To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of three brief cognitive screening (BCS) tools, Peruvian version of Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (ACE-Pe), of INECO Frontal Screening (IFS-Pe) and of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-Pe), for the diagnosis of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and its non-dementia stages (VCI-ND) and vascular dementia (VD) in patients with cerebral stroke in Lima-Peru.

Two hundred and four patients were evaluated 61% Non-VCI, 30% VCI-ND and 9% VD. To discriminate patients with VCI from controls, the area under the curve (AUC) of ACE-Pe, IFS-Pe and MMs-Pe were 0.99 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.98-0.99), 0.99 (95%CI 0.98-0.99) and 0.87 (95%CI 0.82-0.92), respectively. Of the three BCS, the IFS-Pe presented a larger AUC to discriminate VCI-ND from VD (AUC=0.98 [95%CI 0.95-1]) compared to ACE-Pe (AUC=0.84 [95%CI 0.74-0.95]) and MMSE-Pe (0.92 [95%CI 0.86-0.99]). The IFS-Pe presented a higher sensitivity (S), specificity (Sp), and positive (+LR) and negative likelihood ratios (-LR) (S=96.72%, Sp=89.47%, +LR=9.1 and -LR=0.03) than ACE-Pe (S=96.72%, Sp=63.16%, +LR=2.62 and -LR=0.05) and MMSE-Pe (S=90.16%, Sp=78.95%, +LR=4.28 and -LR=0.12). In the multiple regression analysis, the IFS-Pe was not affected by age, sex or years of schooling.

Myiasis is a cutaneous infestation by the larvae of dipterous flies. It can be furuncular/nodular, papular, or pustular. Diagnosis of cutaneous myiasis depends mainly on clinical examination especially for the nodular form. The latter two forms can present diagnostic difficulties. Dermoscopy has been reported to be helpful. This report illustrates some of the dermoscopic features of this condition.

The history, clinical findings, and dermoscopic findings of 15 affected individuals were documented.

Dermoscopy in all patients showed the posterior end of larvae (creamy-white bodies and respiratory spiracles resembling birds' legs with digitated feet). Larval motility and bubbles were noticed in 15 and 10 of patients, respectively. Skin surrounding the larvae showed hypopigmentation in 11 patients and an increase in dilated capillaries in 13.

This article is grounded in an adaptation of the 'sexual scripting theory' (Gagnon and Simon, 2005) and proposes the concept of 'ethno-essentialisms of the self' to explore the cultural scripts underpinning the development of metabolic syndrome. Ethno-essentialisms of the self indicate a dialectical relationship between a Japanese healthy self and a non-Japanese unhealthy Other, where ethno-racial susceptibilities might make a Japanese self prone to develop metabolic-related diseases. Despite these susceptibilities, Japanese 'biopedagogy' (Wright, 2009) to control bodyweight is oriented by a proper daily calculation of food consumption in relation to calorie-burning. Biopedagogy in the form of food and nutrition education has largely translated into unyielding efforts to (re)traditionalise eating habits to prevent the supposed Westernisation of Japanese food. Overall, medical knowledge serves to propagate ethno-essentialisms of the self, whose unintended consequence could be 'clinical iatrogenic disease' (Illich, 1976).
People with special health care needs continue to have difficulties accessing regular dental care partly due to oral health professionals feeling they lack the knowledge and experience to provide treatment to these individuals.

Qualitative interviews and focus groups provided an insight into the types and nature of supports that oral health professionals working in the Australian public dental system desired and felt may improve their willingness and/or ability to treat patients with special needs.

Although participants did not identify one group of patients with special needs that were more difficult to treat, they did report a feeling of being unsupported. Clinicians felt that improved training and access to ongoing education in Special Needs Dentistry, opportunities for greater support from specialists or other health professionals, either through networking or other media such as telehealth, and fostering a more supportive clinical environment, particularly in relation to appointment lengths and productivity pressures, may improve their willingness and ability to treat patients with special needs.

The aim of our study was to examine how different causal attributions in patients with laryngeal cancer are associated with smoking behaviours (smoking cessation rates and amount of cigarettes per day) after partial resection of the larynx.

Multicentre prospective cohort study including 4 interviews between diagnosis and partial resection of larynx (t1), one week (t2), 3 months (t3) and 12 months (t4) after surgery.
