology) and Glucicheck
(which requires the manual entry of carbohydrates with the help of a photo gallery). The macronutrient quantifications obtained with these two apps were compared to a reference quantification.

The carbohydrate content of the entire meal was underestimated with Foodvisor
(Foodvisor
quantification minus gold standard quantification = -7.2 ± 17.3g; p < 0.05) but reasonably accurately estimated with Glucicheck
(Glucicheck
quantification minus gold standard quantification = 1.4 ± 13.4g; ns). The percentage of meals with an absolute error in carbohydrate quantification above 20g was greater for Foodvisor
compared to Glucicheck
(30% vs 14%; p < 0.01).

The carb counting accuracy was slightly better when using Glucicheck
compared to Foodvisor
. However, both apps provided a lower mean absolute carb counting error than that usually made by T1D patients in everyday life, suggesting that such apps may be a useful adjunct for estimating carbohydrate content.

Despite the continuously growing number of therapeutic options for type2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) including insulins, a large percentage of patients fail to achieve HbA1c targets. Several real-world studies focused on patients with T2DM receiving insulin treatment in outpatient settings were conducted, but information about real-world in-hospital insulin management is lacking. The aim of this study was to describe the management of insulin therapy with a focus on basal-bolus and premixed insulin regimens in patients with T2DM under routine in-hospital medical practice in the Czech Republic.

This non-interventional prospective study was conducted from June 2014 to December 2017 in 22 centers in the Czech Republic under routine clinical practice conditions. Adult patients admitted to hospital with metabolically uncontrolled T2DM [HbA1c ≥ 60mmol/mol; > 7.6% Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT)] and there treated with basal-bolus and premixed insulin regimens were documented during hospitalization.
