This critical review provides an insight into the development and implementation of DSSs, published and emerging, together with assessment of their strengths, limitations and opportunities for future integration. Brownfields DSS applications include remediation technology selection; and land use planning; and risk assessment. The results of this review lead the authors to identify four opportunities to improve brownfield DSSs (i) increased use of qualitative socioeconomic criteria, particularly costs and economic variables, (ii) decision-support during the early stages of brownfield redevelopment, (iii) the integration of predictive modelling methods, and (iv) improvements of user interfaces and modern web-based functionalities.A novel carboxylesterase gene estyz5 was isolated from a soil metagenomic library. The recombinant enzyme EstYZ5 is 298 amino acids in length with a predicted molecular weight of 32 kDa. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis revealed that EstYZ5 belongs to the hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) family with a deduced catalytic triad of Ser144-Glu238-His268. EstYZ5 contains two conserved motifs, a pentapeptide motif GDSAG and a HGGG motif, which are typically found in members of the HSL family. Esterolytic activity of the recombinant enzyme was optimal at 30 °C and pH 8.0, and the kcat/Km value of the enzyme for the optimum substrate p-nitrophenyl butyrate was as high as 1272 mM-1·s-1. Importantly, EstYZ5 showed activity toward di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate with complex side chains, which is rare for HSLs. Molecular docking simulations revealed that the catalytic triad and an oxyanion hole likely play vital roles in enzymatic activity and specificity. The phthalate-degrading activity of EstYZ5, combined with its high levels of esterolytic activity, render this new enzyme a candidate for biotechnological applications.Nitrous acid (HONO) is a major source of the hydroxyl radical (OH) and plays a key role in atmospheric photochemistry. The lack of spatially resolved HONO concentration information results in large knowledge gaps of HONO and its role in atmospheric chemistry and air pollution in China. In this work, an ensemble machine learning model comprising of random forest, gradient boosting, and back propagation neural network was proposed, for the first time, to estimate the long-term (2006-2017) daily HONO concentrations across China in 0.25° resolution. this website Further, the key factors controlling the space-time variablity of HONO concentrations were analyzed based on variable importance values. The ensemble model well characterized the spatiotemporal distribution of daily HONO concentrations with the sampled-based, site-based and by-year cross-validation (CV) R2 (RMSE) of 0.7 (0.36 ppbv), 0.67 (0.36 ppbv), and 0.62 (0.40 ppbv), respectively. HONO hotspots were mainly distributed in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Pearl River Delta (PRD), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and several sites of Sichuan Basin, in line with the distribution patterns of the tropospheric NO2 columns and assimilated surface NO3- levels. The national HONO levels stagnated during 2006-2013, then declined after 2013 benefiting from the implementation of the Action Plan for Air Pollution Prevention and Control. The NO3- concentration, urban area, NO2 column density ranked as important variables for HONO prediction, while agricultral land, forest and grassland played minor roles in affecting HONO concentrations, suggesting the significant role of heterogeneous HONO production from anthropogenic precursor emissions. Leveraging the ground-level HONO observations, this study fills the gap of statistically modelling nationwide HONO in China, which provides essential data for atmospheric chemistry research.Electrokinetic (EK) remediation has been widely studied at laboratory scales. However, field-scale research is far less. In this study, a 14-day EK remediation was carried out, in a field pilot (4 m2) test and a full-scale (200 m2) application for the first time, in a cadmium (Cd) contaminated paddy agricultural field near a mining area. A low voltage of 20 V was applied at both scales; voltage gradient was 20 V m-1 and 4 V m-1 at the pilot and full scales, respectively. Samples were taken from near the anode and cathode, and in the middle of the electric field, in the soil layers 0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 40-50 cm. After the EK remediation, a significant portion of the total Cd was removed in all the layers at the pilot scale, by 87%, 72%, and 54% from the top down, but only in the 0-10 cm layer at the full scale by 74%. As for the plant available (exchangeable and soluble) Cd, significant removal (64%) was only observed in the 0-10 cm layer at the pilot scale. The percentage reduction of the electrical conductivity and removal efficiency of the total Cd was higher near the anode than the cathode. The soil pH was elevated near the cathode but stayed below pH 6 due to the sufficient supply of lactic acid. After the EK remediation, the concentration of the total Cd dropped below the hazard threshold, i.e. 0.4 mg (kg dry wt soil)-1 for agricultural paddy fields in China. A total energy of 2 kW·h and 0.6 kW·h was consumed at the pilot and full scales, respectively. This study showed a successful in situ EK remediation of Cd contaminated paddy agricultural soil, especially in the surface layer, with low voltage and energy demand.
